    Hi Jason. I recently built my system and had a question about ram. I have 16gb (2x8GB) of XPG Spectrix D45G DDR4 ram and have another kit on the way. Will this second kit add well with the original set or is it better to get ram in a kit like a 4x8GB kit?

    Great contents as always. It sure helps to explain the terminology of all the DRAM and what the gamers need to know. It will be great to have a bit more information for the Laptop gamers because those SODIMM are definitely different from the desktop users. But like you said, DRAM importance are under the GPU, CPU and even possibly motherboard in terms of gaming performance.

    One consideration I didn't hear, or may have missed, is physical size. My CPU cooler does not leave a lot of room for fancy RAM with all the heat spreaders that look like trees with branches sticking out, or a samurai helmet. I don’t know how people manage to fit that stuff. For my current system, I went with 32GB Corsair Vengeance LP 3200 CL16 because I knew it would fit. Also knew it would run without issues because my old system also used a similar Corsair LP product and never had any RAM stability issues.

    Thank you for making this video. It's been a while since I've seen anyone make a good RAM roundup. Great points regarding considerations for a gaming PC. One thing I do want to point out regarding rigs for Professional content creation. If you're building a PC for these reasons, then stability should the 2nd highest consideration behind capacity on what settings you should use for memory. It doesn't help if you gain a few seconds on your rendering times if the PC is crashing regularly. Even if you game on the same PC, the loss of a few fps is worth getting reliable performance when doing paid (or practicing to get paid) work.

    In 2019 when I built my starter APU build, R5 2400G, I bought a 16GB two stick kit of 3000MT RAM. At the time for me it was price to performance and basically what I could afford. One thing that confused me during my PC part gathering, I had 2 identical 2x8gb kits that were 3600 CL16 from the same retailer, when I later found a sale page from them with a similar kit with the same specs, brand and all for less than I got my kits, but it was a separate SKU. I researched and found out they had different timings but still CL16. The kits I had were 16-19-19-39 (Hynix die), and the kit on the sale page was 16-16-16-36 (Samsung die). DDR5 is much faster than DDR4, if you watch most videos you see DDR4 beating out DDR5 except in some cases, this has been due to a few things, most importantly as DDR5 is new most MOBO manufacturers have not done well at taking advantage of the new tech, since even the latest DDR5 tests I have had 5 bios updates on my z690 hero, all of them have been to increase DDR5 performance, I have seen very large increases which I know one KZreadr is working on showing the updates in the following weeks.

    Great video in general, no complaints. Might make special mention of the 3600 cl17 stuff in future which is almost certainly CJR, and although with a ryzen build which doesn't run odd Cas latencies you'd end up at 18-19-19-39 which is still better than the 3600 18-20-20 or 18-22-22 kits. The main reason 3200 14-14-14 is more expensive is the fact that it is bdie and as such attracts the bdie tax and is less common as well and the real value lies in manual tuning for it and like you mentioned the compatibility as even the older ryzen stuff will run it no problem.

    Recently discovered your channel and it has helped me out in cutting costs wherever I can without sacrificing performance, thanks! Quick question: how much am I going to sacrifice in terms of performance by going with the 5600G instead of the X? Not doing so because of its integrated graphics, but as an emergency option in case my AMD GPU's drivers fail (I've heard horror stories in the subreddit) and don't have to wait weeks to use my PC again.

    Great and informative video mr Jason! I just wish I saw this 6 weeks ago, before bying my new rig.. To warn anyone who are out to upgrade to DDR5, DO NOT buy 4 sticks of DDR5 RAM! As you touched in this video, the memory controllers just can't handle it.. I bought a pre-built with a kit of 2x Kingston Fury 16GB 5200 MT/s, but chose an upgrade option to ad 2 more of the same sticks. When trying to activate XMP in the BIOS, the PC doesn't even boot up.. Trying to manually set the memory to run more than 4000 MT/s, just makes the system very unstable, so baseclock is really all I can use without having frequent game crashes. So now I'm trying to get the company who built the PC to swap my 4 sticks for a kit of 2 sticks with the same amount of memory..😕

    I learned a couple new things about RAM so thank you for that. I was hoping you would be covering a little more about DDR5 as I am buying a desktop to get away from using my laptop for highly demanding games and applications. The desktop comes with 12th Gen Intel chips 3070TI and DDR5 4800Mhz. I assumed it would be sufficient and on equal par with DDR4 and make it easily upgradeable when DDR5 gets better and cheaper.

  • @PCBuilderChannel

    @PCBuilderChannel

    If it is a prebuilt, you don't have a lot of choice if they use DDR5. Nothing wrong with it, just that the memory controller on 12th gen intel can't fully take advantage of DDR5 (similar thing happened when DDR4 first rolled out). Hopefully Ryzen 7000 and 13th gen Intel continue to improve! But similar gaming performance. Hope that helps!

    I would actually go for 2x16gb 3600mhz, cl16. Price wise it's like less than double usually compared to 2x8 and you future proof yourself so much more. I agree that most of the time you won't need more than 16gb ram, but when you have discord, steam, windows, and all kinds of other stuff running it starts to take a toll. Especially when you play city builder games which are often overlooked in comparisons. Think of: cities skylines, frostpunk, anno 1800. Then 32 will make a difference over 16gb. Plus it's easier to fork out say 50 bucks for double the ram rather than finding a matching kit 1 year down the line. In my case for instance the RAM i had was discontinued because of a takeover.

    For intel 3200mhz cl16, may seem that it has same first word latency than 3600mhz cl18, but the subtimings are slightly faster and are often same price or less than the 3600mhz cl18. For amd 3600mhz cl18, amd cpus usually prefer 3600mhz or so. 3600mhz cl16 is also on the table, i can find these kits for $20 more than their 3600mhz cl18. You can also consider samsung bdie for amd if you overclock, but they are quite more $ and quite more hard to find. Also there are ADATA, XPG, and TEAMGROUP bundles of RAM and SSD which contain higher end SSDS and saves a buck.

  • @PCBuilderChannel

    @PCBuilderChannel

    Some things prefer lower latency, some faster frequency. On balance 3600 CL18 is roughly equivalent to 3200 CL16 and that's why I recommend to skip it in favor of 3600 CL16 if you want to jump up a tier of performance.

  • @adama7752

    @adama7752

    Internally there is a timing spec of how long it takes in nanoseconds to get data to the output pins (CAS latency). So, if you are running at a faster clock, you'll wait more cycles before that timing is met. At the extremely you could have CL1, but you'd have to run slow like 20MHz. The only reason to run at a faster clock is the subsequent data burst (next bit in the burst) has a much faster timing. Not than you can control how a game reads it's memory. But sequential reads are faster than random

    Here is my recommendation for all ryzen users: Get a 2x8GB kit of 4000MT CL19-19-19 (those 3 being equal is big signal of Samsung B-die) then use Ryzen DRAM Calculator to tone down to 3600MT CL14 or even 3800MT CL16 if you're lucky. Last upgrade I performed for RAM, was swapping out my 2400mhz Aegis ram 32gb 2x 16gb kit xmp profile set to 2700 or 2800 (i forget) for ripjaws 4x8gb = 32gb @3600mhz low latency ram. I ended up getting them used for 134 dollars which at the time was a steal. looks good having all the slots filled, and it has been a solid performer. I haven't clocked it higher in the xmp, I just saw no need for it. I may later at some point when I get a upgrade on the cooler for my 6700k for higher OC. as for the silicon powr kits you showed, i've tried a 3600 mhz kit 32gb 2 x 16gb sticks that were supposed to support XMP. My system did not like that at all. if anyone here is running MSI z170, you might want to rethink that as an upgrade. I am not sure if it was the board or my ram, I tested the sticks in all slots by themselves and the only way they worked for me was with xmp off. i didn't pay to run 3600mhz ram at base speed. I am not crapping on the company btw. I love silicon power. i'll go to them again and again for SSDs without any reservations. I've only had one bad drive and they took care of me with no issues. and maybe they would have done that with the ram, but i went through AMAZON, and it was easier just to get refunded and move on. ended up with the rip jaws and have been happy ever since. I would like to build a new system, but i see no need to do so, so I am just going to drive this heap till it fails.
