Steven Adler VS Guns N' Roses lawsuit April 1993 news report

April 1993 cable TV news report on the lawsuit between Guns N' Roses and their former drummer Steven Adler, who claimed his share of the group's finances amounted to five to ten million dollars, including court footage of Adler pleading his case and of Slash testifying about why Adler was fired. The BetaGems channel also has "Traci Lords & GN'R 9-7-88 accept Best New Artist Award," "Axl Rose Gets Punked...," "Guns N' Roses 9-7-88 TV award show performance," "Slash's Snakepit 4-14-95 late night TV performance," "Iggy Pop with Guns N' Roses duo & Steve Stevens 3-5-95 Vegas," "Seal and Billy Idol with Guns N' Roses duo 3-5-95 Vegas," "Slash 3-15-95 late night TV performance," "Slash & Boz Scaggs 9-2-95 TV performance," "Bo Diddley & BB King with Guns N' Roses trio & Steve Stevens 3-5-95 Vegas," and "Guns N' Roses Paris rehearsals 6-5-92."
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on KZread or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.

That wasn't the issue, Gnr managed to keep themselves at least in good shape to record. Adler at this time was showing up late, or when he did show up he would be to loaded to play the tracks. Slash and Duff even went to his house to try and straighten him out. Whats the point of a drummer if he cant even play on the album.

I'm a big fan of Steven Adler. But I know Steven didn't get kicked out for doing drugs. He got kicked out for his behavior while on drugs. If Steven was able to continue to function semi normally, I'm pretty sure he'd have been ok for the time being. But different people cope differently to addiction and unfortunately for Steven, he was no longer able to do his job. If this were some part time local band, that might have been ok. But for a band that was starting to sell out stadium concerts months (even a year) ahead, they couldn't work with someone who couldn't get their shit together. The same thing would have happened if Steven wasn't able to function for any other reason. Every member of that band suffered in some way or another due to drug or alcohol addiction (except maybe Axl but even then, I don't know) - Steven was just the first.

I love Steve's drumming on Appetite, it's pretty much perfection for that kind of music and his style is surprisingly hard to replicate. That said, to me it really felt like the band could have overcome his loss. it was Izzy's leaving that really marked it's downfall. He was the filter for Axl's madness, the one person who could talk sense in to him when Slash and Duff couldn't get through. Also GnR's style of music changed drastically from Appetite to UYI. Stadium rock anthems are not Adler's groove, he's a LA club metal guy, and a damned good one. This was just as much of a reason for his firing as the drugs were. They wanted to enter the big time with Illusion, but Adler wasn't in the right state for that ride. I think they did him dirty no matter the reason. If they wanted him out that's fine, but they should have at least cut him loose with what he rightfully earned without him having to take them to court.

Axl gets the biggest blame for taking over and ruining the band, but I place a lot of blame on both Duff and Slash for having the personalities to stand up to Axl, but both were too far gone in their addictions to actually do anything about it. I read his book. I enjoy biographies, particular rockstar bios. He was a mess, but man I really felt for him. And i think he was correct. What is missed in all of this was, he became a heroin addict in part because of the bands heroin use. Really, directly related. Axl was clean, but the rest of the band was right there with him doing drugs. So in essence, G&R caused him to become addicted to drugs, and then G&R tried to cut him out for being addicted....while they were addicted too. I partied back in my day. Not heroin, but any of us who have, know that all members in your partying group take turns pushing each other. Get this, do that, lets do that, can you find some? Now I have some. etc. What the band did was slightly clean up before him, leaving the poor guy behind, severely addicted. And in that moment while he was wasted, and they only slightly were better, made a power move. I felt they were so damn hypocritical. Like he was a POS, and they were saints. Nah...they went for it. tried to cut him out of the money because they saw him as too messed up to realize it. His mom really stepped up and looked out for him. They sent the same guy trying to help them to go to him to sign the agreement.

Out of all the guys in the band I would’ve never expected Slash to sell out on his Steven his literal vest friend😔 Dont get me wrong this man is MY IDOL, he’s literally the reason I even considered picking up a guitar in the first place, but I can’t stand with Saul on this one... He sold Steven out! The only reason why they kicked him out of the band was because his drug use was effecting the way he played, but Slash shouldn’t sit there & act oblivious considering the fact that he was most likely still on heroin at this time too! The only difference between Slash & Stevens drug addiction was that Slash was still able to play while high & Steven literally couldn’t... idk man I’m just saying maybe Slash should’ve tried a little more to help his “best friend” it just seems crazy that him and the band ganged up on Steven & kicked him out for something that mostly everyone in that band partaken in. Sad.🤧

Actually it does make sense he didn’t even know what the heck he was signing if he was on heroine. (The other bandmates said he was always using so when he signed he must’ve been flying) Who would sign it if you knew you would get fired? They couldn’t fire him if he refused to sign, so it does make sense that he was claiming the contract was null and void 🎸🎸 just by him not having legal counsel when signing is very sneaky and probably on purpose. for everyone saying slash shouldn’t have sold steven out, you have to think of this scenario in his point of view. slash was literally watching his best friend fall deeper and deeper, taking so many drugs he’s on the verge of killing himself. it was probably hard for him to watch steve go through that. slash definitely didn’t want to lose steve because that was obviously his best friend, someone whom he cared about deeply. when it came to court, you think slash would cover for steve just so he could stay in the band and fall even deeper? slash wanted steven to better himself, so he wouldn’t lose him. slash “sold” steven out so steven would finally understand and try to get sober. if slash hadn’t told the truth, stevie probably wouldn’t be here today. think about that.

I remember when this happened. Slash and Izzy were using Heroin as well, Duff used to drink a lot and later on, he found out that if he snorted some Cocaine, that helped him to sober up, so that he could drink even more without passing out...but I don't know when he started to use Cocaine. Anyway... I've heard/read about how they went to a studio to start recording the drum parts on the Illusion albums and how Steven took forever just to record the drums for Civil War but was this the real or the only reason why they kicked him out? The reason (or one of the reasons) why Steven was kicked out was because Axl couldn't stand him. Apparently, Axl's wife or girlfriend back then, Erin Everly, she was partying with Steven and at some point, she took a little too much Heroin and passed out. Steven had the brilliant idea to inject her with some Cocaine, hoping this would wake her up... This is what Axl claimed in some interview, that Steven almost killed her and since then, he couldn't stand him. Of course, I wasn't there, this is what Axl claimed but it wouldn't surprise me and this would explain why he hated Steven so much and why Steven was kicked out when both Slash and Izzy were also using smack.

The firing was justified with or without the contract. I think they should have re-hired him if he got himself cleaned up, because he did have a feel that was hard to replicate. I think the only thing we know is that they become a non original band after 2 album. Two big ones to. Then EGO'S became bigger then the band. And I think it's still there. " EGO'S." Not playing with izzy and Steven. There still alive. So they should be playing on "not in this lifetime tour." They should be calling it ." Steve was fired because - well the real reason was he tried to fix some heroin for Erin Everly and I’m good friends with the ones who tried to get her heart beating again so at least from their first hand story it seems he was fired for messing with Erin - Axl was major pissed.

hypocrites all of em. Slash was a junkie early on with heroine and coke till the end, the others were alchoholics and cocaine addicts, Axl was smoking weed like normal person breathes air to keep himself sedated and they pointed their finger on Adler... great bunch

Snaking his royalties is what that corporate rock band was up to. They aren't pirates ask Izzy. That's why he quit. "All of those songs on appetite to illusions were wrote around Adler's groove. Just listen to Mr. Brownstone" -Izzy

I love Axl so much but being so hypocritical to kick Popcorn out for being addicted when Duff and Slash were addicted too is just pathetic.

Hey liked him at the beginning, the problem came around when Steven started to play while also fucked up. So around that time they had a band meeting and they decided to clean up their act. Guns n roses would be "sober" when they recorded and played live gigs. I mean they still abused drugs and booze, but steven would show up high and wouldn't be able to lay down the tracks for the album. Which if I'm not mistaken was the first use your illusion album. Also steven got into some business with some bad people and slash and duff would try to help him but would find heroin in his house. Eventually they knew that they couldn't really help him.
