I was there, standing in first row close to Rod Morgenstein, this drummer from outer space... That was a great concert, not easy to play music, but - as you can see in this footage - they played this stuff seemingly completely effortless, which was very impressive to a young guy that I was then! The audience was made up of 10% bassists, 20% drummers and the rest were guitarists: Gibson-Shirts everywhere as well as Fender, Ibanez, Marshall, Mesa Boogie-Shirts... (I was wearing a Paiste-shirt, of course ;-)) Believe me, not a single one was there because of the music itself, all of us just wanted to see how these guys on stage would do it. Maybe some (or many) went home and sold their instruments on the next day... :D

Yep, A lot of us, after listening to this band, considered going home, and cutting up our gear for firewood. The riffs, the progressions & their style!!

I was there ... will never forget this concert and the introduction tour. I have seen them in Frankfurt, Cologne and Munich

Bought "The Introduction" in college--wore it out too. Awesome to see this short-lived trio blow everything that came out in '84 to smithereens. Props!

i bought that album because the credits listed allan holdsworth, but when i listened to the album, he wasn't on there. in an interview morse discusses the misattribution, i forgot what happened, but it was still a good album, not sure how allan would've fit in there with its country leanings

Unbelievably cool footage. I ran out and bought this record after hearing "Cruise Missile" on WKLS in Atlanta when I was 14 or 15 years old. Definitely one of the bands that changed my life forever!

That’s some in-your-face playing. Up front, bold and accurate.

I and a dear friend (Rest in Peace, LC) saw this tour in Dallas, TX at Tango, in 1983 I believe. Allan Holdsworth was to open. He was touring in support of I.O.U., but was having trouble getting out of Houston because of Hurricane Alicia. LC was in the record distribution business at the time & we had been invited to meet the band. As a guitarist, who also played a Telecaster (1970 Blonde Custom for you players and guitar geeks) I was a huge fan of both Steve & Allan. We went back stage, to meet the band. Steve greeted LC and I with a friendly, inviting grin, and we engaged in small talk. Steve is about as down-to-earth guy as I have ever met. The first thing he said was, “Nice to meet you guys and thanks for coming out to see us play!” We three talked for probably 5-7 minutes and all the while Steve was warming up…doing his runs, triplets, arpeggios and parts of songs. I was blown away! Here he was, talking with us and playing astonishing riffs, at the same time! Simply insane, that his muscle memory was so well practiced, that speaking with us was just another meet & greet conversation! We said our goodbyes, wished him and the band a great set and returned to our seats. Allan and his band did show up later on and played his set after Steve and his band played their set.they were so good, as evidenced by these 2 videos. We couldn’t hang around for Allan’s set, as it was a work day the next. Sadly it was my one time to meet Holdsworth, because I discovered his playing on Jean Luc Ponty’s ‘Enigmatic Ocean’ and of course UK’s eponymous album. I had seen that tour and was massively blown away with that show! Anyway, fantastic memories. I have been very fortunate to meet many of my favorite musicians in my life, as a freelance music writer. But this night has stuck in my mind for good reason. God bless you all, Rest in Peace Allan and Steve, I hope your health issues will get sorted soon and in a good way! 🎸🎸

Ya know, Steve plays "Steve Morse" music man guitars and Engel amps now but nothing beats this sound, his Frankenstein tele and whatever he was using for amps back then nothing beats this tone, he had an Imistakeable tone all his own back then and I don't think his new tone touches it.

Steve is using Ampeg V4 amps here... as he did throughout the Dixie Dregs era. Jerry is also using Ampeg amps... you can see a wall of Ampegs behind them in various shots here.

I've been waiting about 27 years for a video of the '84(The Introduction)tour, so Thankyou for posting this!! Morse using his Ampeg amps and Frankenstein axe from which he had a very unique awesome tone back then in my humble opinion are still the best. What a treat and a Huge inspiration seeing them on this '84 tour it was...and still is!!

Saw this tour in Atlanta, at the Moonshadow Saloon.....mind blowing.

Songs: Refried Funky Chicken; On the Pipe. Ends with the 1st half of Pride Of the Farm. Awesome playing, and Steve is using his Franken-Tele, yay! I would love to hear this concert in its entirety .

Finally the "Introduction Tour" ..... yay, Uncle Steves been part of my musical family since the mid 70's so it's great to see kids today just salivate over him, gotta lubs it

I wonder how many would be guitar gods hung it up after hearing Steve play for the first time?

I had a clinic with Steve and another with Rod...most beautyfull encounters in my life...and i have the pictures in my lounge!!

Just saw deep purple and I can tell the arthritis is hampering his amazing skills. But it's still Steve Morse

Saw this exact concert at the rainbow music hall that year in Denver Co. Totally molded the way I looked at guitar playing.

Wow what an awesome blast from the past. Steve still playing the "Frankenstein" guitar and Jerry Peek on bass! LOL, roughly around the time of that video, give or take a couple years, I took a few guitar lessons with a girl who was Jerry Peek's girlfriend at the time. Thanks a bunch for putting up the videos. The quality may not be superb, but the content sure is to me.

Those were some kind of fun daze, man! I will never forget.

I saw this line up in a small club in Nyack , NY . We all piled into a car and drove up from Long Island . Jerry Peek had the original aluminum cone speakers by Guild BEFORE Sampson / Hartke purchased them . And the Guild Pilot bass - same as he plays here . Steve was using the Franken Tele / Strat - Telecaster with a Strat neck and numerous mods .

yeah what a treat huh? Morses awesome unique early Tone and with jerry peek too. wish there was more fooage of the Dregs. on this tour they also did a Dregs medley that was great.

.. Gerry. he makes me think of a happy little kid playing in the mud. 🌠

He sounded so much better using power amp tube distortion, as opposed to pre amp tube distortion, which is what he uses now. Started when he switched to Peavey. Same goes for EVH.

I love the tones that Steve Morse gets out of that Frankentele and his amp setup...It stacks to anything today, probably better but harder to set up....

saw this tour at the berverly theatre awsome! jeff berlin opened the show ..steves the king

i get that his signature guitar is designed to be all things for all styles of music, but SM on a telecaster, sounds SO much better to me. yes, this is uber modded in his fashion, but there's just something about the connected solidarity and immediate punch of a T-style guitar, even modified, that brings music alive.

I couldn't agree more, I guess this old girl became unplayable but I think it would have been so cool to have had Fender do a SM signature Tele and make him a new playable Frankentele ! Although he worked with Ernie Ball to get the same functionality out of his MM signature I feel very strongly that the only SM signature model guitar that should exist should be a replica of this Telecaster to exact spec's now...... "How cool would that be" ? Thinking about it now I'm really shocked that never happened!

@@adamrafferty now that you mention it, yes! I saw the Morse trio at the Bottom Line on that same tour. I remember they played some riff-driven Dregs song and at some point it morphed into Let’s Go Crazy by Prince. Morse and Peek did a little jump, like Prince and band did in the video. Fun stuff.

It’s a television multi-camera broadcast. The director picks the shots and directs the vision mixer to cut to them. The camera operators offer up the shots, but the final cut is at the director’s discretion. Let’s stop blaming the camera ops!

Tell you what: you've got to give the Purple music more listens until the appreciation sets in -- I had "Purpendicular" many years before I started really loving it. I'm still not a huge fan of the last 3 albums, but they'll probably grow on me too eventually. It's not Dregs or SMB, but Steve adapts to the circumstances and puts his mark on the music regardless of style. And hey, if you still can't get into it, that's cool too.

Morse would have fit in and worked much better if he went with a strat sound. The fat 80s tones dont work for the classic purple stuff.

I know Steve and Rod, but ... Who the hell is the bass player? Damn, he kicks major ass! Remember, folks, this is from 1984 and they played so tight and ahead of its time.

Yes, he does! He is Jerry Peek. Check out Steve Morse band's -The Introduction- and -Stand up- albums. They are full of great bass lines and chops.

Two fifths of the Dregs, taking nothing from Van Romane or Dave Larue both monster musician's but there was special about the first formation with Rod and Jerry. Not sure if I'm remembering this right but I think Jerry became a car salesman! I just can't get over how someone that talented that was in a band with one of the greatest guitarists on the planet would end up in such a profession and not be playing music unless there's a dabilitating health reason involved or something? It's a shame

Marije Essink I've seen a few concert recordings on here and dailymotion from around '84-'90 that are credited to RTL (Jaco, Zappa and Miles) so this could be the same sort of thing.

This particular recording was made by a private production company for "fun" and for the "Fachblatt Musikmagazin".. The producer never got any payment for that. It was recorded on Umatc Low-Band analogue, with 4 diferent cameras (JVC, Hitachi, Ikegami and Sony) Sound recording wa made with a genuine Soundcraft S 200 24 Ch without later remix. The venue was the refitted (not even finished) "Alter Wartesaal" Cologne, recently bought by Alfred Biolek, a german TV host and tv producer. Unfortunately, due to the time and circumstances the original tapes are lost. :-((((

That's Jerry Peek and I'd never heard of him until I bought "The Introduction" when it came out in the 80's, not sure what became of him or why he ended up leaving but he's a great bass player!

Steve's August '82 Guitar Player cover was my intro to this guy, after reading about him I bought Industry Standard (released earlier that year) and I've been hooked ever since. I will say I've spent absolutely no time with his work with Kansas or Deep Purple - for me he's one of those players (like Jeff Beck, like John Petrucci) where I just can't stand vocal interruptions of his/their flow.

steve need not switch to another guitar. .tele should have been his signature guitar. .morgie. .havin' a good time on drums.

Dear God Rod is from 3 planets away.

Why is that when I listen to Steve there’s always a couple of “WTF?!” moments?
