This week Steve Reviews takes a look at the Isle of Dogs. A dark yet qwerky film produced by Wes Anserson, also knows for his Fantastic Mr Fox in 2009. But is this film the dog's b*llocks, or is it rather a big pile of rubbish....

The sneeze isn't just for comedic affect. It's something dogs actually do. They sneeze, or "snuff" as it's often called, to break tension and tell other dogs "hey, I'm just playing," or "hey, this situation is kinda tense and it doesn't have to be." I have no reason to point this out. I just kind of thought that was neat and wanted to share.

I really like how the language barrier is purposefully used in this film. The entire film is mostly told through the dogs perspectives, who obviously can't understand human speech. We as the audience don't get subtitles because the dogs don't get them either. I also find it interesting that the foriegn exchange student, who is constantly championing the dogs cause, speaks english almost exclusively despite knowing Japanese. She is literally speaking the dogs language.

The reason the 4 dogs kinda give themselves to Atari is b/c they were all originally 'house dogs' & in the beginning of the film they talked about how they wanted to just quit, they were pets, they're not used to being dirty, eating garbage, & fighting other dogs on a daily basis. Plus, they all speak highly of the 'masters' & would want nothing more than to return to their original comfy life style. So, to me, it makes sense why they all become so obedient when Atari 'takes control' of the pack.

15:46 I don’t really see this as her being shown to be fluent in Japanese. It just shows her being able to have this exchange, which seems to be a common exchange she has with the people she stays with. You can know certain phrases in other languages while still having so little knowledge as to find it easier to use your native language.

Atari couldn't understand the dogs, except for Spots or Chief when they're wearing the headset. When the dog was yelling for him to land, it's assumed that he's being barked at. Seeing how calm the dogs were the whole time, you'd assume something went wrong if they're chasing him barking.

I liked Tracy’s character, although I feel like she could’ve been written a tad bit better (don’t harass me, I still love this movie!) 1. Why didn’t we get more backstory/backbone about Tracy? She just kinda comes out of nowhere, even though she’s important to the ending plot, I would still appreciate a little more story on her. 2. Like he said, why didn’t the female scientist take the antidote herself to prove it? Sure, Tracy is apart of the “Pro-dog,” group, but why didn’t the female scientist just get the job done herself? I know she was absolutely devastated after the death of the other scientist (who I ultimately forgot the name of :/,) but still. And finally, 3. How how how did she fall for Atari that easily- I don’t think they had any screen time together when she found out about him on the news, and before Atari had actually gotten back to island.

Personally, while I thought this movie was grotesque and strange, I found it more enjoyable than any Disney movie I'd seen since 2007. Because it was able to be so straight up and out there with it's message and wasn't afraid to show some blood, it made it more interesting to watch. A majority of movies I see now all follow the same.. Rules. Kid's film? No death. No blood. Certainly no broken bones. Adult action film? Explosions. Car chases. Guns. Adult.. Sexy film? Sex. Sex. Cocaine. Sex. Drugs. More sex. This being aimed towards kids and having the BALLS to show us dead animals, blood, fighting.. The works? It makes it a hidden gem in my book. Yes, some parts were silly or stupid. But it IS still intended to be a kid's movie. This is more like the movies I remember watching when I was LITTLE. I'm talking The Last Unicorn and that one My Little Pony movie where sentient purple sludge tried to suffocate a bunch of pastel talking horses and some little kids. To me, the movie was good. Why? Because even though it was aimed at kids, it didn't treat kids like they're stupid and throw a bunch of glitter and pop songs in their face. It was good. A good movie, about a bunch of good boys and girls.

However, this one and those weren't. They're worthy of all praise and awards they recieve. They don't rely on pop songs and a bunch of glitter to keep your kids focused, they focus on telling a story to them, and it's up to your kids on whether or not they listen. I like that in a film.

Wes Anderson's style is purposely very theatrical. It takes some getting used to, but I'm absolutely in love with the method. It constantly reminds you this is a movie. He likes showing the strings and zippers behind his special effects. he announces comedically small time jumps like the audience hasn't gotten used to cut to sequence editing yet. The characters look at the camera like they're trying to gauge the audience's reaction. His love stories tend to be more emotional slapstick than anything else. It'll be something like Owen Wilson says "I think I've loved you my whole life", and Gwynith Paltrow says "But I'm married to your brother. Isn't that wrong?" What he sees as weaknesses are its strong points to me. I also think the great thing about the American is that she's very American. We intervene. We stick our nose in everyone's business. Meaning the exchange student comes off as very brave, very heroic, very condescending, and very tone deaf all at the same time. I saw that and I'm like "yep, those are my people" XD.

My favorite scenes in the movie were - the sushi scene - the lab tests scene - when the activist found the lab assistant (shouting at her)

One scene that will always stick out to me from this film is “my friends think I like to fight, but it’s just not true.. sometimes I’ll loose my temper and blow of a little steam but I’m not a violent dog… I don’t know why I bite-“

Hey Steve, recently found your channel and love your reviews. Well thought out and spoken, and tackle a lot of interesting themes. I might suggest you take a look at “The Animal Train” I think it’s done by a creator you’ve looked at before. Cute film from my childhood but I recall it having some real dark undertones. Anyways great review!

Throwing out a recommendation again: Ginga Densetsu Weed! Lots of plot, lots of characters, mostly good animation, and l o t s of death. Like. At least one named character dies in each episode.

I might be biased since I grew up with it, but might be better to start with Ginga Nagareboshi Gin. I just feel like Weed is more impactful if you know why the old the characters and fight with the bears mattered as much they did
