Sting achieves a sublime balance in this video. He is simultaneously a bookish nerd and a vulgar drunk. Sting plays both parts well. He makes the nerd character the sexier of the two. As a 17-year-old nerd at the time, I was so happy to see a "sexy nerd" on TV. There are many now. But in 1987...it was a new concept.

Nerds have been there before 1987. I bet the classical age had quite a few of them. Lookup the movie "The Freshman" with Harold Lloyd from 1925 for a more "recent" example.

A Friends episode where Phoebe dates two guys simultaneously- a typical macho fireman and a sensitive teacher (who wears glasses). She decides to break up with the latter, but she's at his front door and stopped in her tracks, as he's shirtless, with a well muscled upper physique. Incredible classic song from Sting. Bless the 80s music. Times have changed and the new stuff is pretty awful. Guess that comes with getting older. Sadly, Vesta Williams, that did the amazing background vocals on this song, passed away in 2011 from an enlarged heart at a young age. What a great talent she was. Sting....you are an inspiration always! Keep your tunes coming!

He was taking a Page from The Beatles. Remember when they did "All You Need Is Love", and John sang "Yesterday" and then Paul sings "She Loves You Yeah Yeah Yeah", then he sings a snippet of Every Breath You Take in The Love Is The Second Wave Video.

This is my all time favorite Sting video clip.. not to mention how good he looks here, my god!

My favorite part starts at 3:25 When the beat drops and the dancers come in. I think I was 9 when this song came out and that has always been my shit. All I needed was a chair! RIP Vesta.

I don't think they were married at the time of this video. He married her years later in a sort of royal old fashioned wedding. He also has a song called the secret marriage, which I think summed up his disdain for marriage.

This song was pure fun. This is the only Sting single I ever bought. I wish he made more fun ditties like this. His music became more melancholy island folk fusion. The fact that he can actually dance, blows my mind.

Mark, not all us think she is all that because she is typical. IMHO the best remembering most is STING period. and his lovely natural lookin' wife ...his soulmate. forever. love them! GREAT SONG period and video. - The very pretty blk or mixed blk or hispanic, with long hair style and short curly hair do, then the typical same blonde look chick, nothing special but STING BLONDE SELF IS GORGEOUSSSSSSS GREATEST DANCERS ever in a video period. without high heels on or tight sleazy stuff who can actually move.

i remember her from the video and there were certain parts where she slayed the choreography. but i honestly think i noticed her more because she was usually in the center and that haircut and her poses played really well on camera. Also, i just watched again. she is also very noticeable because of the lighting. since she is white and blonde, it's literally easier for her to be seen because the set and lighting is so dark, filmed in black and white, and the dancers are wearing black, most of the other dancers kind of fade into the background, into the shadows. but it is great choreography and they all were wonderful.

Dancer at 1:06 was highly coveted. He was in 2 of Janet Jackson's videos (Esacapade & What Have You Done for Me Lately?) He was also in Pebbles' video, "Mercedes Boy."

I left my tiny hometown, moved to the big city, and in a little shop not far from my apartment, I noticed they were selling bistro chairs identical to the ones in this video. As I stopped to look at the chairs a realization coalesced in my mind, and I said to myself, "I am irretrievably in love with Sting". Not the man, of course, but his music. 30+ years later, I'm still as much in love as ever.

I used to LOVE Sting and especially this song back in middle school !! They took it to church starting at 3:30 mark....The late great Miss Vesta Williams singing the background vocals...Memories.

Btw there will only be one feyd rautha in my books and it's this guy! Sting is an incredible actor, he's extremely sexy and a wonder singer. Plus a sense of humor to boot! This video is proof

Unfortunately Sting is the same age as me , so in Sixth Form I listened to T Rex, and at University danced to Rod Stewart as ‘ Maggie May ‘ was THE song of my first weeks at University ! Always loved Rod Stewart and in my first year had a HUGE poster of him in a pink satin suit on my Hall of Residence wall !

One of my favourite songs since I was a child. And one of my favourite music videos of all time. It's got 80's soul, it's got power, it's musically great, and it's got Sting playing drunk, which is hilarious.

This has to be the best music video in the world....

But he does it a lot, yes, on stage even more.

I was 14 when this was released, and I happened to have to get my first pair of glasses. My sister (both of us being Police & Sting fans) convinced me to get glasses that looked like the ones Sting wears in the video. Btw, it now strikes me how Prince inspired this song sounds.

One of the best conceptual dance videos ever made, trough his reflection on the mirror, Sting use the theory of the Dolppenganger to tell the story trough a surreal choreography, it shows what a dance video could be far away of the genre or the sound. Brilliant.

There is such a charming moment at 4:16...

Sting brought the funk on this one.

Is it just me, or was Sting low-key sneak-dissing Janet Jackson, with the female dancers doing the chair choreography, similar to the Pleasure Principle video? When I first saw this, I thought the dancers were dissing Janet on the slick. Especially at the end, when they pushed the chairs down and walked away, as if to say, "Hell, we didn't want to be in this MF'in video in the first place!"

A great song and a great video. One of my favorite Sting songs. The song is a work of art, and the video is as well. Well done, and apparently very well received.

I was about to say that. Like there are some parts when she is doing the Jazz dances, she's good BUT when it came to the "street" dances, some of the other dancers had her beat on that.

I remember once hearing that when Rob Lowe saw this video, he asked his agent to get her number so he could ask her out. Must be nice to be a celebrity.
