    Exactly. Meatballs and the beetroot salad are stuff from the Christmas table but those are factory made versions so obviously it's not like homemade or a proper restaurant. On Christmas eve you'll have your grandma's recipe that varies between regions and families. Some put haring in the salad, in my family it would be like beets, apples, mayonnaise and sour creme I think. Don't remember exactly. But what you had is more like fast food version. The origin of the Christmas sandwich is probably eating leftovers from Christmas. On Christmas eve you'll have a smörgåsbord with different dishes, with a big ham as the main (like your turkey). The following days you'll be eating ham sandwiches etc.

    Actually, the white stones on the red building at Stortorget represent the 92 people executed in the Stockholm bloodbath. Christian The Tyrant (king at the time) invited people from all the Swedish noble families to this big coronation party and after a couple of days of festivities, Christian ordered all exits to Stockholm closed and all the noble families were incarcerated, tried and executed right there on Stortorget. Over 70 people were beheaded, the rest hanged, and the square was basically red from all the blood. A very dark part of our history :/

    Cloudberries (hjortron) are an arctic fruit that grows in tundra bogs! It needs long sunlight hours in summer to actually become fruit. The long sunlight hours are also the reason why the strawberries that grow here in scandinavia are much sweeter and have more flavor.

    Fun fact about Julmust: it is annoying the heck out of Coca Cola-company, as during christmas and easter the sales of Coca Cola in Sweden drop to almost nothing because everyone drinks Julmust instead. They tried to make a Coca Cola Julmust but I dont think it ever caught on.

  • @Frendh

    @Frendh

    Pripps originally bottled and sold coca-cola for the company Coca-Cola. But Pripps refused to stop selling Julmust so Coca Cola "fired" them. Coca Cola started bottling real julmust. Real meaning, they used the same julmust essence for taste that everyone else use. You buy it from AB Roberts. I can't remember what the Coca Cola julmust was named, but they made it really swedish sounding and had the Coca Cola brand printed with _tiny_ text.

    The "pink stuff" is beet root sallad. Very common during christmas and all year around on a meatball sandwich! Lovely stuff. Regarding the cloud berry - its the best berry on this planet! So lovely!!! Warm cloudberry jam on vanilla ice cream.... mmmmmmmmmmm. But picking the cloudberries is not easy. They grow up north in the bogs. Its a chore to walk the bogs, find the berries and pick the ripe ones. You have tons of mosquitos attacking you, the wet, sucking bog, the buckets with cloudberries... Its hard work! Ive done it so many times and its worth all the hard work! Best berries in the world (second best is lingonberries which is so much easier to pick!)

    The reason for the Wasa to sink is the King wanted more guns, so they added an extra gun deck while the ship was being built. We learned from the experience, to this day we have an institution FMV who is responsible for making sure military system works as a system, and not only as it's parts.

    The Vasa museum is amazing and I would recommend anyone visiting Stockholm to go there. You can download audio guides for you phone or tablet in several languages from their home page and they are quite informative. :) In Sweden you normally eat pizza with a knife and fork, it doesn't, as you discovered, come pre-sliced for eating with your hands as the crust is typically, as you discovered, very thin. :) Cloudberry jam is also sometimes eaten warm with warm or fried/deep fried Bree cheese, but it also goes really well warm with some good vanilla ice cream. And Swedish waffles, unlike Swedish pizza, is often cut up (the waffle usually has sort of heart shaped segments) and eaten by hand. ;) The gargoyle is part of the main well of Gamla Stan so that's where everyone in the area got their fresh water from. The meatball sandwich (yes cold meatballs) near the end is not just for Christmas, it's too delicious to only be eaten for a few days of the year, ;) and the purple/pink stuff is beetroot sallad made of pickled beetroot, mayo, sour cream, salt, pepper and often some mustard and sometimes with a bit of apple. It goes really well with the cold meatballs. :)

    I didn't expect to hear the word Halloumi. The name is familiar to me given there's an abundance of mediterranean foods where I live so I can get both the Cypriot version and the Egyptian relative with a similar name. Brined cheeses are many and varied, Feta being a greek style, Halloumi being a Cypriot style similar to a number of Arabic cheeses. Nabulsi is one that I enjoy, it's from Palestine and Jordan, it's got nigella seeds in it, (or at least the kind around here does) so it has a vaguely oniony flavour. Cheese is one of life's pleasures worth exploring. 😋

    I've heard of Cloudberries (I watch a show about Alaska and one of the people on it has talked about it) but have never tried one. It's a berry that only grows in like the most Northern latitudes I believe. Like if you roughly trace the Canadian/ American border going around the planet, it mainly only grows north of that. It's supposed to be Really high in Vitamin C, so people who live in arctic locations will pick them and then preserve them in various ways and eat that in the dark, sunless winters to get Vit C :) And also, YAS Kyde, I *Also* Loved the Gargoyles cartoon show, and from that have always just Loved gargoyles. I just think they're so interesting =D

    The french hot dog is named after the type of bread but also because of the dressing that it usually comes with. Called French Hot Dog Dressing, very inventive haha... You often get the option of having ketchup and mustard instead but that sort of makes it just a bread heavy hot dog.

    Rather late to see this great video - but having examined all the comments, no one has (so far) mentioned the telephone box. In the UK they can be used as lavatories, so the open exposed area to the south seems a way to stop this. Very sensible design. Fortunately the (dank) red telephone boxes are all being removed now.

    If you ever come back to Stockholm, you should visit a place by the name of "Sjätte Tunnan". The top part looks like any other bar, but if you go down in to the basement... you will enter the medieval times of Stockholm, with drinks and food from the that time. Here is the website for it. www.sjattetunnan.se/

    That ship museum was pretty cool! Were those colored cherubs a model of the ones carved on the ship? And were they colored that way back when the ship was first made? I think the only thing french about that french hot dog is that is was served in a hollowed out baguette! I think that waffle was a liege waffle (a real yeast-risen Belgian style waffle), which is made with large sugar pearls (round balls of sugar) mixed in the batter. When the sugar pearls hit the hot waffle iron they melt and caramelize, making the waffle extra crisp on the outside. Cloud berry is an actual berry that is goldeny-orange in color. I think that phone box used to be a public payphone booth, but the phone was removed since cell phones came around. Another type of brined cheese you may have already had is feta. That "wider second floor" thing was very common in the old construction all over Europe and the UK to keep streets wide enough for merchant wagon carts, but still get extra square footage in their new construction. When I saw the color of the sauce on the sandwich, I immediately thought of pickled beets! Will we be seeing any of your visit with Tommy and Emma in the future? The new camera looks crisp and the sound is great! Thanks guys!

    34:10 Malls? :) There are no "malls" in the rest of the city proper either. (Not counting Solna, suburbs, etc.) The main difference with the newer parts compared to Gamla stan is that the streets are straighter and wider and that most surviving buildings are from the 1700s-1900s instead of 1300s-1700s.

    @@kydeanderic I know, I live here. Gallerian is awful. Basicly a mistake from the weird socialistic city planning in the 1960s. An unholy alliance between totalitarian social engineering and some influences from the USA (mainly their car-based society, function separation, urban spread, etc.). But still, Gallerian is not really a "mall" in the american sense, not a large one story building in an enormous parking lot in the middle of nowhere. :)

    @@kydeanderic Sure, that's ok, and a matter of words. But my main point was that [the attractive parts of] cities like Stockholm isn't dominated by large "malls" in aluminium boxes, but by smaller shops and boutiques. Preferably situated in carefully crafted romantic buildings made out of natural materials. ;-) I enjoy your videos, btw.
