My friend just gave me an idea. Is the tapioca flour meant to thicken the sauce? If that's the case, can cornstarch be the substitute?

  • @HomeCookingwithSomjit

Hi L.S. Yew, thank you for sharing 😃 Yes, you are right. Tapioca flour is used to thicken the sauce. Cornstarch can be used as a substitute instead. It is a stronger thickener, so if substituting, I would suggest using 2 tsp of cornstarch. Hope it helps 😃

I have used Chinese sausage as substitute of dried shrimps. I don't have tapioca flour as it's an ingredient I seldom use - not sure what else I can use it for. So no point buying it unless Somjit has more recipes that use it...haha. I have no idea what is the substitute for tapioca flour....so, I added nothing as substitute.

Hi L.S. Yew, thank you for sharing 😃 Yes, Chinese sausage will do very well as a substitute for dried shrimps. As for the tapioca flour, I use it as a thickener for the gravy in many of my recipes as I'm allergic to cornstarch. In the case that tapioca flour is not available, cornstarch can be used too 😃 Otherwise, it can be omitted. Hope it helps 😃

@beetlejuice964. Cooking vegetable with high heat and fast resulting in a very crunchy and delicious vegetable dish. It's also to avoid the vegetable to release a lot of water which causing it to become soggy. Alternatively, some of the gravy can be removed if there is a lot so that it doesn't look like vegetable soup. Happy cooking and enjoy the dish. 😀
