Why not make T shaped ruined buildings instead?

A lot of War games are based on Medieval Europe and the architecture tends to be similar. However there's a lot of potential in the structures from all around the world, from the layered ziggurat to the Middle Eastern clay or even Grecian marble there's always a another design to look into.

You know instead of a L-shaped corner, you can just move the other wall along and make a T. Maybe even make it two different buildings next to each other rather than an internal wall for one building, put a door on each side of the top of the T. Also, looking at how real buildings are constructed and collapse can show you some more interesting ways to make buildings. Like, just how much rubble there is on the base of a building or how skyscrapers are often built around solid inner cores that remain standing even if the floors fall away. Saying all that, the details in these ruins are great and I could imagine these forming some kind of town or village sinking into a red Mars-like dessert. The sands consuming the buildings.

As much as I like building generic terrain, it goes to show how just changing something like theme or pallet can make something really unique!

Take the generic and tweak it into unique? That’s how you make a project that is functional and give your self a board everyone wants to play on and leads into fun memorable games. Love it.

This makes me want to see what Persian designs you could do. India, Tibet, more eastern design would be really fun with all the designs. A lot of detail though....

Medieval Spanish architecture with its blend of Christian and Muslim influenced designs is a really cool source too.

I need to convince my wife I should set up an air brush station. Watching a lot of your work is leading me to really want to try air brushing.

If you need THE HACK tm. Airbrush is an easy sell, its small its cool its not a lot of hassle, and then once you get metallic sparkles everywhere like you fought someone covered in glitter its easy to then go "well this is clearly annoying i should fix this before it becomes a problem" and then build the booth... Its how i convinced myself i needed a booth!

Try it man. Air brushing is amazing and great for terrain. Worth the investment if anything put money to the side until you save for it and get it.

I could see those ruins being on Tallarn (WH40k), or be Haqqislam (Infinity) ruins, or could be used with Al-Qadim (AD&D rpg).

Oh, boy; that is some super cool looking ruined terrain.

Really cool design, and the paint job was very effective, I think you definitely accomplished what you set out to do! For me the feature I liked best was that you put holes in the middle at the base of the wall, so many kits and builds look like a bell curve projected on a corner, with no holes or gaps in the middle or on the base, the only damage is around the edge, this way really sells that out was a building more than just a generic line of site blocker. Well done!

This is Fantastic! Thanks Jeremy! I'm gearing up to run a Brancalonia campaign, (Italian D&D)and now I need to build some Italian/Spanish inspired terrain! Perfect inspiration!

There's so many things in this that could have gone wrong but didn't, it looks amazing.

I'm glad that green foam is good, I've been wanting to try foam terrain building and that's all the stores near me have. It seems like every hobby youtuber I watch always uses the pink panther stuff

Love the chunky stucco look, and those windows really add alot of character! Its nice to see some colour, instead of the regular old GREY

I have updated and "enhanced " a lot of my old terrain. It took a bit of time but it is now more in line with my newer crafts. Great video man 👍...by the way...good to see you getting Into one page rules 😁. It is awesome.

I made some generic ruins just a bit ago. The one thing that made them more interesting is that they had a skeleton of Construx toys that a friend gave me. Using those meant I was pulled away from straight walls and right angles. Some stone wallpaper imported from England and some dollar store clipboards that had a tile like texture added easy detail. Then I poured on sprue bricks and kitty litter. I also used the bricks and litter to make rubble hills that could mix in but just be hills rules wise.

I o T - Can't wait! I like how this could be a monastery or just a central village building. Love terrain that isn't generic but could still be used for different stuff.

I was a bit confused about your sourcing problems at first, because it was super easy for me for the past 30 years. Then you explained that Styrodur is a German thing that you don't get that easily and i felt blessed to live there.

Turned out fantastic! Love how the wall damage looks, with the clay colour coming through behind the paint colour

Haha its nice seeing you mention the styrodur bricks that we've been using. For some reason, the foam in construction here isn't used in the thin sheets that you have and instead it's all styrodur (with a textured outward face...). As a result if I want to closely replicate something you did, I have to cut the brick into sheets (and I don't have a hot wire, its all blade baby!) or just change the approach entirely. Then again that's only good for me and my creativity, it's kinda more fun that way! :D This build came out nicely!

I've recently had the idea of making onion/dome topped buildings using Christmas baubles, which could fit into Slavic, Indian or Middle-Eastern inspired buildings. There's a fully rounded half, and also a half with a point on the top (to put the string around the tree branch) to mount a statue or some kind of icon/ornament to. Additionally, they come in different textures. Some are fully smooth, some have fancy ridges and curves on the surface, and some have a diamond pattern. That's about 6 different variations on the domes. With all of those different options, I think baubles would make for excellent domes. I haven't tried it just yet, but I'm excited to do so. Sorry for the wall of text lol

Love all the artistic decision making for this piece. It definitely looked scary and gaudy before that brown coat and skipping washed for this piece was the right call. This is a new favorite

I would suggest sketching out a combat zone with a relatively balanced set of cover structures both man-made and natural. From there, you can figure out what pieces you would need and go from there. Style can be decided when sketching! Once you have a mini map and a landscape sketch, you can make your pieces accordingly

The windows and the side trim really add a lot to the ruins. The color scheme is great.

I *absolutely love* this video! The timing couldn't be better, since I've recently taken an interest in Turkish history, and want to add an army inspired by the Ottoman janissary corps to my setting.

There is something about the dynamic colors you used, the scaling of the texture and details, and the lack of a wash that gives these a uniquely cinematic look. I don't know how else to put it than it ticks all the boxes for my brain to easily be transported to imagining a real battle around those ruins.

What I love most is how you can use it for both SCIFI and fantasy. Allot of times Ruin seem to cator to one side based on the details applied to it. And thos that try to achieve both usually suffer by simplisity. Good work. Love everything as always.

I challenge you to find a solution where you incorporate the remains of a roof to further remove the traditional corner ruin structure. A roof can of course create issues with placing the minis, so that is something to take into account. Challenge accepted? :)

Nicely done! It's always good to have different themes in terrain. Even cities have different architecture, so the same can go for ruins.

The samurai guys (we know who are they inspired by) could be a race in a fantasy setting, similar to the illithid. Space faring, stranded, and all that jazz.

Good tips. There are so many historical architecture styles that can be applied to gaming terrain to make interesting tables.

With the internet and all of the ruined buildings around the world (whether from time, natural disasters, wars, simple neglect) there are so many ways to get inspiration outside of the typical gothic European style. - Shifting lands looks to be a great source for windows and bits, too!

This couldn't have came at a better time! I am currently working on a army that is desert based (Warmachine-Protectorate)and needed some ideas for scatter terrain.

Lovely! That pseudo-morrocan aesthetic really brings the Mobius/Chronicles of Riddick vibe. I can see why the corner piece is so popular, but I can't help feeling we're not asking enough of our terrain. Are there ways to make it useful in-game beyond built-in dice towers and turn trackers? Are there options for creating interesting choices beyond choke-points and elevation? Love the One Page Rules minis, by the way. Seriously considering kit-bashing some Duchies of Vinci guys into a Stargrave crew.

Reminds me a little of the many beautiful forts in Rajasthan. I'd love to do a build inspired by Jantar Mantar, which is sort of a park full of enormous astronomical instruments that would make great scatter terrain. Love to see less eurocentrism in gaming!

In Brazil we dont find xps foam. This material isnt used here, even for houses building. We can order by internet but its very expensive

I bought a load of the corner ruins in MDF that were on sale. I also bought same packs of 1 foot square cheap wood floor tiles. Leaving a inch all round for a sidewalk I glued the wall section to the to them make whole ruined building. much more intresting that just a corner.

love the aesthetic of this build! my entire campaign and homebrew setting was motivated by the same disinterest in the same grey-brown-green medieval european settings that are ubiquitous in D&D. i ended up drawing inspiration from turkish, persian/iranian, arabian, and indian subcontinental cultures, fashion, and architecture for different races and locations. the best part has been learning about real-world places and people and histories.

If someone wants references for cool non-european gothic architecture I should recomend arab and mozarab architecture and gardens of Spain and some things in 20th spanish architecture. If you want someinstant reference for some of these magnificents pieces of art: In Star Wars Ep.2 Naboo is the "Plaza España of Sevilla". El Escorial is also a good reference. And for some arabesque and gothic references: -El Micalet. -La Torre del Homenaje (Jérica) -La Alhambra of Granada. Edit: special mention to the mosque cathedral of Córdoba.

That aesthetic is amazing and has multiple uses for both fantasy and sci-fi games (and is absolutely on point for the Infinity Haqqislam faction as well). The ground floor openings really take it away from the generic terrain (probably a holdover from the old 'ground floor not playable' GW rules) and give it a 'high-end' feel. Clearly I've watched enough that my first thought on the windows (after recognizing that the thickness you were working with was 1/2") was "without having to get something from shifting lands cuz shipping, I wonder if I could play around with Granny grating and get a similar effect".

Great video as always and I´m totally with you with the generic corner skeleton terrainpieces^^, they work, but they more look like unfinished constructionsites than ruins. And yeah we have great xps foam over here and its really good to get over here in Germany, not the cheapest material but great for building terrain and you made a good choice with the proxxon hotwirecutter and they also made a bigger one^^

I just realized that if you use the BMC mod podge primer and THEN use a texture roller on top of that it is significantly more crisp and higher quality than if you texture roll it first and then use the BMC mod podge primer.
