Stewed Prunes for Regular People

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Stewed prunes taste terrific and provide fiber and nutrition for a healthy diet. I eat plenty of prunes and I feel…okay. Dried prunes are a nice treat right out of the bag, but stewed prunes are almost like a dessert topping and I enjoy them regularly on cereal and oatmeal. I was born in 1951...prunes and raisins were staples in the house for snacks. Stewed prunes were just tasty. I still have prunes and raisins for snacks.....Thanks for the video, Buck!

When I’m looking up a recipe for stewed prunes, I don’t expect laughter. So imagine my surprise and delight to find this funny video that doesn’t take itself too seriously but offers serious recommendations for stewing prunes. Thanks!

The title made me laugh. Thanks Buck. My mom would tell me when she was a kid everybody was poor. She remembers eating a lot of stewed prunes and homemade noodles. She said my grandmother would make the noodles and cut them out and dry them on the back of a chair that was covered with a piece of newspaper. I like prunes. They're just plums and plums are about the best fruit you can eat. I love those big cans of purple plums in heavy syrup. When I worked on an oil tanker one time I used to order them for breakfast every morning with eggs and grits and kippered fish. One day the mess man who was serving us told me to stop ordering the purple plums because he said the cans were rusting and I was the only one eating them and the chief cook would not throw them out so long as I continue to eat them. In order to get unemployment when you got off a ship, you had to have a medical reason for leaving the ship. A shipmate told me to eat one of the seeds from the plums and swallow it and when I went to the doctor to tell them I had a stomach ache and if they did an x-ray it would show up as an ulcer. Like a dummy, I swallowed a seed and went to the doctor who never asked me anything and just signed a paper that let me claim I was sick so I could get my unemployment. As far as I know, the seed is still in me. But yeah, purple plums are pretty good. So are pruned Danish. I have never thought about using prunes as a chick magnet as you have done so successfully. Since I drive a 94 Corolla I never felt it necessary.

ba-dump! I'm pretty sure an old clunky car is no chick magnet. CG and I are on opposite poles when it comes to cars. She'd gladly opt for a fancy car, but to me that's the biggest waste of money...and the upkeep on a nice car only prolongs the waste. Many years ago when we were shopping for a "new to us" car, I lobbied hard for a Yaris, but CG wanted a Camry...we met in the middle with a Corolla, then about 8 years later that corolla got totaled and we went and bought a used Yaris....so dreams do come true :^) I hope 10 years from now I'm still seeing new vids about your 94 Corolla--I bet you can do it!

I remember my parents kept a jar of stewed prunes, but they were closer to whole fruit than your "pulled prunes" like yours. They were kept in an old GLASS mayonaise jar. I thought it was hilarious when a few years ago, the prune cartel decided it wanted to update its image and they started calling them dried plums. The ever youthful grapes did not have the P.R. stigma of prunes and did not have to do a reboot as 'dried grapes'. On a somewhat unrelated tangent, I would often enjoy a good prude danish. I was once it the town of Solvag, CA, which originated as a Danish settlement. Of course, the town was full of smorgasbord restaurants and bakeries. Seeing every kind of Dasnish pastry you could imagine, I was dumfounded as the why they did not have prune. The person helping me retorted rather sternly "That's not Danish, that's German!"

I did not find stewed prunes to be such a well known solution to a well known problem. A bit of diligent searching though found "soft-dried prunes" and I knew my goal was near. Thanks for the laughs, CB & CG! That was one of your best (and funniest) videos. I bet your prune mash would be deeeeelish spread on French toast, or as a filling for crepes. Or a sauce for roast pork tenderloin. My great grandmother (yes!) used to make "cooked fruit" with packaged mixed dried fruit (dried prunes, apricots, pears, apples). She just soaked the dried fruit in a jar with hot water. Made a very yummy dessert. By the time you become adept at using that space-age stove, you'll be leaving for the next house sit. Just part of Murphy's Law for travelers.

I've looked into making kefir, but we travel around so much, I think I'll wait until we've settle down before I get into homemade kefir...the kitchen we're using now is at another house sit...it is a pretty and polished kitchen space, but I think I'm too lazy for a big kitchen. I've worked in a lot of restaurants over the years, and in my experience, a restaurant kitchen is usually a tiny, cramped affair, but many of the kitchens we encounter on our housesits are ridiculously large.

I do love prunes, but have to be very careful with them. A ghastly episode with devils on horseback has taught me to be wary. Prunes are a variety of plum, not necessarily dried. So when I harvest them fresh from the tree, I preserve them in glass jars, hence I "bottle" them, which to you would be "canning" prunes. But I use sugar syrup, cinnamon and a few cloves. The result is truly heavenly, especially with a dollop of creme fraiche (has probiotics too but more sumptuous than kefir).

I usually stew up a pound bag and then store it in the fridge in a sealed container after they've cooled down...I've probably kept them in the fridge as long as 10 days, although I generally finish eating a batch in about a week (I eat them on my own, 'cause CG isn't crazy about prunes)
