Love these two. I’m always going back and forth between the two, but I’d give the slight edge to Ikaruga. Thanks for the video. Cheers from London.

I think a lot of the "mainstream" appeal of Ikaruga (if you can call it that) comes from the fact that most people see shoot 'em ups as being basically rehashes of the same game (even though in reality there's tons of variety). Ikaruga is really obviously a unique take on the shoot 'em up genre, so people see it as the only original shooter made since whatever shooter they last played (lets assume Raiden or smth). That plus the Treasure factor is the key. It does seem like a pretty well designed game though. I should really get around to playing it one of these days.

Both of these came in the mail a few days ago and I've been watching this replay over and over again before that. They were tougher than I thought but damn they are fun.

The best way to participate is to let us know what game(s) you would be willing to comment on as an "expert." Send an email to stgweekly at gmail.com and it helps if you're a shmups forum member.

radiant backgrounds were done in 2d, but it had perspective tricks that you could do on the saturn (by messing with the scroll registers) also the saturn can run in 2 different definitions, the background is run at a higher def than the sprites and 3d layer... panzer zwei used that same trick...

1:28:13 The Saturn can do 3D just fine. It's just that most programmers couldn't be bothered to utilize both CPUs for 3D gaming. Also, Megaman 8 on the Saturn is identical to the PS1 version but with added content.

RSG in story mode clocked in around an hour and 29 mins so we decided to do Arcade Mode to showcase both.

Support Treasure with any possible releases they have planned for Steam. Bangai-O is just as much of a possibility!

Ikaruga is more accessible but not necessarily easy. Radiant Silvergun is much more difficult but more flexible and rewarding imo. Ikaruga is available on XBLA for around 800 MSP I think and it's also on Gamecube. Prices vary but Amazon usually have a fair amount of copies. There are some differences between versions though. The Stage 3 boss rotates the other direction, the Stage 2 boss can be attacked before he starts his barrage, and a few modes, features and options were cut from XBLA one.

ive officially started my 'training' in getting good at these 2. I look forward to not so much mastering these 2 , but at least become good at them. I have a good 9 or 10 shmups , but none to me compare to these games. I don't know what it is about treasure games , but they are just in a class of their own, and thus their games are highly collectable.

I love Treasure games. How's about STG Weekly do an awesome replay of Silhouette Mirage (Saturn version) and Gunstar Heroes?!

AJ Villanoz That would be more fit for Awesome Game Replays as they aren't technically full blown shmups. More so run'n'guns or platformer. Thanks for the suggestion regardless.

one of the appeals for ikaruga in the west is that it was a "brainy" shooter, westerners look down on shmups as "brain-stem" games, so ikaruga brought in the mammalian brain and thus westerners weren't embarrassed to play it... sadly all good shmups use the full brain, but the perception is that they don't... ikaruga was more widely lauded than RS because of this fact. IMHO.
