Ironically amusing how so many seem to think he was being serious. He was having a good laugh along with the audience. It's English humour for fuck's sake.

Exactly. Sting even gave the guy a second line and was looking directly at him when he did so. He even smiled as he made his comment. If Sting was annoyed, pissed or as smug as some seem to think, he wouldn't he wouldn't have smiled, he would have been dead serious. If the audience guy wanted to piss Sting off he would have continued. So yeah, it was clearly done on fun. But this is the modern internet so everything has to be about hate, bitching and celeb egos, right?

I think Sting's reaction is one of genuine amusement. He repeatedly looked toward the guy, as if expecting more. After the second interjection, the guy knew he'd had his moment and to let the show go on. One human, caught up in the moment, and another one recognizing it.

Oh absolutely, he is having fun with the guy. Watch his reactions to Ross Viner in his video of him singing with Sting. Exactly the same amused look on Sting’s face when Viner was unexpectedly good and hamming it up a bit. He is enough of a showman to know when something unexpected like that spices up a live performance. And the guy singing it knew when to stop, which shows he wasn’t completely plastered. I saw Sting in concert on this tour, and the guy absolutely knew how to give the crowd their money’s worth.

They're definitely there for the 35 year old song. Mostly for the singing though. Nobody's paying money because they think he's going to do a great job on an acoustic guitar.

YEP! As a long-time fan, I can tell that Sting is amused and tries to see if the guy is up to the challenge. Sting is a great singer, and a nice human being in private and on stage. BUT he loves to WIN a battle and wants to have the last word - or note, as he says to the guy "Try this!" and sings his famous 10+ seconds long note on "SENDING OUUUUUUUUUUUT" @ 3'37 ;-) Hillarious moment!

A rare moment indeed when one of the crowd added more life to the performer, his performance and all those paying attention just by having a bit of tasteful timing and guts to put himself under the spot light. Obviously Sting had a brief moment finding him self as now part of the crowd during his own concert as his expressions towards the audience attest. Even he seemed impressed by the fan in the response "You got some fucking nerve in you." Thanks for sharing the video.

Sting had to acknoledge the heckler. It's about the best compliment a heckler could get without stopping the performance. "You got some fucking nerve, haven't ya?" Sting is partly pissed because of the disrespect, but he is also cracking a smile. The somber aura Sting was going for with "message in a bottle" done in minimalist fashion for the entire audience was transformed into comedic absurdity by one guy, How could he not crack a smile at that?

  • @lisamurphy4282

As a long-time fan, I see Sting is first surprised, slightly annoyed by the interruption, but mostly amused and his CURSING is pure banter. NEWCASTLE is his hometown, so he expect people banter with him! He is a nice man BUT he does loves to WIN a battle (who doesn't?) most of all on stage. AND he knows he'll have the last word as he says "Try this!" and sings his famous 10+ seconds long note on "SENDING OUUUUUUUUUUUT" @ 3'37 => 3'47 ;-) Sting 1 Challenger 0. Precious, hilarious moment!

I love how Sting was surprised the first time, but encouraged Roger the second time by looking at him with a smile and saying, "c'mon." @ 2:58; as if daring him to sing out again. After the second time Sting comments incredulously, but says it clearly with a smile on his face. Sting gets the laugh @ 3:36 when he looks again at Roger and says, "try this," and then belts out the near final note for 12 seconds. I think if Sting really was bothered he would have said something meaner.

I could not disagree more. Rock & Roll is a far more loose, raw art form, and pretending you didn't fuck up when everyone knows you did is phoniness that should be saved for vaudeville. Your way of thinking is straight out of 1940.

***** But there is another point here: all of your students at the college together wouldn't be able to sound like this performance here, because Sting sounds like the whole Police. Classically trained guitarists are notorious for speaking all the time about chords, speed, tune-out of tune etc, but this is rock'n'roll. One note - and you are a legend, but no one could do it like him. This is like comparing an Italo-Disco keybord player with 2 fingers with Rick Wakeman. I vote for the Italo.
