    @@FPAlpha don't the Fremen smuggle spice offworld to a bunch of planets? (Hence no satellites over Arrakis). You're telling me they can't go back home with ships full of water on those return flights? They got the spacing guild in a chokehold because of their addiction to spice.

  • @FPAlpha

    @@TayGizzle No they don't as it is not yet known that the Fremen have the potential to wipe out Spice production forever, Paul makes this public at the end when they win the war and he uses this nuclear option to get everyone including the Guild ( which in reality is more powerful than the Emperor) under control. They could go back with the smuggler's, Jessica mentions this in the movie but Paul decides to stay and fight the war. I was talking about your assumption that they could pay with water from Caladan, which is theoretically possible but they don't have control over Caladan anymore as they had to give it up to take over on Arrakis. In any way why would the Fremen accept such a flimsy offer when they have 2 people full of water right in front of them? Fremen are very practical and direct - better have the spoils now than to trust the word of an outsider.

    @@TayGizzle The Harkonnens control most of the spice mining. Remember the big spice harvesters? They exist both in the book and in the movie. The Freman don't have those. As for Caladan, the Atreides no longer control it after the death of Leto. Paul could stake his claim as the legal heir, he is a Duke so technically Caladan belongs to him. But without military power he would be killed. And without political or military power, the Guild would not help him. SPOILERS... of course after the Harkonens are defeated, Paul controls all spice mining and indeed uses that to force the Guild to do his bidding and off-world water is transported to Arrakis. As for this particular scene, the Freman want water now, some of their troop are likely dying of thirst. There not interested in a vague promise of some water in the future.

    I feel like this scene was cut short. In the book it emphasizes how huge a deal it was she bested Stilgar as he was the leader and thus the best of them. He accepted her because he wanted her to teach her fighting techniques and there was a good amount of negotiation. The also crammed in the fight with Janis his death and funeral. How Stilgar gave the name Usul to Paul after he admitted he never killed a man and paul beating Jamis without a scratch on him and crying for him was also a big deal as it fit him into the legend. Also how paul got the name Maub dib

Trying to cram all that content into a 2 hour run time, or even the rare 3 hour run time, just leaves out too much. But in a 10 hour season like game of thrones? It is far superior. If there were a series made at this quality, it would've been so much better. We would need so much less forced exposition and rushed scenes to get the story from A to B.

    I love how in the book, Lady Jessica tries to manipulate the Fremen by basically throwing buzzwords at them to pretend like she knows their culture and religion, even resorting to use her Bene Gesserit training, although she knows very little about Arrakis and the Fremen. It really shows a different side of the Atreides. They're clever, and use people the way rulers do, and aren't as heroic and "good" as they are in the film. Really great scene nonetheless, I loved the movie as a whole, really captured the dreamy, almost religious, vibe I got when I first red Dune.

It's also like how the Na-Baron is able to almost beat Paul and it's implied he's his equal or even better, but he's also never fought a fair fight before then. Even the one with the Atriedes who wasn't drugged was still in his favor because of those black being tasing him. Persons have to be "registered" by a Voice user to play on their unique and innate psychological profile. Thus, a Bene Gesserit adept must listen and make note of pitch, cadence, and timbre when the target is talking. The Voice is not mind control, but simply causes a momentary lapse in awareness and conscious action, and the more people are aware of it, the less it becomes effective. The Voice is not an infallible weapon, and using it against large crowds is not really possible until Paul awakens his oracular powers later, and uses his vision of time to register every single member of a congregation so that he can tailor a Voice projection and create the greatest effect. It was how he united the Fremen tribes of Arrakis together for the first time in several thousand years in the Jihad, he essentially whipped them into a fanatical frenzy of bloodlust and conquest.

I read once the Bene Geserit were even better fighters than the Emperor's shock troops. And I feel like, not using the voice every time makes it an even more serious power, like something they would use only in dire necessity, and not a show off. Jessica wasn't afraid in this scene. One of the reasons this series was so good was the brutal realism that unless you've witnessed it, may be tough to accept is how many think. The savage barbarity of a culture that celebrates murdering people for a need of their nutrients, which is little different than cannibalism, plus redefining honor to be more like a gang in the desert is not new. This scene wraps it up nicely by the celebration of murder and 'lead by martial prowess', all while claiming victimhood and willing to kill for any social slight and demanding no one dare judge their chosen path of barbarism. Our history is full of this and we see that emerging again. Frank Herbert did his homework.

  • @Anthrolithos

    @Anthrolithos

    11 ай бұрын

    Couple of issues: - Just "a" culture that celebrates murder to meet need? Do you know of any exceptions? - "Honour" is culturally defined, not universal, so an accusation of "re-definition" is a bit disingenuous. - "Leading by martial prowess" is bedrock statecraft. Not really sure how you expect the Fremen to be any different. - Not sure where you got "killing for any social slight" - Jamis is an exceptional hothead, and the book is clear that many Fremen are more even-headed. As for "claiming victimhood", the Fremen do no such thing, and they make no apologies for their existence and their struggle to be free - as for barbarism: in a universe where people are literal slaves, perhaps "bucking popular culture" is deserving of a more fitting term?

    The Fremen have been cheated, lied to, mistreated, and oppressed by the Harkonnens. They have no reason to believe the Atreides will be any different. The Atreides have nothing in this scene. The Duke is dead. Paul and Jessica are presumed dead. Their ships are destroyed, their armies are slaughtered, and The Harkonnens control Arrakis again. The Emperor backs them. No interstellar travel can be done without the Spacing guild's consent, and the guild has absolutely no reason to piss off the Harkonnens or the Emperor by running water shipments to the planet for two Atreides who everyone else thinks to be dead. Someone would look into why water shipments from Calidan (Or any other world) are coming to Arrakis and would find out that Paul and Jessica were alive, which is obviously not a good thing for them. Furthermore, the Guild accepts enormous bribes of spice from the Fremen to perpetuate the lie that the southern half of Arrakis is uninhabitable and ravaged by magnetic storms that knock down satellites, because the Fremen are secretly collecting hundreds of millions of gallons of water to terraform the planet over the next few hundred years. Also, it's mentioned earlier in the movie that the Imperial census vastly underestimates the total Fremen population of the planet. If it's discovered that the Fremen are trying to terraform the planet, and that there are an enormous number of them living in secret, the Emperor and the Bene Geserit (who are 100% reliant on Spice as an economic and political tool) will have no choice but to descend on Arrakis and slaughter all of the Fremen, because if Arrakis is no longer a desert, the sandworms will die out, and that will mean no more spice. The Guild is also terminally reliant on the spice, which leads me to believe that even though they're taking these huge bribes of spice from the Fremen, even they don't know what their true intentions are. The Fremen have been surviving on Arrakis for thousands of years. They understand and implement very effective methods for gathering water every day. They don't need, and more than that, don't WANT offworlders bringing shipments of water to Arrakis because it will only draw attention to their intentions. The Fremen, and especially Stilgar, do not have "Limited" vision. It's stressed many times in the book that Stilgar is one of the most important figures to Fremen society and he most certainly knows when someone has nothing of value to offer him.

    It might have something to do with the brief moment, as Paul and Jessica are trying to insinuate themselves into the Fremen, that Jessica tries to seduce or heavily imply that accepting her and Paul will afford Stilgar sexual access to Jessica. Stilgar would know she was married in all but law to the Duke, but he would also know that she's a widow now, and thus available to Stilgar. Basically, she's showing a primitive but effective form of affection to lure him in, and with his support their odds of survival increase dramatically. By the time Paul begins to make a name for himself within the tribe the lure is no longer necessary, but when you're in that vulnerable a position, why not use every option? It's dropped fairly quickly in the book, and it's not even brought up in the movie/miniseries that was previous to this.
