The stock tank hot tub I built two years ago is still getting regular use most months out of the year. We've enhanced it to be more durable and to work as a small pool in the summer months by adding filtration. I haven't seen anyone else use these cheap and good quality parts on a stock-tank so wanted to share.
This revised design has several advantages:
- The smoke is pretty far away from the bathers.
- It durable and has stood up through 3 seasons so far.
- One person can move everything. The tank rolls easily once parts are removed. The only tool required is a large wrench to disconnect the coil.
- Filtration has worked well to keep the water clean. Many DIY examples on KZread have filthy water.
- A 6 foot round tub is huge for a small family and fun to use as a kiddie pool.
- Heats fast (3-4 hours). You can cook on the fire while waiting. On a cool spring day, you can comfortably swim after an hour or so once the water hits the mid 80's.
- If you bought all of these parts new, you could build this for about $600. If you shop around you could build this for much less.
- I have an unlimited supply of wood on my lot. I only need to buy chlorine tabs and $5 filters every now and then. Monthly cost for electricity and supplies is under $10 for sure.
- It can be made with basic hand tools: a drill, saw, adjustable wrench, and a blow touch.
Certainly insulation or a more effective stove could improve this design, but that would add cost and sacrifice portability.
Here is my previous video when I first made the pool: • Off-grid DIY wood-fire...

Has anyone tried this in New England. I mean filling in the morning and heating from firepit. NOT starting with a frozen tank

would the drop chlorine rust the copper and steel surfaces that the gal finish got scraped?

I haven’t detected any rust problems yet. When or if I do, I will simply coat the tank with protective paint.

How long does the hot tub stay at high temperatures? Is it back to normal water temperature in the morning?

It really depends on outside temp. On a summer night the water is still warm, but not hot the next day.

Is the setup still working? Im thinking about doing your way but they keep saying I cant use a pool pump for a hot tank 😟

The fire pit rusted through, but the rest is ok. I don’t run the pump once it heats up.

Have you tried using an aquarium pump to move the water through the coil quicker to see if it heats the tub quicker? Aquarium pumps can be bought for $11 on up and move the water at 95 to 800 GPH while staying under $22…. Would love to see you spend your money doing the research before I decide to pull the trigger on this project or not. (wink)

I'm not an expert (or even a novice in thermodynamics), but I think with a pump you would get a faster flow, but the water out of the outlet hole would be colder. Sometimes, I connect my hose to the coil so I can start heating as a fill the tub. The water coming out is only a touch warmer, not boiling hot. I don't think a pump would add value to this particular system.

I will say though, if you use a pump, you can be more creative with your heating element design. On the other hand, if your pump fails for any reason, your setup may be damaged by the heat. Your solder will melt for sure. If the trapped heated water cannot properly expand, the results may be dangerous.

I know this has been 3 years ago but at the beginning of your video your daughter was putting her hand and pressure on that glass table, I am not trying to be a Karen but please let her know how dangerous that is and that goes for anyone watching this. Ask me how I know. Because when I was older we made a water slide with just standard plastic and my sister was spitting in the water so I ran to tell mom and when she didn't answer from me pounding on our glass window of the house I started to knock harder and harder to where I finally put my hand through the window pushing a jagged piece of very sharp glass nearly into my radial artery. My dad put came rushing out and put his belt around my arm as a tourniquet and rushed me to the emergency room. Many stitches later and just a scar, thank you Jesus I was ok.

Glad you lived to tell about it! Thank the lord they make tables out of tempered glass.

@@bogamanz I agree, with one caveat "they make some tables out of tempered glass" but kids don't know the difference for the most part so just letting others know about it and my coffee table is not tempered glass. And thanks for the videos on the hot tub, going to try that in the future. Take care.
