    Great vid. As a KOI POND owner, I have a couple of tips. When you order a replacement tube (bulb), always buy two so you'll always have one on hand. Sometimes there can be manufacturing or shipping problems that make new tubes unavailable. I always plumb the UV last in the filter flow. Water goes through all of the filters first and then the UV. I have never had to clean a crystal tube.

    So very confused, just ordered my 40w pentair from brs, and sizing pumps . In this video section like 13:50 to 15:00 we discus not running a loop in sump, and run off the return..wouldn't it need a pump still to push the water up through it and back out..? Wouldn't that be hard to regulate, slow for parasites, faster for algae . I am wondering can I plumb a pump in sump run water into it vertically on outside of my red sea 500 and have other end dump the sterilized water back into display ? So exit of water from uv literally just dumps into display Should that pump be in my overflow chamber or return section, does that matter? Thanks!

  • @FreethinkerDave

    @FreethinkerDave

    2 жыл бұрын

    I'm new and trying to figure this out too! It seems to me, if you pump the water from an upstream chamber of the sump (just after the filter socks), into the UV, then return it to a downstream chamber (the return chamber) of the sump, it would work fine and fully circulate through the whole system. Use a variable speed DC pump, and measure the flow from the hose that returns to the lower sump chamber by timing how long it takes to fill a 1 gal bucket and do the math. Then adjust the pump speed as necessary.

    I don't think it is correct to say that the UV sterilizer does not kill things, it just stops them from reproducing. I think you are confusing the different meanings of the word sterilize. In this case I believe we are using the medical term not the animal husbandry term. UV radiation is a form of high energy radiation that, among other things, destroys nucleic acids. This results in; the inactivation of viruses, the death of bacteria and other protozoa, and significant genetic damage and disruption to complex life, potentially enough to kill them.

    yes UV sterilization is used in surgery, to sterilize tools. But the output is high enough and it is permanently under UV for about 1 hour. It is not passing trough a tube for one sec or less lol

    Almost all UV sterilizers in our hobby are used in a housing, so looking at it would be difficult. That said, you're absolutely correct. DO NOT look directly at your UV light.

    Saltwater hobby is expensive even more so if you buy cheap in the beginning and replace everything later. $20-$50 does not buy anything, that’s good. Even a tank of car gas we burn costs more than $50. Good beef is not cheap and cheap beef is not good. Study sites with experts, like BRS videos. Forums sometimes just spread myths and gossip or bad experiences.

    Too many explanations in the negative. When you say negative explanations like “don’t” it’s wrong always tell people what to do and say what not to do you kids you’re not very well educated in communication
