Paul is the ultimate shredder no doubt with a lot of soul in his playing, but Steve has written some of the most memorable material of this music genre!

With Jimi the music flowed out of his soul though Steve & Paul might be technically better.

I’ve always loved Steve. For years easily called Steve my “favorite” but damn, Paul just has this ability to keep it feeling so fresh and new. Maybe I have a new favorite.

@@JaredGrissett I saw both Steve and Paul last year within 3 weeks of each other. While Paul is my all time favourite guitarist and my biggest inspiration, he has definitely slowed down a touch. He’s still godly, but I noticed in particular Down to Mexico, Scarified and Technical Difficulties were slowed down. Vai on the other hand, sounded just as good as he did on the records. Don’t get me wrong, Paul is still ridiculously fast and soooo musical, but I think if we’re talking now relative to their peaks, I think Vai is still closer to his form from the 80s and 90s

Much as I love Steve Vai, I'm starting to believe Paul Gilbert could blow him away any time he wanted.

I was never a Vai fan, but that son of a bitch is good! I liked him with Snake. I have always liked Paul… but there is NO WAY in hell I would say Vai is better. Simply not true!! Both masters at the craft!!!

As a guitar player? Perhaps. Paul Gilbert is a monster. But as a composer? He can't tie Vai's shoe laces....

@@Geetar48 vai's compositions are not great. the clout to get orchestras playing his music and the ability to read music doesn't translate to much beyond amateur orchestration and unformed ideas

@@Geetar48 you got it backward actually, as a guitar player. They're both awesome in different ways. Definitely Gilbert is more melodic and I think he's stronger at Improv, while Vai is more a technical guitarist.

I honestly think the total opposite, it's too muddy, soft and smooth for his playing, doesn't compliment it at all.

Paul is a standout musician 1st who can shreddd harddd too.he has a teachers soul,very positive fellow from what I have seen.refreshing and just be so good.he truly gets it.thanks for being Paul!

Great to see Vai hitting some blues phrased licks like he means it. Gilbert awesome job as usual. Well done guys. Jimi loved jamming... you guys had fun in his spirit and nailed it.

Paul playing soooo cleanly without the over distorted and compressed sound Vai has. Unbelievably tough to pull off yet PG does it so seemindly effortlessly.

Absolutely, Paul's playing is immaculate. But while his tone is pretty simple and clean, it doesn't sound very good to me in his last years. It's too muddy and soft for his playing.

Two legends, love the musical chemistry here! Their tones actually complemented each other well here, Paul's woodier and less sizzle, and Steve's all gained out and spicy in the highs.

Me too, dude! I was watching mr big touring in 93 yesterday and kept imagining if that era's Paul were to play on a G3 with Satch and Vai!
