Steve Perry - You Better Wait (Official Video - 1994)

Музыка

You Better Wait is a song by Steve Perry (‪@journey‬ lead singer 1977-98) from his 2nd solo studio album, For the Love of Strange Medicine (July 13, 1994). This ballad was released as the first single from the album on June 28, 1994, while its music video was filmed in late August of the same year in the Grand Canyon area.
The city is a magnet, and kids gravitate toward it because they can finally leave the nest. The only problem is sometimes you can get lost on the streets, and when young people get lost on the streets they sometimes don't get back. That's what this song is about. - SP

Can't get enough of listening to it Steve Perry is the "voice"..When I first heard this I thought it was Journey, Steve's original band. However, I believe, from this song, that this band Steve put together is equally as good, if not better than his original Journey band Steve fronted for years to major success.

Great stuff from this "Strange Medicine band", as Steve himself liked to call them, indeed, both on their only studio album _(I Am, Stand Up Before It's Too Late...)_ and live. Not to the point of dethroning Journey in my eyes though, especially with all the ups and downs he went through with that band, and the musical excellence of each of the members - Neal, Gregg, Steve Smith among others - who made it up over the years (at least from the 70s to the 90s, over the period Steve was involved), but one of my eternal regrets is that Steve didn't revive this 2nd band in 1998, after his definitive departure from Journey and "while the iron was hot"... A few years ago, Lincoln Brewster brought out his _surf green_ guitar from those years, announcing that he was still in touch with Steve, but nothing has come of it musically... yet?

I don't know, but you'll find in the description how Steve himself presented his song: _"The city is a magnet, and kids gravitate toward it because they can finally leave the nest. The only problem is sometimes you can get lost on the streets, and when young people get lost on the streets they sometimes don't get back. That's what this song is about."_ Personally, although Steve has never confirmed it, I think this song refers to his / one of his girlfriends in the 90's, at the time of this album's production, who had been a glamour model in her youth. I should point out, however, that although she was much younger than him, she was far from 17 at the time of their relationship, unlike the character in the song. Anyway, what you mention reminds me of a testimony Steve shared in an interview with Kate Mossman for the New Statesman in 2018: _"People don’t become performers because they don’t have needs. Singing, though it can be very lovely, is essentially a primal scream. And I was screaming pretty loudly - and quite big. [...] There was a lot going on but nowhere to take it. Things happened to me as a child that I still can’t talk about - nothing to do with my parents, but things did happen. It happened to a lot of kids, as I find out. [I was] about nine. But there was nowhere to take that stuff back then. One of my needs to perform was the need to get myself heard. Now, please, do understand, I’m not complaining - but there was nowhere to talk it out, so I got to sing it out instead."_ In 2019, during his Big Interview with Dan Rather, he specified: _"From a public standpoint, the best word I can come up with is "a violation". And it changed my life, tremendously, to the point I couldn't even access the idea or talk about it till I got older. [...] There was nowhere to take it, Dan: [...] you stuff it, you shut up, you move on."_

@@michaelmichalesko8910 You're very welcome and I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to you in your youth. I hope you were able to start over and that the truth has since come to light. I haven't personally been the victim of such serious acts, and imagine it's easier to write than to live, but as with any form of injustice, the shame must change sides: it's the aggressors who must be blamed, not their victims! Regarding the song's subject now, to be quite honest, it raises questions in me: that a narrator (who we imagine to be the 45-year-old Steve Perry performing this song) wants to get a 17-year-old girl out of the clutches of _streetwalking,_ or at least prevent her from falling into it, is quite laudable, but to make her understand that _"somewhere there's love"_ by calling her _"a child", "precious girl"_ or _"baby"_ throughout seems to me at best clumsy, at worst problematic. This young girl could be his own daughter, but nothing in the text resolves this ambiguity, quite the contrary... I don't know what you think, or if you share this feeling? 🤷‍♂ That said, if you haven't already watched it, I highly recommend Steve's 43-minute *_Big Interview with Dan Rather_* I mentioned earlier, viewable for free on AXSTV.
