The Irish Cob (or Gypsy Vanner in the US) had always been one of my favorite horses❤️, Irish is also in my DNA. They originated from a Thoroughbred, Connemara pony and an Irish Draft horse. The look of a draft without the size. I had a Shire that was broke to ride and drive so I can say from experience, for riding, esp for a longer distance, downsizing for most ppl was a good thing, haha.

You know, I cant help but scratch my head trying to figure out what the fuss is about banners. I grew up in northern England and regularly saw travellers with the horses parked on road sides with the ponies grazing nearby. They would stay for a couple of days before being moved on by the local police. Their ponies were traded by the hundreds at the various gypsy fairs held throughout the region, they sold for very modest prices, and were used for hacking, light carting etc; they weren't considered anything special to be honest, they still aren't over there.

Thanks for your question. The Gypsy horses have a profuse mane, tail and feathers that may need to be trimmed, tails especially so they don't step on them and tear out their tails. Manes are usually left long and flowing. Their body hair also grows quickly, we have to body clip ours three times throughout the year.

Hi Tom- The hair actually performs a valuable function in keeping flies out of the wet membranes of the horses eyes. The forelock is usually pulled to the side when showing, but when out grazing or relaxing, the hair serves a valuable function in preventing insect damage to their eyes- any horse's eyes. Horses without a naturally long forelock can't get the same protection again flies and often have to wear a fly mask for protection.

There is a lot I don't know about horses . I don't ride or have one . I do know that people who breed for confirmation in dogs for instance , breed for certain exaggerated looks that prove harmful to the dog . I know many Cobs have physical problems due to confirmation . I'm wondering how long forelocks would be on a wild breed that was never bred for a certain look . Prezwalski's have short forelocks I believe . They have been on the earth longer than any breed man has bred , I would think . Nature must not have dictated a need for them to evolve with long forelocks .

  • @HorseTVGlobal

@@tommurphree5630 Hi Tom- There are a number of breeds who have naturally prolific hair growth, Gypsy horses, Friesians, Morgans and others have naturally thick manes, tails and forelocks; we've also had horses that their manes and forelocks never seem to grow. A long forelock helps keep insects and flies out of their eyes, which is useful for eye health. When you see horses wearing a fly mask, chances are they don't have a naturally long forelock to protect their eyes.

@@tommurphree5630 I'm not trying to sell you anything Tom, you said yourself you had no experience with horses, while I've owned, bred and have competed with horses for over 50 years. I don't know of anyone who breeds for a forelock. Responsible breeders breed for conformation, a functional shoulder, hip and croup, neck, feet, etc. A poorly bred horse cannot function in the same way as a well-bred horse because their conformation won't allow them to do something that well bred horses can achieve. Why does one horse have a smooth trot gait while another in the same breed has a bone jarring trot? It's conformation and the way they are put together. Every responsible breeder wants to breed a better horse with each new generation. Friesians, Andalusians, Lusitanos all have rigid conformation requirements and must go through inspections, measurements and certification before they can breed forward. Hair would be the last thing considered in breeding a horse forward I assure you, unless someone is breeding for hair above conformation in which you have horses with poor conformation as the result of it, and move quickly down the food chain. The Gypsies are a combination of several breeds, the Clydesdale, The Shire, The Friesian and the Dales Pony, all combining to bring out a smaller draft breed with a sweeter head than most draft horses. The Gypsy combines the characteristic of these four breeds and whatever came with it in the process, including hair. There will always be some who might try to breed for hair only, and people who only care about hair in the buying process above everything else- but true horse people breed for conformation and function above all else. You cannot ride hair as they say.
