I've read the same thing. But if it's him playing in this video (not a camera trick or double) and he doesn't deliberately play bad according to the script, he's nowhere near good to be in the NBA or any other professional basketball. No size, no shooting, no jumping, just some ball handling. As a naive kid at the time, he must have been believing that he was that good. EDIT: I seem to have ignored that he might have later grown in height as an adult and also improved his passing, shooting, jumping.

I recently rewatched a bunch of early Urkel. That guy's physical performance as a kid was stellar. The way he could walk through a set and crash into things making it look accidental was incredible.

If you watch the Family Matters Entertainment Weekly reunion clips and read the magazine, Jaleel mentions there was a basketball hoop on set, and also he did play in a few celebrity hoop games during his time on the show too. Moves like what he did in this clip and the Grandmama episode take a lot of practice and skill.

I had this episode on tape many years ago in the 90s. It was a tearjerker and was very uplifting. I'm so glad to have had this episode on tape while it lasted. Still lifts my spirits up today.

My favorite spectator was the little Granny. She was so cute. My least favorite was that snotty, snooty head cheerleader! I admire Laura for taking a stand and introducing that new cheer on her own

Jaleel White was a real athlete and basketball player/fan. That's how he had handles. He even said it in the EW reunion. But even back then, I could tell he played.

I remember an interview a long time ago when he was on Dancing With the Stars he's a very good dancer he's got allowed Talent he's one of a kind he said that I'll I quote he always be Steve Urkel and I bet any lot of money he misses playing Steve Urkel he said he'll always be Steve Urkel but people knowing him as one-of-a-kind on Family Matters and other things he's doing but he's a wonderful talented young man and one of my favorite actors always

He is one of the greatest actors of our generation, no doubt. Urkel was a difficult role because he wasn’t just a funny nerd, he was also a sad neglected kid who covered up that pain with a lot of heart and spunk. Jaleel was perfect, no one could have done it but him!

I know Laura's cheer from heart. Love this episode

Seriously, urkel was inspiring for my generation honestly he was, carl winslow well unfortunately typecasted as a cop seriously but gotta love it, hes in die hard, and almost everything as a cop but its one of those people who plays it well, Myra will be missed

I loved that part. She had no idea how to cope with being unpopular & rejected, yet Steve knew the feelings of being treated badly constantly & he wouldn't give up. I have to say Laura had to also love his determination & perseverance along with other qualities she loved about him.
