I’m just gonna say I just purchased a 2022 Mazda CX 5 premium. This car was never even on my radar, my best friend had on two of these cars and said that I would be crazy not to consider one. I had a Toyota RAV4 hybrid and a Toyota Prius hybrid both were within three years of this car and I must say Toyotas were like a tin can in comparison. The noise levels inside of both cars were off the charts there was so much road noise in both my Toyota Prius and my 2020 RAV4 hybrid. I have always been a Toyota fan but this Mazda has definitely changed my mind. Granted it’s not the fancy turbo model but remember I came from a Toyota Prius so I’m not that power-hungry. Driving it home from the dealer it was a 3 Hour Dr. and set the cruise control at 65 and I got 36 miles per gallon yes I varied my speed never going over 65 mph for optimal engine break-in. My best friend said if you don’t get the Mazda CX 5 with the Bose radio I would be very disappointed because I am a huge music fan. He was right absolutely so glad I got the Bose ❤️ ,is it a perfect SUV in my eyes almost, when you go on a road trip and all you hear is road noise it is not a good experience. Both of my Toyotas had horrible road noise. This Mazda is very quiet. If you haven’t driven a CX 5 ,I recommend this SUV .

Yes Kia and Hyundai are definitely excelling in the tech and interior space but what you don’t see in Mazda (as far as I know ) is a recall of over 500 000 of vehicles engines catching fire.

True, a pretty public bummer; however, you see large preventative recalls from major automakers fairly frequently, sometimes in very scary sounding ways. Remember the whole Chevy Bolt might burn down your house recall? Not great, even though the likelihood was slim. But it's a fair point. Mazdas tend to be fairly reliable over time, at least as much as Honda. Thanks for watching!

Yup Kia and Hyundai wows you with the tech but I would not go near them, Mazda is doing the right thing by following Lexus foot steps make changes only when it becomes more reliable and not be the first to offer it.

@@mikezou9929 not on the same league buddy. LG and Samsung move large amounts of consumer tech, a few duds are expected but nothing close to what Kia and Hyundai are putting out which is a complete disgrace.

I own a 2020 CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve. Love the handling, and the generous low end torque of the turbo. A driver's car disguised as a crossover. Thanks Mazda for adding luxury features even though it's not considered a luxury brand and not priced like one either.

I bought mine when my son graduated. I placed the order in June and received my CX5 GS Mazda in Sept 2022. Love the look, stylish design, roof, luxury interior and spacious n great soft leather seats. Love the back, butt and steering wheel driving all heated are great for winter. The signals, automatic wiper and lights are fabulous. My son and I love this car and got it for $42K CAD. It is a good buy according to me. RAV4 was $50+ not as attractive as CX GS Mazda in white. Hi Jax, a thorough review as always. The pros and cons you covered are spot on 👍. While the CX-5 certainly lacks some driver assistance tech, it makes up for it in the driving experience and feel of quality. To me the biggest stand-out is how light the CX-5 feels to handle. I recently test drove the Genesis GV70 with the V6 engine, plenty of power but the driver inputs feel incohesive, it's like the steering and gas & brake pedals were designed by two different teams, the chassis was also floaty and hollow, maybe I was just not used to their tuning. Interior design is stylish, but some of the touch points like the center control where the AC buttons are, feel flimsy and cheap (it moves when I touch it), turned out to be let down for me. When stepped back in the CX-5, at least the Mazda is screwed very well together, despite some "cheating" in material use as you mentioned. And the driver inputs are much more natural. Did you find that to be the case when you reviewed it? You seemed to really like the GV70.

You're right: I really love the GV70. But the CX-5, despite what Mazda wants to say, still competes in the mainstream category, and as such it's an excellent vehicle compared against that market segment. I think my overall thesis is that if Mazda truly wants to make moves upmarket, it's going to have to be an all-encompassing attack. They can no longer coast on pretty exterior design, peerless handling dynamics, and above average interior materials... that disguise a relatively lacking tech package and options list. Sadly, most mainstream customers just don't value dynamic excellence the way Mazda needs them to in order to win.

The cx5 is more of a upscale near premium segment vs crv and rav4. Imagine if they would have replace the cx5 interior with the new cx60 interior it would leave the other 2 in the dust in terms of premium.

Jax, I really enjoyed your evaluation of the CX-5. You clearly showed your knowledge of this cars strengths, weaknesses and where Mazda needs to improve on the tech side to keep pace with the competition. I like everything about the Turbo, but I wish the tech and safety systems were on par with the competition, and that my keep me from purchasing one. Maybe I will wait for next years model to see if they address those areas.

I have a 2016 CX-5 and waiting for my 2022 CX-5. Mazda email says that the vehicle has just come off the assembly line. The CX-5 has been a great vehicle to own and drive. I can carry my full size bike without taking off any wheels. The way space is measured in vehicles sometimes does not mean much. The RAV4 looks like a tractor compared to the CX-5. The heavy front end on Kia and Hyundai vehicles are going to date very quickly. You did not spend much time on drive train comparisons. For the price of the CX-5, it still has a very good engine/gearbox combination.

Hey Jax, not sure if I missed this or misremembering, doesn't the turbo do 320 lb-ft of torque with 93 octane? 310 was mentioned in the video. Also, I love the production on your video. Sound levels, camera switches, all made it really fluid.

I’m not 100% sure that everyone wants huge screens. It’s easy for manufacturers to bolt on a screen too; but we have already seen that physical controls for air conditioning/heating return in some models. I think the minimalist look become less popular.

Jax, excellent review. I own a 2016 CX5 Grand Touring with 29K miles. I thought you might have mentioned the elephant in the room regarding the Lifetime transmission fluid in the 6 speed. It is in my opinion a marketing gimmick to lead consumers into the belief of lower maintenance costs. Ok fine, but back it up like the Koreans do with a 10 year 100K drivetrain warranty. My dealer won't change the fluid, the one in the next town will. My dealer advises not to do it and the other one is going against Mazda's recommendations. The Mazda has great reliability and I want to keep it for a long time, but the trans fluid thing sticks in my mind. 5K to replace it if fails. I really like the fact that mine with it's NA 2.5 doesn't have cylinder deactivation or start/stop technology. I know the turbos don't either, but I don't feel the need for turbo in the CX5 nor the added expense in purchase, fuel economy and repair costs.

Great video! The Mazda CX-5 is my favorite vehicle period! I have the 22 CX-5 Premium Love it but I hate the new pizza wheels. What was Mazda thinking? They should have kept the old wheels and also added a digital speedometer. I love the new CX-60. It looks like an extra upscale CX-5. Too bad it'd bit coming to the states!!! 😔😔😔

The refreshed head+tail lights seem like they were updated just for the sake of updating, and don’t actually go with the overall look of the exterior design the way the original ones do. So the 2022 models just look cheap now (in my opinion.) That upcoming cx60 or w/e it’s called looks very interesting to me, can’t wait to see that.

you are totally right about everything, but you can't really buy a sportage at this price. MSRP is comparable, but dealers will add market adjusted price and these adjustments are insane like 5k$ or even 8k$. Also Kia is not cheaper, CX-5 top trims has turbo, while Sportage's trims doesn't have powerful motor. If you compare cx-5 premium plus and good trim on sportage they are about the same msrp. For cx-5 you usually can still find something in stock for MSRP.

I think the problem for Mazda is that most mainstream buyers will find the Kia’s engine options strong enough for them and the turbo power in the CX-5 won’t be the draw. As for pricing, the Kia IS more affordable if you go by MSRP. The reason I continue to do so is because the dealership model as it stands is outdated and ridiculous, and their price gouging tactics are going to have long term negative consequences even if they’re posting short term gains. I will NEVER buy a vehicle from a dealer attempting to use these tactics currently. I hope more people do the same. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻

I'd like to know the cargo capacity with rear seats down, whether the seats fold flat (can you sleep in the back), and can the spare tire well hold a full-size spare (not just a compact spare).

Even though I’m a RAV4 fan, I got admit the handling of the Mazda is good and the front of the vehicle is very appealing. But as yet no hybrids. I believe Mazda will soon be adopting the Rav4 hybrid power train. Nice vehicle the Mazda. NZ

I think I should have clarified: it does have a lane keeping assist feature (which is decent at best), but it doesn’t have a steering assist function to maintain lanes over longer distances or around curves, which at this price point starts to become expected. I am not able to decide between a used 2020 Honda CRV touring with 28000 miles and 2022 Mazda CX-5 2.5 S Premium Plus with 9000 miles. Mazda being $2000 more than Honda. Any suggestions. This is for my first time teen driver.

Always go cheaper and older for a teen driver. They’ll inevitably ding and scratch it up with their mistakes. No point in getting anything too nice for a new driver. The CR-V is roomier anyway, and just as safe.

Could you please address the rust problems (underneath) the car/crossover SUV Maza's have. Also, I have read complaints about the giant size key fob with buttons sticking out on the side. I read that owners were unknowingly unlocking trunks and other stuff because of the buttons stick out. Plus, you still have to open with the key. At least this is what I have read. I looked into purchasing a new 2023 Honda CRV-EX-L, but was turned off when I read that they went to the CVT. Plus, a 1.5L engine! I currently own a 2014 Honda CRV-EX-L with a 2.5L engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission. It only has 33,614 miles on it. I know I should probably keep it for the long haul, but I got a hankering for a new one. But that idea is dead since the new CRV's have the 1.5L engine with CVT. They won't last long or be reliable IMHO.

Haven’t heard anything about the rust issue, myself, so I would confirm the source on that. The fob is normal sized but the side buttons can be a minor irritation (at most). I’d probably just keep yours since it’s practically brand new, but I don’t think you have anything to fear from Honda CVTs. They’re not Nissan.

There difference is, the Kia is made in Korea, while the Mazda CX-5 is made in Japan.

Yes and no. It sometimes seems to be an issue with automakers (GM) that needs fixing, and even Mazda has recalled cars for issues with CD. That being said, the tech has no been around for a while, so those issues have been sorted and it should perform more reliably. I wouldn’t necessarily worry about it since the overall reliability ratings and data on most Mazdas is pretty darn good. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

Really just a great review. I own a 2020 CX5 reserve and so am very familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of the vehicle. My previous car was a BMW 3 series and I do miss the driving dynamics but the Mazda does come close. Close but not quite there. Upon lease ending I will be looking hard at the new CX70. It will have to elevate driving feel to nearer the BMW for me to pull the trigger. RWD and a 6 cylinder engine will help.

Always the best commentary. We need to root Mazda on as they offer something completely different in driving experience than anyone else. I do love the simplicity of the gauge cluster, as it just has that classic and elegant look that is easy on the eyes day and night. And cool that you mentioned the bottom hinged gas pedal, another cool oddity that also shows up in mini coopers, which now that I think about it is another cool niche company whose models change very slowly. Curious about their Skyactive x and why is has nothing hit the states yet. Without it Mazda will need to get that hybrid system from Toyota.

I kind of want Toyota to swallow Mazda honestly, let them continue work on their RWD lineup, and move Lexus even farther upmarket. There's no reason why Lexus models should have lightly disguised Toyota infotainment systems, even in the newest models. Or... (and this would never happen), flip it and move Mazda WAY upmarket. They're more stylish than Lexus, will probably handle better, and have a bit more freedom for experimentation than what the Lexus brand symbolizes (although I could be wrong because the LC is dope).

320 lbs or torque when using Premium. The 310 is when using regular. And the cluster, if you press info button, the center cluster will change a little. It will display more animations with the radar system. But yea a little too simple and outdated. Still a great little SUV. Enjoying mine!

Not sure why you criticised the transmission. Lots of people don't want a problematic and clunky DCT/CVT. The standard torque converter gear box is actually a plus for these cars.

Mazda has been using its trusty 6 gear auto forever, so it’s a known quantity. No issues. It’s pretty darn smooth at highway speeds as well.

What I don't like about adaptive cruise control is that it is too aggressive in applying the brakes. My nephew has an Audi and it is the same. You will need to replace brake pads and rotors much too soon if you use it a lot, unless there is very little traffic ahead of you. It waits too long to slow up when approaching another vehicle and then has to brake much harder than you would if you just eased up on the gas or gently tapped the brakes.

I agree. The Mazda system is not as well sorted as some of its competitors, which needs to be improved when competing in a more premium segment.

@@robertdevoy3119 All of them will jump on the brakes when someone cuts you off. Hyundai and Kia are solid, especially Genesis. I like Ford’s as well. Acura also seems to get it mostly right. I’m mainly looking at the smoothness of braking in non emergency situations and how quickly and smoothly the vehicle accelerated after slowing down. Just my seat of the pants observations.

@@jax1079 Yes.... the Mazda is good at responding to emergencies, but not so good with normal adaptive cruise control duties. I only use it when traffic is very light. Actually, I love my car and have very few nits to pick. Even the 6 speed tranny is great, especially, with the turbo. But I wonder if the turbo would be necessary with an equally good 8 speed? Perhaps, better gas mileage at the top end and more grunt in the low end and midrange.

I tried to buy the CX-5 three times last year when I was looking for a new crossover. I found the driver's position inconvenient for me. I didn't like the interior in general but I would close my eyes to that. I would also close my eyes to the crammed rear seats and awfully looking rear exterior part. Why I would do that? Because at that time I was under anti-CVT paranoia (added correction: I put "anti-CRV paranoia" - it was a misprint. I meant CVT). The attractive points were a regular transmission and a regular engine. Was the driver's seat really inconvenient? I tried a few times with the same result. Then I started from fresh. After thorough research and test drives I decided to give a try Subaru's CVT as an exception. A few month later I came back to Mazda dealership to get another look. My Outback was waiting for me at the parking lot. I set in the CX-5... After the Outback, driving this car would be a punishment. What a difference! I have been driving Outback for a year now. My friend tried it and rushed to the same dealer and bought... the Forester. Since then the cars are best friends - almost like our friends and us. I drive the Forester from time to time. No comparison with the CX-5 either. For the record: I have never thought about buying a Subaru. I've had three Hondas, so my first option was the CR-V. And it was my disappointment: CVT+Turbo=No go. I still don't accept CVTs with the only exception for Subaru.

Hope you have better luck than most of us. We owned 2 Subarus. 2007 outback & 2003 Forester. Both were unreliable. At 30,000 km the outback was consuming oil. The Forester had fuel line leaks, oil consumption, wheel bearing, clutch problems. Every service was 300 dollars as well. Family members have Mazda CX 5. My nephew's has 320,000 km.changed only spark plugs. My wife had 240,00 before trading. She did not likes the seat. So maybe seat could be an issue but for reliable manufacturer, Mazda are much better than Subaru. The drive of the Mazda is much more enjoyable. Not to mention the CVT problems for Subaru. Just Google on it. In closing, I do hope you have better luck

@@ontarioman6301 Thank you! My Honda CR-V had 325 000 km when I bought a replacement for my lovely Honda. I wanted another CR-V but.... CVT+Turbo=no deal. The Rav4 turned out to be too noisy. The CX-5 had uncomfortable driver's seat.... The Rogue had CVT (the worst of them) and 4* safety rating instead of 5*. A real CR-V is now larger than I need and is called Honda Passport. But I need a compact crossover. So I bought the Outback. My closest friend has had 4th gen Forester for 6 years with no issues. I am not a Subaru man. Honestly I wouldn't imagine buying a Subaru a few years ago. But the 6th gen Outback is such a striking difference from the previous generation that I decided to take a plunge. Thanks for the great review. I value the CX-5's handsome looks - it's great driving experience and that turbo engine. Enough for me to overlook the lack of technology. Rav4, Tucson, Sportage are just plain ugly compared to the CX-5. I do have the 2022 lower trim with the na engine, I'm trading that in for this and can't wait 😀

@@jax1079 You pronounced Mazda incorrectly. LOL. Japanese pronounce it Martsz-da. You said maaz·duh. Japanese also say the word twice as fast as you did. But then that's not my problem.

Mazda cx5 for 2022 does not have wireless Apple CarPlay. You have to plug your lightning cable to car USB causing wear to your plug on your phone. Ever time you get into your car you have to plug in. So much for the advantage of having wireless charging. You still have to plug in. 2021 had wireless CarPlay but they had problems do they removed it in 2022. Instead of fixing the problem they went backwards and removed. Come on Mazda get with technology. This is disappointing. Please come up with a fix and do an update to the 2022’s so there is wireless CarPlay.

I don’t disagree with the sentiment, but the idea that plugging your phone into the car will wear on it is not really a problem. It’s just an inconvenience, which I get. Mazda needs to update the infotainment for sure. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

I have to disagree on the design. It's showing its age now. And really Mazda needs to more styling to be more competitive and while at that at add the touch screen functionality.

The Kia is over 1 second slower to 60 and doesn't have a larger engine unless you go hybrid. I will admit the tech looks great in the Kia. I just couldn't get past the front end styling.

@@jax1079 Agreed. I had a deposit on a CX-5 and a Sportage. I already own Mazdas and decided that driving dynamics and the upscale interior / exterior styling were more important BUT it was a close call.

@@lesm285 Great for you, the consumer, but if Mazda wishes to be cross shopped with BMW and Mercedes (much less Acura and Lexus), they're going to have to raise their game... and not a parallel move like the CX-50, either. The new platform will be critical to their aspirational success. I hope they make it; I'm a big Mazda fan, myself.

@@jax1079 Totally agree. I am not in the position to buy something like an MDX or XC60 so I feel like Mazdas are the next best thing for now.

Personally i prefer less tech and its why im considering getting one in addition to its high reliability. So much tech will be a big headache later on as car ages. Less is sometimes more. Ty for your review

True, in some models such as the CX-9, but I believe the CX-5 maxes at 310 on premium.

320 torque not 310 , Transmission is made by Mazda and is very different than an average , torque converter /clutch in the middle /transmission... all one piece .

Addressed it in an earlier review of the CX-5, and yes, it is tight; however, if you’re planning on carrying four full-sized adults in your SUV very often, the CX-5 probably isn’t on your list. The back seat is fine for kids, though. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

@@jax1079 Not first hand, but a friend has a kia optima 2.0 T-GDI... lot of problems over 3 years. At least their warranty is great :)

Maybe if you would get a ticket for tailgating (fine and points off your license) then you would be okay with distance of radar cruise control. Don't look at you DAMN phone while you're driving. Lane centering will most likely train people to be lazy and dependent on technology, and they won't keep their hands on the steering wheel.

You simply won't get the perfection of a 52K Lexus for the price of 40K. That is the trade off. But I think Mazda found a good niche there which gives you a lot of car for the money. As far at the competition goes, I still don't see a reason to take a chance on a KIA unless you are planning to get rid of it after five years. Reviews like this put no emphasis on owning a car beyond the five year mark. Reliability ratings are much more important to regular car owners, and I am talking about REAL reliability ratings and not the JD Power kind that car manufacturers can purchase.

I don’t disagree, but I would point out that there are WAY more people getting rid of cars between 5-10 years than there used to be, and many people (for better or worse) choose to lease vehicles and rotate them. Look, I’m like you: we currently have an 11 year old Chevy Suburban with 170k miles on it as our main family car. We KEEP vehicles. But lots of people don’t, so longevity is certainly part of the discussion but not the only selling point. (For example, we got my 17 year old a Toyota RAV4 for that very reason, but many of her friends drive Jeeps 😬)

The lane assist is just that..an assist. It would be dangerous to be anything else…

year later and mazda has not strenghtened their weaknesses. They say new gen for 2025 model year.

Your review is close to the mark but I wouldn't call it "Still the best barely" and here is why..... I would rather a CX 5 over a Sportage or Tucson any day of the year. I owned a Tucson and the dual clutch is horrible at low speeds plus interior switches on the steering wheel and electronic brake kept breaking and were not cheap tog et replaced. Add to that the door entry buttons/solenoids died and had to be replaced 3 times all I can say is never again. Buy a Hyundai or Kia at your own peril, give me a quality Mazda please even with reduced tech, tech is not be all and end all but a quiet, smooth ride in a car that doesn't jerk around at low speeds or whine like a stuffed pig and handles beautifully is the car for me. I also test drove a sportage and while I did like the screens the rest was pretty average as far as quality of the finish and quietness of the car and ride went. We chose the CX 5 over the Sportage, Seltos, Mitsubish Outlander. We also test drove the Lexus NX and RX for completeness and comparison and honestly if I could afford an NX I would get that without question but to me the CX 5 is almost as good as far as ride and comfort goes.

I see your point for sure, but I’d consider the CR-V and RAV4 to both be bigger players in the segment built on years of long term quality and reliability. The CR-V is the best all arounder (although I haven’t tested the new one yet), and the RAV4 is the best hybrid, general use, and by far most reliable (we own one, full disclosure). I actually really like the Koreans and said the Tucson PHEV was generally better than the RAV4 Prime to live with, but if I was spending my own money… it would be on the Prime. I’d get a CX-5 before just about anything myself, but the RAV4 was for our 17 year old to drive so I wanted something that would last longer than the Earth. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

The front of the Cx5 looks great.... the back is MEH in terms of design kinda has looked like this for 'many years'... NEGATIVES (👎)Infotainment😑Wheel control is distracting and difficult to use whole moving... a touchscreen setup is much better . Rear Leg Room (👎) my legs are pinned once I sit behind myself and I'm over 6ft. If someone my height sits behind me.. it will be an uncomfortable ride for us both (this applies to the CX9 as well ) The trunk space is too small.Reverse camera (👎) its awful to look at... its like the vehicle needs to be about 4 inches long. This is rental at best..It would be better to buy a Rav4.

Yes and no. The RAV4 is more spacious but currently comes with Toyota’s horribly outdated infotainment system that is no better than the Mazda system, plus the interior is nowhere nearly as nice as the Mazda. The CX-5 is big enough for most people versus its main competitors, but they’re evolving more quickly than the Mazda. That’s where the CX-5 needs to be careful. @@jax1079 Fair point Jax, but what do you think of the 2023, or USA might call it the 2024 infotainment cockpit of the RAV4.they’ll be using the one that the Lexus has. Can you look at the new images and let me know what you think of the future RAV4 cockpit.

Competition is a wonderful thing. The others upped their game and so Mazda must do so also. Too bad Mazda is slow to get it done and is nearly always playing catch up, especially, on the tech front. I have a 2019 Signature and love the quality, the driving pleasure, and upscale feel. However, their nav system stinks and I use Android Auto instead which is way more accurate in getting me to my destination. Hopefully, they will maintain this quality feel with the CX-70, but it sure is a long wait. And I hope they don't force me to buy a combo gas/electric engine when upgrading to the CX-70 or else I'll just keep what I have now.

I am looking forward to the CX-70 as well. I think most brands will be moving towards some form of gas/electric hybrid systems in the future, but perhaps they will do it in the same way Toyota is offering full EVs, plug-in hybrids, hybrid assist, and true hybrids. I like that approach because it keeps an element of choice in the market; however, I'm not sure Mazda has the resources to pull something like that off. Time will tell. Thanks for watching!

Why do a review on the signature when the majority of buyers cant afford it? Personally I think the premium package has enough bells and whistles. You are way late to the game. There have been numerous reviews on the CX5.

The average new car price in America is over $40k, sooo…. I’m guessing more than half the country can afford this vehicle (or at least they’re willing to get into a five year loan for it).

Test drive them all and decided on CX 5 Premium Plus..Hyundai and Kia look nice but to many issues..Honda and Toyota way overpriced. CX 5 best value for the price. I just don't reccomended the Turbo motor due to some fairly major issues. If its a lot of power you want buy something with 3.0/ 3.6 liter V6
