Thanks! This was a very well stated argument and you've put another weapon in my arsenal. When I saw your first example, my immediate thought was just a range-based c-bet 100% of the time, given that I was the preflop aggressor and that flop hit my range hard. But I see your point and I will be considering it in the future. What do think about a middling pocket pair, which I also would have raised on the button? e.g. 88 and a flop of K72? I think your logic doesn't apply here, because the 88 is so vulnerable to BB's calling range. I'm going to be unhappy when a 9 through Q comes on the turn and he bets. Am I looking at this right right way? Also, if I'm introducing a check-behind range on a flop like this, don't I need to balance it? I suppose if I add AA and KK, plus a few complete misses, such as middle suited connectors with which I raised preflop to give deck coverage to my PFR range, that will fully balance this check-behind range. I kind of hate to give up my only chance to win the pot with those hands where their only equity is fold equity, but maybe some with enough back door outs would be ok to check here. They might pick up enough on the turn to really justify the delayed c-bet, and an aware opponent now won't just assume all checks behind were AA. Anyway, just on the strength of this one video, I'm subscribing. I'm looking forward to more such interesting ideas.

Excellent vid Nathan, my biggest leak at the moment is not being selective enough when considering cbets, I often find myself making dumb cbets with middling hands and/or wrong opponents as I get deeper into sessions because I get into this mode of thinking cbetting is just what you're "supposed to do" in this game. Appreciate u showing us how to pick our spots better when making the cbet as opposed to picking a "check back and call/delayed-cbet" line. If u can, make a video on approaching cbetting OOP in potentially 3bet pots, that's another area I struggle with when the flop bricks out on ya. Appreciate the intermediate level content like this, keep em coming. You've helped me immensely as a novice over the years with this channel and "Crushing the Microstakes". u da man!

I used to play live 6 nights a week until 2012 when I took a break from the game for personal reasons (no I didn't go bust lol)! I have returned recently playing online because I am now housebound disabled and have noticed the blind adherence to C bets! It's like everyone does it all of the time. I also watch a lot of high buy in live stream tournament play of the UK's top poker tour where they employ a summarizer as well as a commentator and he passed an interesting off the cuff comment. He said "The C bet is so 2014 these days" He didn't mean we shouldn't do it what he did mean was we should be selective in how and when we do it. This is a common mistake I see a great deal online in tournament play where the cards go down to showdown and one of the players really should not have even be in the pot after the flop. Why are they? They have invested more chips on a C bet then chased the pot through the streets!

Nathan. Been watching your vids the last couple weeks. I play at a local bar that does tournament style 6 days a week, usually 1 to 3 tables depending on the day. Hadn't played much this Fall since I bowl and have kids and such. But I'd been checking out a couple poker tutor YT channels. I think yours is best I've seen thus far. I realized these players where I play love to limp and love to chase. The tour hosted a couple tournaments recently. Black Friday tourney I chopped the pot three ways out of about 45 players. Today I finished 7th out of almost 80. I think these are excellent immediate results. I credit you, for sure. Thanks.

I know this wasn't the focus of the video, but it would be useful to know if this strategy should only be used after isolating a player. How does it fare in multi-way pots (e.g. lets say 3-4 players including yourself). If all players check to you, should a flop C-bet be the standard play in this scenario so that you can deny some equity on future streets?

The only issue I would have with checking there is having 2 clubs on board and straight draws. Do you really want to give a free card? Seems like if you check and another club or paint hits you are left guessing if they are playing at you because you checked or because they hit their draw. Where if you bet and they call, most times in small stakes they will check on the turn because you are the aggressor so you can now check to keep the pot smaller and make the river decision a bit easier. I am definitely going to give this a try though and see how it goes for me.

I disagree with checking the flop w second pair on such a coordinated board. If u get called on the flop 95% of the time you can see a free river if u want because your opponent is almost never donk betting turn. This way u can get folds from worse hands like qj or 9x that can suck out on u on turn/ river

I tend to agree with you. In this specific example I would be treating my open raise as a bluff with a hand like K 10 off. So it stands to reason that a cbet is necessary way more often, because we are the last person that wants to see another card and complicate the remaining play. I also understand this is a general example, not meant to be nit-picked specifically, so his logic is ok, but I don't think I'd ever be checking behind on that board with such a weak hand.
