    Give it a shot. Remember this is to imitate the Hexa filing. A proper square profile would be a more extreme angle.

    7:40 the reason you can go 45 is because they are compound angles. It's trigonometry. The diagonal of a square with sides length 1 is the square root of 2 - the diagonal of a cube with sides length 1 is the square root of 3. When you have an angle from one perspective, that doesn't mean that is the actual angle being cut into the tooth. All the angles being combined are what lead to the end result. Thanks for a good video, glad I stumbled into your channel.

    Very cool! Could be a silly question, but does the hexagon shape help it cut faster, hold an edge longer or both?

  • @IndianaDoug

    @IndianaDoug

    2 жыл бұрын

    We don’t know for sure yet, but this profile is closer to a square filed profile and square is certainly faster. The Hexa profile isn’t quite as aggressive as square proper. So in theory, Hexa should be more durable.

    It should hold an edge longer. A round filed chain chisel chain has a very fine point, but it's effectively hollow ground, which means the fine edge is not backed up by much, so it will dull more easily than a square filed chain. The Hexa idea seems to be simplifying square grinding so people don't have to think about angles as much. It may add up to something similar, but having such an angle on the side plate will likely be worse off than square file - the chips/sawdust should be carried by the chain, not allowed to escape out the sides. The Hexa file should also be able to be used for square filing since it still includes the 120 degree angles of double bevel and "triangle" files.

    Mr. Doug this is very interesting. The broad file would be versatile for the raker/depth gauges. As to quality files and durability, chain prep is important and you spoke of that. The cleaning of that high quality file is important also. Rust prevention, sweat is a file killer as well. Another file cleaning tip is to back-drag the file through a scotchbrite pad periodically. Was that mouse living in that hollow, or was he just in the neighborhood? I enjoyed this sir....

    What I am wondering is what happened to file quality and durability. Seem the hardness is just lacking from files of years gone by. Even files marked SWISS MADE does not really make a difference. What the hell gives. Does the HEXA sharpen chain really work for hickory wood that is frozen in the woods ?? Seems most videos show cutting solf woods. I am from the northeast woods of Pennsylvania. We mostly have hardwoods to deal with for sure. What can you show us to make cutting tough wood possible with speed cuts too. Look forward to find out the answer Sir DOUG. Peace vf

    I get what your saying, but this video isn’t made to show square filing proper. I’m trying to show how a person can file to get the “HEXA” profile. The HEXA file is to be used like a traditional round file with no extreme angles.
