Tom never drank alcohol...hence the comment.."why don't you drink it yourself". I had the pleasure of seeing Tom singing in Slattery's,Capel Street, Dublin in the mid 70's...Used to be a mighty session every Wednesday Night and the man on the door was Kevin Cunniffe (now Borhrán Player & Singer with the Chieftains)

Wow I did not know that!
My grandfather was an Irish immigrant, settling in the northeast of the US. He would tell me Irish folklore as bed time stories, and sing me this song in particular and many others to cheer me up. Hearing this man sing this song brings me to tears. I’m American, I’ve never been to Ireland, but I feel so very at home at the tone and accent of this man’s voice. I pray to whatever gods that may be, that I’m at least half the man my grandfather was, and that my children and grandchildren will love me half as much.

The difference between your grandfather and the immigrants been dumped all over Ireland is your grandfather worked himself to the bone to rear his family,I bet he never had an easy pound put in his pocket,Ireland is over run with scroungers at the minute all wanting to bleed the country dry.

As an Irish man living abroad in Croatia I miss the Irish spirit and joy of a pint and the spontaneous nature of the Irish! the song or session rousing up from nowhere,it’s becoming less common amd videos like this remind me of the beautiful nature and thinking of us all far and wide

I'm living in Liverpool atm and last paddy's day I met another lass from sligo (I'm from wicklow) on the train home and we started a little spontaneous session. I've never been so homesick as when I got off that train to a quiet empty street

Im Australian and we have a drinking culture to rival Ireland but we dont have the same spirit when doing so. Would love to visit a proper Irish pub one day to down a few pints.
I only just heard this for the first time 5 minutes ago but it has me in tears, I feel like I've found some video of long lost family. I will be having a drink tonight

Irish folk music like the spirituals sung by the Africans in America forced to be slaves sings a truly deep song beyond all things surface. The suffering and joy and love of life itself. Find a great recording of "down by the riverside" and tell me it doesn't fill you with the same warmth depth of love that this Irish folk Melody does. The reason is, we are all from the same home. Much love to you my friend

@@handsoffmycactus2958 Pre-gas days I presume where the same pint is being pulled in perpetuity - recycling the foam, letting it settle in the jug, before topping up the next pint, the system works when there's a thirsty drinking crowd swarming for pints (slaughtering bishops)

That word is so important it lives today in Glasgow slang in the Irish communities of Glasgow. For those that don’t know it means home brew. Usually whiskey (uisce beatha (life water)). But can be a general term for moonshine of any sort.

Where I come from, craytur - and I've never thought about how it's spelt, is a person who is deserving of uncritical sympathy because of the sorry miserable state they might be in, be it abject poverty, saddening illness or just crushing loneliness, whatever it is you just feel helplessly sorry for that person "Ah the poor craytur" etc. I still feel it and use this word which I picked up from old aunts or uncles starting in the 60s.. someone who you perceive to be suffering unduly. From Fingal or north county Dublin. I never knew it refers to poteen. (Pucheen)

In case some or you don't realise - he is singing about poteen but they are drinking Guinness. Poteen = Irish moonshine, pronounced " pehcheen "

When I was in High School we'd occassionally have a substitute from Lithuania. She always talked about poteens so we called her the poteen lady.

This is a great performance and a lot of fun. For some reason it reminds of "The Waterford Boys" and if it wasn't for the sound this would look more like a performance of "A Pint Of Plain Is Yer Only Man" for there's hardly a drop of the cratur to be seen.
This is an atmosphere that dosent exist anymore. Before everyone was caught up in everything.

Luddite nonsense, in my opinion. Go to a decent pub on a Friday evening and you'll still find a great atmosphere and honest people content with their pints and each other's company.

I was at that festival...The comment at the end .."No bother to you"....was a great saying at the time in Clare..meant as a compliment...Tom was from a place called Miltown Malbay (north of Kilrush) and passed away in 1990en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Lenihan
