you right its not a ceremony, but he's either asking for strength by whistling that drum or he's honoring the deceased, and asking strength for himself, this is an honor song when it becomes whistled, i was always taught to always cease all recordings to respect the purpose of why he's whistling

I was Sundancing at Ironwood Hilltop Sundance on the Sicangu Lakota Reservation in Rosebud South Dakota 1987, I was 12 years old. I dropped an eagle feather and I didnt know what to do, so I told the medicine man Elmer Running "I dopped an eagle feather, do we need to stop and sing a feather pick up song?" he laughed and said "this isnt a pow wow" then he picked up my feather and handed it to me. Then I asked "well what about the pow wow whistle, is that sacred ?" he laughed again and said "nothing at a pow wow is sacred only the eagle feathers and the drum, and the only whistle sacred to us is the eagle bone whistle and it should NEVER be used at a pow wow". After that I started to ask more and more about the pow wow, who started it, which tribes, the origins of the dances. I decided to go to ceremonies and learn about our ways and all the old songs. I started singing for Lakota medicine men when they would come to town and run ceremonies. Meanwhile I was still going to pow wows and over time I started seeing "pow wow people" trying to turn the pow wow into a ceremony, when in fact its a social dance and NOT A CEREMONY. When the pow wow whistle first started in the 1980's it was just about a dancer liking the song and asking for 4 more push-ups. It wasnt "sacred" or "healing" or some ancient old cremony that cant be recorded lol we didnt have big huge camcorders back then, we couldnt afford em. But yeah in the 1990's some dancer at some pow wow, who knows where, blew his whistle and got on the mic after the song was over. He was like "I blew my whistle because blah blah blah" trying to sound "sacred" when in fact most "pow wow people" dont go to ceremonies, and yeah then it just kinda grew from there. Most pow wow people copy eachother, one guy grabs the mic and says he blew his whistle because this and that, and the next guy blows his whistle and gets on the mic and tries to out do the other guy by saying something "more sacred" lol. Sadly most natives dont even go to ceremonies, if you did, you would know the difference between a social dance and a ceremony. Social dance is where go to have fun, dance, sing, laugh, eat at the vendors, snag, record good music, take pictures, compete for money and its open to anyone and everyone. Ceremony is where you go to pray, you go there for healing, you dont go there to "snag", you dont go there to take pictures, or record music, theres no vendors, theres no money involved, no competing, you dont go to ceremony to have a good time, and its done in private. Most pow wows are sponsered by big oil companies or even beer companies, big casinos. Ceremonies are not sponsered by any companies, theyre usually put on by a family and maybe only the family members will be there and the medicine man and his helpers. Nowadays the pow wow is getting crazier and crazier lol people making up dances and saying theyre "healing" dances lol Ive been pow wowing since the 1970s, never in my life have I met a person who was sick and went to a pow wow for "healing" and actually got healed. Well there is the Maggie White story, but thats the only one I heard. Anyhoo, just thought Id drop some knowledge for whoever reads this. Hopefully you learn something, you cant learn anything if you know EVERYTHING already.

There is actually a reason where the whistle came into play uring powwow and as a sicangu i will tell you its a way for war societies to express themselves. And as lakota any form of expression is sacred, social or not. As a sundancer you should understand everything and everyone is sacred. Just because no one can give a straight answer or a definite one does not mean powwow is bs, ive seen the behavior your talking about in sundance and in medicine men. We are ikce wikcasa, common man, no one is better than another. Ceremony or not we do what we need to do not for our ego but for the people. And only then can we stop being ignorant and discriminatory to our fellow man. That attitude tou have is the reason many others dont like ceremony, its not inviting. Your suppose to celebrate life as a victory, not scold others fo r knowing less than you. Do better

@@bradwood5288ecause it is kind of disrespectful to record it because the whistler is either asking for strength because maybe they are poor or a relative died or to honor the dead, at a pow wow this women whistled us because her daughters kid killed herself so that’s why
