I freaking LOVE your take on this subject 💜 the last still life I did was probably 3 years ago in a class I was taking, just starting off watercolor. I remember being annoyed that we had to do this bucket of apples, but by the end of the (very long) process I loved and appreciated how they turned out. You've inspired me to want to revisit this subject! :)
I don’t know how anyone could think still life would be boring! You can paint ANYTHING!!! Including a bunch of dinosaur toys. =>.
I think there are no boring subjects in art (or in the broader creative field), just uninspired artists. We can inject emotions, styles, flair, perspective, point of view, etc... into just about any topic we choose. I think it's great that you continue to challenge yourself on areas that might have made you uncomfortable. Not just art, but life in general.
When I was 20 I took a community college drawing class and we only did still life drawing. It made me give up drawing for 6 years! I'm a very narrative centred person, so just painting random objects doesn't hold any interest for me. I get why people do it and why it's good for honing the skills, but I simply can't do it. Whenever I feel in a funk I go back to drawing animals or painting landscapes. I might even draw animals in landscapes 😉 other people hate drawing animals and find backgrounds boring. We're all different and that's good! You know what's funny though? Watching you paint a still life was surprisingly interesting! You managed to give it quite a bit of character too, so we'll done! Just don't force me to paint one of these myself 😂

How the fuck did you come to the conclusion that still life can't have a narrative focus. It's literally everyday objects that tell most stories in art (be it painting, music, cinema or whatever). Not lanscapes.
You definitely changed the way I see still life paintings
I love still life and not just the way it can reflect beauty but the amount of details or the simplicity or deatials you dont usually notice on things and how the light reflects on the items and the cast shadows that it can create.
I totally agree. I love still life painting and that's how I feel about it. Bringing out the artistic side of ordinary objects, the beauty which other might miss in looking at them. Yeah still life is exciting !
I learned how to draw, shade and create values by drawing and painting still life's. That's what you do in art classes and it's the best way to learn to draw realistically.
Duuuuude we are so on the same wavelength lately- it’s uncanny!! And makes me so happy. I was doing a skull study with a magenta background and then saw your beautiful skull studies. I have been thinking about still life paintings a lot for color studies. I used to think they were boring too but I’ve realized that I’d rather hang a still life in my kitchen. In fact, I was planning on doing a lemon still life for my kitchen because I’m redecorating with lots of yellow! It’s so exciting to see you doing these studies. I love what you said about the “life” aspect of still life. It’s also kind of a snapshot into everyday life. This painting definitely exudes warmth. I want to sit in that kitchen and have a glass of wine while cooking and chatting with a friend. Lovely work as always! You’re amazing!!!!! 🤗

WAAAAAH I've been thinking that we're on the same page a lot lately too!! You mentioned getting out that skull for studies, and I JUST got a skull myself to do the same thing! ;-; Thank you so much, YOU ARE ALSO AMAZING ♥♥
holy crap I love you. you made me realize that I should do more still life because you can make something still and then turn it into something amazing, warm, and emotion! for this, thank you! 💜
i've been going through an art block as well so i really appreciate this video! i tend to turn towards abstract paintings when i'm going through a block, i should try still life as well
maybe you could do something abstract. that's what i do when i feel that "art block." maybe that's a good way to segway into oils, or acrylic. i remember you saying that you wanted to get in to oils. i played with chalk that was left out in the rain and dried a bit. they where a lot of fun!
I saw Cezanne's The Ginger Jar at the Barnes last year and it took my breath away! Something about it made me feel as if I might cry just for the beauty of it. I never anticipated such a reaction, but there I was...astonished at the painting and my reaction.
I recently thought about painting a still life and I think this video actually pushed me to do it. Amazing content ❤️❤️
when you say emotion or communicate emotion in the still life, I think it more as atmosphere. that is what it can be so powerful in a still life, the play of light and dark, the focus of something, and it is pretty challenging to get textures right.
this was so refreshing, i loved your thoughts about still life painting. i've only ever done one (1) still life drawing, to apply to art school, where i did a pencil sketch of my melatonin jar lol. i got in tho!! anyway this video made me wanna do it more, it was very uplifting :) hope you're taking good care of yourself! xx
I have thought that still life is pretty boring but when I actually take the time to do them, I find them extremely relaxing vs life drawing. Why? Because, an apple (whether colored or black n white) will always look like an apple. A book, a toy car, a vase will always look like that even if you stretch the shapes a little or use some funky colors. A person on the other hand...you know immediately when it looks off and then that knocks you right out of the flow. I find your videos super relaxing and bright! Thank you for sharing!
Lovely! I was thinking about doing some still life painting to get acquainted with my new acryla gouache :) This video was very inspiring and I feel very motivated now!
In art class we do daily Drawing From Observation exercises and that usually means drawing/painting the objects that were donated to the class. The objects we have are really kitchy, ugly pieces which is what led me to loathe still lives despite knowing it's good for technical practice. Your video made me stop and think about how insanely wrong I am. I have beautiful objects around my house and if I know how to set them up, I'm sure I could actually enjoy bringing them to life. Thank you so much for the inspiration!
This is so true. One of the first things we did on an illustration course was drawing/painting still life objects with diffrent emotions in mind and then getting the others in the class to say what emotions or feelings the piece made them think of.
Your painting looks really beautiful💕 watching this makes me want to try still life painting!!!
I've never really been interested in painting still life, but I remember watching part of a video (possibly by Sycra) about creating caricatures of everything, and you both said something similar about infusing an inanimate object with its own character or personality. I also strongly believe that people are more easily able to see themselves in things they have more in common with, and that's part of the reason why it's easy to identify with other humans and certain animals, but plants and other more stationary life are treated more like objects. What you said in this video really explains how an artist can capture something in a way a camera can't
Nice! And definitely not boring😉
Inspiring! "give life...paint beauty into them..." Thank you!
I just got my new set of kuretake gansai tambi paints and I've been feeling really inspired to paint more! I'm definitely gonna give still lifes a try again!!
Thanks Arleebean I love where you are going with these videos. They are helping me understand things a bit better. Good to know I have company on this journey
Loved this video! In my old art class we always had to draw still life paintings. It wasn’t my favorite but what you said in this video was so true! Great video as always!
I love still life
Aaaa this looks beautiful I love your art
I love warm tones/colors always make me feel all cozy :)
Beautiful work! Love how you did the marble of the mortar and pestle. 😁
Very pretty!
I'm so bored I'm here sitting in bed watching vids in the summer. IN THE SUMMER. Ya. I blame my parents. 😐 But I still liked this. 🙂
I enjoyed seeing you paint other subjects. I like your portraits but I love seeing artists broaden what they do too. I think maybe that's why we get stuck because we get bored doing the same thing or our mind wants to expand and it can't when there is no challenge or excitement in making art.
Love it💛
in french we call still life 'nature morte' , which is even worse because it literaly translate as "dead nature" xD I really enjoy this video, thank you for the inspiration!!!
I never thought still life was boring. When I was a child I spent a lot of time at my grandmothers house and she loved art. So I would always watercolor with her and she painted still lifes a lot so I painted what she painted so I grew up with it. But I can completely see how people would hear it and not think its interesting or fun,
inspiring...thanks
"give life to your art" hm. Ib vibes.
❤️
what colours do you use here...it is lovely...but would love to know what colours you are using with the watercolours you use...thank you!

I would say the main colors I used for this piece were quinacridone gold (Daniel Smith), raw sienna (Daniel Smith), mineral violet (M Graham), cerulean blue chromium (Daniel Smith), bismuth yellow (M Graham), and quinacridone rust (M Graham).
Very nice painting! I used to draw something like that when I was a child, but I'm going to give it a try eventually, thank you for this video!
Btw is it just me or do you always have a problem with your art?
