However, it's impossible to know whether the market is entering a bear or bull market until after the fact. That's why, historically, investors have been better served by simply being invested rather than waiting for a "better" time to invest.

I agree with you! The market's best days have occurred during a bear market or during the first two months of a bull market when it was difficult to tell whether a bull market had even begun. This means sitting out could mean significantly missing out.

For long-term investors like myself who have the time horizon to weather ups and downs, the length of time I am in the market for potential of an overall return matters far more than what the market is doing when I’m invested.

Very well articulated Gary; I wish I had more time for trial and error, but l'Il be 56 in October and I need ideas and advice on what investments to make to set myself up for retirement, especially with inflation over; my goal is to have a portfolio of at least $2m at the age of 60.

For charts with 1 month and longer timeframes, is it more appropriate to use a simple numerical or semilog scale for estimating measured moves?
