Welcome to the Martial Arts Journey KZread channel!
My name is Rokas. I'm a Lithuanian guy who trained Aikido for 14 years, 7 of them running a professional Aikido Dojo until eventually I realized that Aikido does not live up to what it promises.
Lead by this realization I decided to make a daring step to close my Aikido Dojo and move to Portland, Oregon for six months to start training MMA at the famous Straight Blast Gym Headquarters under head coach Matt Thornton.
After six months intensive training I had my first amateur MMA fight after which I moved back to Lithuania. During all of this time I am documenting my experience through my KZread channel called "Martial Arts Journey".
Now I am slowly setting up plans to continue training MMA under quality guidance and getting ready for my next MMA fight as I further document and share my journey and discoveries.

Pulling off these techniques in a bjj scenario where instead of forward and back pressure, both are trying to go to the ground, is quite a feat. Shows good understanding of the techniques. So, kudos!

@@ektran4205 Yes? They’re all grappling and have origins with classical jujutsu and sumo, that being said how they are used and applied are different. Sumo for example is very much all about getting the opponent out the ring or touch the floor with something other than the soles of their feet, so it’s a lot of constant pushing and pulling. In this scenario you actually see a lot of aikido principles and similar techniques be practically applied. Judo and BJJ are a bit more complex since there is aspects of a ground game which was not a thing for the others so the way they are played is different (more so BJJ) because you can’t just constantly push/pull someone or have them fall to their knees or automatically win. Since the dynamic is different, applied something meant for a different scenario is far harder

Finally I've found either real martial artists or very educated people on KZread. Ppl try to say aikido has no practical applications but it shows it does somewhat. Of course not everything is going to work but wouldnt that be with any art?

@@TheOneSymphony You're too kind! Yeah you're right, there is of course practical applications to any martial arts, the problem is people trying to use one size fits all answers to things instead of thinking of their contextual usage. For example, if you want to see aikido used perfectly in action, look at sumo! Sumo is one of the oldest and core japanese martial arts and ancestor for many others (especially the grappling arts like judo and by extension, bjj). No one would ever say sumo is unpractical, and yet in sumo you see an application of aikido techniques. Search up "Sumo and Daito ryu techniques" and you can see this in practice. It's all about the context, and furthermore, Aikido is historically trained as a final art to achieve mastery, as in, once you're experienced in other hard grappling arts is when you can start learning and truly apply aikido. Starting aikido first without any prior background is where many fall short.

That is why you learn MMA before you learn aikido. You don't just force techniques. You apply them when the opportunity presents itself. It is the same in all martial arts.

It's called counter strike. Attack base on opponent position, reaction, behavior, whatever. But there's a potential danger if you practice this, the teachers would send athletes(their students) to spar with you. Be like water is you follow opponent energy direction, not fight using opposite direction. The danger is not many people could imagine it, when you answer their question. They need to see it happen in a sparring(in a fight), even then they can't believe what they saw, a retreat person suddenly wins or man handled pulled foward - no resistance, suddenly wins.

What people don’t seem to understand is that Aikdo isn’t an art where you shake hands then the get into a sparring position to grapple. It’s for when people are coming at you full force with an attack. Hence the Seagal clips in the video where people are doing just that. The more energy in the attack, the better Aikdo works. If you want to stand and spar with an opponent you do BJJ, boxing, Muay Thai, etc. But that’s not to say Aikdo can’t be offensive, especially at higher ranks and years of practice. There also is free form training at least in the better aikido dojos.

As much as I dislike Aikido, this is one glaring flaw I always notice with folks who spar with MMA guys or whatever as evidence that it doesn't work: Aikido is about using your opponent's momentum against them, so it's not designed to work against deliberation and moderation in action. Though I doubt it's effectiveness against street dudes who throw wild haymakers and bum rush, I've yet to see anyone test it that way.

Aikido is to grab and keep your opponent off balanced in fighting form. Kotegashi how I heard it explained that it does not always work well when your enemy tries to punch, more so when your enemy has a sharp object like a knife or blade. Enemy charging you with a knife since the direction of the enemy is charging you. You use the enemies engergy against them.

I think the major issue and problem with is video and method is 'You don't just force techniques' and grappling and standing still is not how a lot of the technique work and here is your extension. This is too fun watching and the whole session is bad and Aikido is not a fighting. You need to work a bit more and all aspect of Aikido training and you do not look for a fight plus your gym testing was bad because your stance and distance is not Aikido. What about being attack by a weapon/pool table stick, BLENDING with the flight of the stick, air cartwheeling the attacker while both of us are holding stick, and walk away leaving him wondering. Your need more training not stage a scene and learning to flow with the attack.

Seagal uses SFS not Aikido in the movies. Too much impact. You lack of strength and have weaker impacts. It's not about the technique. It's about how much power you gonna put in the technique. How fast you gonna perform the technique. If you are fast enough oponent will most likely not have the time to react.

Seagal learnt real Aikido. We can see from his movies, those are no BS Aikido.

@@kenirawadi4689segal does know and mainly uses aikido in movies yes. but he also does legitimately know traditional jujitsu. which is very much related to aikido/judo. watch his episode with Jesse and his brother, everything he demonstrates/explains to them is jujitsu, and very legit teaching at the least, he's old and in bad shape now so this isn't a conversation about what he can or can't do, but what he knows and demonstrates are legit techniques.

He’s rolling with white belts who he’s not trying to injure. Ripping wrist locks against white belts is pretty poor taste.

@@willtherealrustyschacklefo3812 I agree. His technique is legit. Of course in movies they made them looked more artistic. But almost all matrial arts movies have to prioritize the look over efficiency.

@@CaPnBaLlBaG Rokas did not have good Aikido teachers. It seems many traditional MA clubs, even the masters have no idea what should they do in real fight especially when fighting ppl outside their dicipline. It is important to be aware but not to disrespect them. I learn from those masters their tecnique and I fill the gaps from somewhere else.

It doesn't seem true to me that you even make videos in which you so serenely reveal your ignorance... Now, without even wanting to defend Seagal, are there perhaps techniques in the world that work against a sparring who is already aware of the technique you would like to perform ? Be kind, take off the hakama and wear the beginner's belt, as you still have a lot to learn about Aikido. 😒

Lack of judgment and knowledge of Martial arts, first, when you apply a technique on the street your opponent does not know what technique you are going to apply, therefore surprise is a resource as well, second, most of the time your opponents do not know self-defense or knowledge of martial arts is null, third, a Self-Defense connoisseur will know when to apply their knowledge and skills, so there are many factors that can help you and be useful when using them.
