Someone on the Melbourne trains subreddit figured out what the problem most likely is. When the stage 3 Comeng got the software update that added East Pakenham, the station names and codes became misaligned by 1 so when the onboard computer uses the station code to look up what text to display, it displays the next station alphabeticaly. The reason the announcement is correct is because the train uses its GPS location to trigger announcements, so it knows the station it’s pulling into.

@@ViscusKZread I would agree for the most part. However each train type require’s slightly different software so I think what’s most likely is someone was copying and pasting the changes and wasn’t fully paying attention.

The Comengs actually do, or used to have an audio recording for Stony Point so such an announcement is definitely possible.

Yesterday I caught a HCMT from Southern Cross at around 4.12pm that displayed it's destination as Cranbourne on the front head board & also along the exterior carriages, then upon entering the carriage it displayed East Pakenham as it's final destination so I got off at Sandown Park & caught the next train coming which did go to Cranny.

The information board on Southern Cross platform was saying East Pakenham as the next train to arrive, also the announcement over the loud speaker relayed the next train as East Pakenham. I watched the HCMT coming out from the loop as I was standing at the very northern end of the platform. I saw the head board as the train arrived & watched every carriage pass by & they all said Cranbourne. Inside the train the side information boards had East Pakenham as final destination. Just glad I saw the mistake & didn't pass Dandy Stn on a Pakenham bound train. Would've sucked doubling back to Dandy Stn to get a Cranny train.

Back in the day it used to be called Stoner's Point. It was a perfect spot to rip a fat cone

With Trains going to East Pakenham the HCMT trains label it as E Pakenham still but I am pretty sure Flinders Street has the same amount as East Pakenham

Someone on Reddit posted the likely cause. An index mismatch between the station code and string lookup for the station names.

Yeah well stony point line comeng is hauled by a SSR T/P class on push pull. 😂

last time a comeng ran revenue service on the hillside lines was 2019, when an x'trap train failed, and no other x'trap trains were available so a mixed comeng set covered an up Lilydale service
