The method is based on a 45 degree angle between the treetop and eye-line and eye-stump-line. Works as long as you keep the rake vertical.. nice illustration👍🏽

Tools & Timber I was about to explain it, but didnt find the right words and facts. Also I have been questioning myself that is there any rule of thumb how much down or uphill is going to influence.

Arborist_fi , thanks. Your doing just fine. Even if you aim at the treetop from higher or lower elevation and are able maintain the 45 degrees angle, you will have correct measurement and the tree top will land at the mark. The tree will fall on the inclined surface and will be exactly as long as falling on horizontal surface. The error comes in not having the 45 degree angle.

If the rake is vertical, you can get the 45 degree angle only if you're lying on the ground. This particular method is based on similar (not-right) triangles and actually measures the distance from the eye to the bottom of the tree.

Nice practical demonstration - thanks! It's not a bad idea to add your own height to the stick-measured height of the tree, to allow for the fact your eye isn't level with the base of the tree. (In your video, when the felled trees landed, they were both just that bit longer than the stick-measure distance.)

Thanks for your input. You are kind of right, eye is propably not in exact same level with scarf, but in real life it doesnt matter that much. Like in vid, if I would add 1,6m where my eye was, it would land too short. In last clip tree also jumped from stump as much as it went over the wedge.

sped up it sounded like there were 100,000 angry hornets in that fallen tree.

I stand off 90 degrees from the fall line even with the stump. Make a vertical stick equivalent to the tree. Rotate stick to horizontal and sight through the tip to the proposed fall line. Anything between that point and the stump will be under the felled tree.

That works also. If you dont have just one place where to fell the tree. Example between 2 buildings.

Don't worry bout the English . At least you know more than one language unlike many people who only know 1 language . When pointing the rake with your arm are you pointing where the cut is going to be. In other words right at the cut . I know that you are pointing at the cut side but not sure if you are pointing right at the cut line . Thanks

Thank you. Those helmets are Protos from Pfanner. Have been quite good, even wasn´t miracle makers. Good thing I like about is ear muffs that goes inside the helmet. And doesnt get stucked in branches that much.

It depends about the tree, but if it is soft, maybe untill 10cm and if hard, 5cm... If big have to feed it first. I have really liked about that little chipper. Good for our needs. Nowadays we have crane and grapple, so we dont have to chip that much anymore.

Nice!,..simple-i have wondered (and asked others before,..but-) Why are falling cuts (at base) always down low??,.why can’t the saw do all that work up at let’s say waist height instead of bending over down low????,thanks

Height doesnt matter that much if you use timber for firewood. Sometimes we make logs and then it matters. If we are using tree jack (rh-pusher or stalpen) and it is pushing tree with example 3500 kg force then it matters also. The higher you make cuts with tree jack, the less power you will have.

IONI Koitan laitella videoita tiuhempaa. Ajanpuute ja jopa kökköeditoinneissa kulutettu aika vaan ei tahdo välillä riittää. Olin Ausseissa sekäettä-matkalla. Töitä, kollegavierailuja, kisat, hupikiipeilyä ja matkustamista perheen kanssa. Vähä yli 2 kk ja aivan mahtava reissu. Viime talvena oltiin Saksassa, Berliinissä kaverin kanssa kaato- ja hoitohommissa ja se oli myös hieno paikka ja hyvää porukkaa.

I am not sure if I can explain this in english... But let's try. There will be two triangles. First one is from your eye to fist and end of the rake. 90 degrees, 45 degrees and 45 degrees cos you measure the lenght of the rake by putting it next to your eye. Another will be just bigger triangle from eye to hinge and to top... Did I mix your head more? ;)

Arborist_fi Oh my god, I'm so dumb. It just clicked when I read your reply. I was making it way more complicated is my head for some reason. It makes so much sense now. I was treating it like it was magic how your feet would be the marker when you're using your eye, arm and rake, but feet are generally beneath your eye so that makes sense. Lol I feel so stupid. Thanks for replying.

AZ0960440 No worries mate. One thing there is what I can't explain and calculate. Difference if you are standing in same hight than hinge. So your eye will be about 1.5-1.7 m higher than scarf / hinge. I know it is not a big deal and makes no big difference, but just can't figure out that math.

AZ0960440 I have the same tendency. An acquaintance explained 3-phase electric power to me that my research had failed. Ditto "how to tie a bow tie". (The secret is _don't look in the mirror_ while trying the knot but use your memory of tying your shoe. THEN use the mirror to dress / even / adjust the already tied knot)

Hello. I try it short. Two triangles with same angle. Smaller comes from your fist (which points to face cut), top of the rake and your eye. Another comes from face cut, top of the tree and your eye. If end of the rake is not pointing to top, walk forward or backward. No special fancy math.

What I want to know is why in the world are you removing that tree? Was it diseased? It looked really healthy.

Why you need to know that? Because customer wanted. Quite often trees are removed, even those are healthy. Reason can be example building something in there.
