    If you have one/get your hands in one, could you do a review on the leuchtturm 1917 sketchbook with the 180 gsm paper and how watercolors act on it? Cant find any good videos including this sketchbook. . Thank you!

    MyPetiteCakes Thanks. I'll try to review that but it will take a long time as I always finish my sketchbook before reviewing them.

    +MyPetiteCakes I know you didn't ask me ;) but I wanted to just give you some feedback. I've been using the Leuchtturm 1917 sketchbook for the last month or so trying out a large variety of mediums and tools just to test the limits. Normal Watercolors: The paper holds up quite well to wet techniques (watercolor and ink), however you don't get those beautiful bleeds like you would with watercolor paper. The pigment stays where it lands, basically. Also, depending on how much you work onto the paper, the surface tends to rub off and lose paper. I do have to say, however, that it's because I do tend to enjoy using a lot of water. Watercolor Pencils, put on dry and made wet with a Water Brush: This technique seemed to work quite well. There's a much more controlled use of water so you don't get the paper wearing quite as much. If I were to recommend the leuchtturm for a wet technique, this would be it. All in all, as an everyday watercolor sketchbook it's not bad. But if your goal is getting color to flow and react you're not really going to get it from the Leuchtturm.

    Leuchtturm can't handle watercolour at all. You can maybe get away with a bit of it if you mix some gum Arabic in with your water, but in the end it's a dry medium kind of book. I used some gouache when I really wanted colour. Or ecoline inks.

    Your reviews on all the Stillman & Birn sketchbooks are really helpful. But for those who can't decide, the company will send you a little sample pack of their papers. Not big pieces, about index card size...but certainly big enough for one to get a good feel for the paper.

    Yes, they are. I didn't think I'd like the Epsilon paper until I tried it in the sample pack. It's not as smooth as one would imagine.

    Great review. I just found out about this sketchbook in January 2018. I got the Gamma series. This will likely be my go-to brand from now on.

    Thank you for sharing all your know-how. I like your sketches and love it when you flip through your sketchbooks so I can peak at your work! What is the name of the Stilman and Birn sketchbook that is landscape format about 5" x 8"....landscape format of the delta?

    Thank you for reply! I once got a sampler from Stillman and Birn and found what I wanted in that stack of samplers but could not find a sketch book that I wanted in the format, size and paper quality so I started making my own sketchbooks. Now I see they MAKE them! Thank you! By the way did I ever mention that I love your series of videos because I tend to use the same old reliable products and rarely bother to purchase new stuff any more because it gets too expensive to buy everything new that appears on the retailers' shelves! I now have my own collection of stuff I do not want to use....! So thank you for sparing me the expensive and heartache of "art supply disappointment"! What brought me here in the beginning was your fabulous sketches! So keep up the great work!

    Happy Friday, Teoh! If you were to pick a favorite that you like working with, would it be Alpha or the Beta/Delta paper? I just purchased the Alpha with your link, but almost think I may want to get the Beta for the heavier paper. Like you, not a fan of the offwhite paper, so the Delta is out. Just wondering which paper works best for the kind of media you use. thanks!

    My preference is for actual watercolour paper. Stillman & Birn sketchbooks are good but watercolour paper is just better. So I actually prefer the watercolour journal by Global Art Materials. www.parkablogs.com/picture/review-watercolor-sketchbook-200gsm-global-art-materials

    Hi Teoh, when you draw people such as at 5:05, do you ever begin with pencil or are you able to get good form and figure without needing to edit what you've put down on the paper? I'm trying to improve my drawing and observation skills and maybe think I should be more inclined to sketch with a material that I can't "undo".

  • @teohyc

    William Marler You have to pay attention to where the main features of the body and get those down first. Those main features will help you locate and draw in other parts of the body. For example, the top (below the shorts) and end of the feet, top and end of the hands or arms, bottom of the collar and chin, top of the head. Or you can try practising with just one line, draw in one side of the arm, or leg, so that you can fill in later. Drawing the face and shape of the head will require a lot of observation because the placement of the features are extremely important to make one recognisable. I'll make a video on how to draw people in the future.

    +William Marler Hi, I've just uploaded a video on drawing human figures. It's a course by my friend Don Low. Just search for "How to Draw Expressive Human Figures by Don Low" and it should show up. Audio's not the best though.

    Which of these sketchbooks will work best with Copic multiliners and microns? I'm new to watercolors and want to mix my inking with them. Would cold press be too textured for them?

  • @teohyc

    @teohyc

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Funandots Col Coldpress texture is alright, just that the Copic Multiliner tips might wear out faster. If you want to use watercolour over the lines, I suggest getting paper that works well with watercolour paper. You can check out this comparison table at www.parkablogs.com/picture/stillman-and-birn-sketchbooks-first-impression

    Thank you that was really helpful. So Alpha is in between textured and smooth. I don't plan to make a lot of washes for what I want to do so maybe the Alpha series is best for me.

    Does the sketchbook have two textures or just one? Because in my current sketchbook, one side has a cold press texture while the other side has a hot press texture

  • @teohyc

    @teohyc

    Sometimes the paper will have two sides with different textures because only one side is pressed. Happens with most paper. One side is always smoother.

    Hi Teoh, i wanted to understand what these paper are made of if its not 100 percent cotton etc.. what makes it usable or good for watercolour? Thank you!

  • @teohyc

    Two factors. Paper must not dull the colour. Paper must allow water to move freely so that colours can blend. Do a search on how to choose good watercolour paper. I’m sure there is a video on this topic

    I used the epilson for copics and it’s great for blending because of the smoothness!
