I didn't realize I was an audiophile until I realized I spend almost every waking moment thinking of ways to improve my system and am willing to forgo new clothes or fixing things that need fixing around my house in order to buy more audiophile equipment.

Thank you Steve! You reminded me that I used to be a 17 year old audiophile. I drove myself crazy tracking down the problems with my system, until I reached a vanishing point where I couldn't tell if it was me or my system. At that level of critical listening I realized that any change could make a difference. Cables, amps, speakers, cartridges, tone arms, and on and on and on down the rat hole. It's just like being a wine connoisseur. At first it all tastes the same but as you focus on it, your palette becomes refined, educated, enlightened! And then one day I looked the other way and when I got around to looking back (30 years later) the hobby was filled with quite a few pompous, insufferable snobs. A wire with gain wasn't good enough. Everybody had a superior opinion and equipment prices were through the roof. I looked away again and when I got around to looking back again, I ran right into your video. It's good to hear what you have to say and I'm glad to see someone like you spearheading the hobby. It gives me hope for the next generation of audiophile gearheads.

I love listening to you talk about music and audio gear. Your passion and enthusiasm is contagious. Back in 1987 when I was 11, the vinyl section at the store near my childhood home wasn't very big but at some point I could no longer walk past the records without stopping. Shortly thereafter that curiosity pushed me to make a move. My first record was Motley Crue's "Shout at the Devil". Soon after that my dad noticed I was started to get into music so he brought out all of his old Sansui audio gear so I could actually listen to my sole LP. While I was sorting through boxes and crates my dad brought out of storage, I discovered a black box with what looked like crocodile skin on the outside and a zipper. I opened up the case to discover a red velvety lined case filled with Led Zepplin albums on cassette tape. The cassette tapes themselves were different colors, which I don't think I had ever seen before that day. My dad handed me some huge white over-the-ear headphones and I listened for hours and hours. I think that was the first time in my life when I could begin to appreciate how art, music, and gear are connected.

Steve, I believe we are in a Golden Age of Hi-Fi. The bottom end of Hi-Fidelity is so darn good. The source can even be free - your laptop. Japanese integrated amplifiers and others such as NAD - I could live with. And we are spoiled for choice for with 'budget' speakers, such as the Elacs you mention. Thanks for introduction and a thumbs up from me.

Hi Steve, You summed up who I am pretty well with your description of an audiophile. I love music and I love gear. Two parallel interests that are individual yet related. The thing about ''loving sounds'' is truly what separates me from my non-audiophile music loving buddies. On the other hand I loathe the whole audiophile ritual of setting up ridiculously expensive gear and sitting stiff as a board in the sweet spot listening to typical audiophile drivel. I think that's what differentiates me from the stereotypical audiophile. The type of gear that gets me exited is honest unpretentious gear that delivers true musical emotion with hopefully original design to match vs an audio altar loaded with gold plated, zircon encrusted status symbols that leave you wondering what the fuss is about. At the same time I'm always digging for that buried musical treasure that's will surprise me with it's original and refreshing sound.

Audiophilia is not just the love of music or the love of sound; it is also the love of gadgets and the mechanical and aesthetic aspects of delivering sound.

Eric Morrison The older you get the worst your ears get period. A lot of these reviewers don't have decent power supplies in their homes, so it's not clean. The environment is bollocks too. So many reflections. I purchased a Simaudio moon 850d for the sound, a so called expert from stereophile said the pre amp is dead quiet...which it isn't.

Actually, I've been in 2 reviewers homes, and they both had very good power conditioners in their systems. As far as ones ears getting worse with age, while that is true, in many cases it does not seem to be as big a detriment as you'd think. Most of the hearing loss is above 10K (I'm 60 and my hearing is good out to about 14K), but the vast majority of music is below 10K. The decibel scale is logarithmic, after all. But even for those who can only hear to 10K. Despite not hearing high frequencies as well as they once did, they are still able to hear: dynamics, micro-dynamics, distortion, clarity of the signal, imaging, transparency, time smear, etc.

I just realized I'm an audiophile. Where you talk about how something sounds; I listen for those details like the sound of an amplifier or the position of where a Stratocaster pickup selector switch is set. All that matters to me and you helped me to see that. Thank you...

My first experience was 1975, when my cousin played a turntable. I deny nothing and you hit this right on the head and what I'm proud of the most, is you are not ashamed in any way to say that it's about everything, the equipment the sound, everything. I bought my first system at 18 and have been hooked every since. The music thru the system should transport you almost to another place. I enjoy your reviews and I have followed you for a long time. It's always good to see you speak about our passion, thanks!!!

Steve: Nice to see you out there again. I was a colleague of yours in the 80s when we worked for Andy Singer (shudder), me for a very short time. I remember you being very sincere in your approach to customers. In fact (I'm paraphrasing here) I overheard Andy saying that you weren't a typical salesman, that you really believed what you were saying. In that instance I think he was being honest. I've read your reviews over the years and have always trusted that, even if I didn't agree, I would look again with your opinions in mind. It IS about the gear, not only how it sounds but how it looks and how it makes you feel regardless of the music you're playing. Aesthetics count in a big way for audiophiles. As Steve said, some deny it, but it's the truth. For audiophiles, the gear is beautiful industrial art.

Best comment I ever had from an audiophile was when I asked my local audiophile store what the difference between high end audio cable and studio cable was (much cheaper) . The response they gave me was " When did anyone in a studio ever know what they were doing ? " ...er...like when they made albums you listen to ? A friend of mine who is a sound engineer once tested ordinary electrical cable against '£50 high end audio cable and found the high end audio cable had such a high resistance the volume dropped by a few db whilst the ordinary electrical cable performed was much better. The world of Audiophile is a nest of snake oil salesmen.

Sure, but there is also a lot of great equipment that far exceeds the rubbish you find at big box electronic stores. You just have to know how to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I hate it when people associated audiophile with someone who spends a lot of money on audio equipment. An audiophile is someone who spends a lot of time exploring and adjusting audio equipment to find what sounds best to them. Some have a bigger budget but you don't need that to find what's best for you. I've had a lot of amplifiers and speakers before i had my current setup and i'm still not pleased and i will find the ideal combination for me one day. I've listened to setups that costed 10 times what mine costed but i didn't think it sounded better. A lot of people often just buy the most expensive equipment because they assume it sounds the best and companies take advantage of that by making basic audio gear, using expensive materials and saying scientific bullshit about it so you would actually spend 1000$ on a cable

The search for the holy grail of audio never ends. But that's part of the fun. Life is about the journey, not necessarily goals met.

Thank GOD someone gets it. I played a lot of music on my 70's gear but when my system could reproduce a bass drum that had the same impact and emotional, visceral feeling that a real bass drum did in the same room, It changed how much I loved listening to music. I am proud of my gear even when it isn't on. I like the look of peoples faces when they see my 4 monoblocks and don't know what to say and then they hear a violin sonata at medium volume with all that gear.(they expect I am going to blast them) Usually their wives get it after the second track and say something like "Oh I could get used to this!" AND I say "It's better with a glass of wine" and there hooked. The husband is now thinking how he is going to pay for what might be his new hobby!

Wall of sound by Phil Spector? That sounding dire. I think it was because he was always on drugs. Paul McCartney accused him or ruining a Beatles album, he was right. Lennon too was always on drugs. I think this is why Lennon liked Phil Spector. When I was an Audiophile it wasn't about the gear, it was about the sound quality. How clean, detailed and authentic the sound was. The truth is on run of the mill stereo's your not hearing the music properly it is all distorted. Those who become audiophiles will notice that they now like some songs they never used to like before, because when you can hear them properly they are much better.

Audiophile since my first Kenner close n play circa 1970. Driving my parents crazy for taking apart all the stereos they bought me growing up.

We have followed a similar path. I was always a musician but when I was 11 my cousin who was 7 years older built his first pair of speakers to best the advents he owned. I was hooked. My first stereo was a pioneer SX1010 receiver with 4 AR-6 speakers and I never stopped. I have been designing and building speakers for 43 years now. I now own custom loudspeakers and some great gear. The big question is who do we leave our gear to when we go?

Nice video! I am proud to admit that I am an audiophile. For me, that means the equipment and how it sounds is very important to me. While the music comes first, I love to hear great equipment. The vast majority of the time I listen to my system, I ignore the equipment, and concentrate almost exclusively the music. But there are times, where I get no better joy than changing out a piece of equipment, or some other change to my system, to hear the differences the change makes.

I just wanted to say that I'm hundred per cent in agreement with Steve asseverations that we audiophiles, especially males, whom are fascinated with the gear itself and the sound being as a mean of judging them, of course, we love music, but we want to look at and posses something to be proud of. For the other hand, Steve is right when he says that never the entry level inexpensive gear, has never sound so good, I'm in awe with my last purchase, and unprepossing an inexpensive Yamaha CD-NT670 sistem, first intended as an auxiliary lifestyle sistem for background music, sounding hi-end level in a company of a TAOC FC-3000 bookshelf loudspeakers costing ten times its price.

Though I won't disagree with you, E James, because I really wouldn't know, there's one thing I can tell you; My girlfriends were way, way quicker at getting used to good sound and then not being able to get back from there than I ever was. I have an amazing memory for sound which is actually useful, but it took me years to upgrade by the by. When I recently tried out a pair of Blumenhofer Fun 13 speakers in my livingroom, my girlfriend yelled down the hall 'the detail is amazing compared to your speakers I like them!'. The wasn't even anywhere near the room where the speakers were, but she was spot on. I ended up not buying them by the way, problems with room acoustics and low ends. Blah.

I'm an audiophile: I'm an active musician, and I have cared about sound most of my life. The most important component of being an audiophile, is simply to care deeply about sound, and to focus on THAT. Focusing on the gear as a boastful purchase minus the personal focus and deep listening behind it in my opinion isn't being an audiophile. Just like in the musician world- those people are simply GEAR OR EQUIPMENT COLLECTORS.

Everyone can be an audiophile, but not everyone can really feel the music! I know many audiophiles, but only few of them understand the music.

I was the same way. At a very young age I was concerned about sound quality. My father was the same way. My brother on the other hand, was happy with a little transistor radio. I was 8 years old when I got my first component stereo. The guy at the stereo store said are you sure you want to get this for him. We do carry a child's record player. I remember my father got mad at him because he tried to push a less expensive stereo system.

I am an audiophile. It's a lot about the equipment for sure. It's not always about what music is playing, but how well it's playing. I also find that people like to act like the only thing that matters is the sound. (Yet they buy B&W's because of that damn tweeter pod on top, haha) Gear can be beautiful or prestigious as well, and that's also a perfectly valid reason for owning it. But if it isn't the best bang for the buck audio-wise, it's a failure to some. Since when did it have to only be about value, leaving aesthetics, craftsmanship and pride of ownership out. Essentially every audio review states just that. "Outperforming speakers even two-times their price..." etc. Outside of this hobby the most vigilant group of critics are the cable naysayers. Some of them believe that nothing makes a difference except the speakers. Some of them even think amps and preamps are all the same too. They aren't IN the hobby, but they make it their mission to destroy anyone who is IN the hobby. Very strange. I've been selling audio professionally for 14 years, and listening for a lot longer than that now and I still love it. P.S. My dad had that same Jukebox...Interesting.

I have come to notice that I am an audiophile too, I just love sound and the way it works and sounds, such a very interesting topic and conversation,. I am still learning & trying to get my songs/instrumentals to sound as best as they can, I hope to work with analogue equipment such as Eqs, compressors and a mixing desk one day, to really hear the difference it can make to my music. one song I am really proud of is “Finding Meaning” feel free to have a listen anyone and would love to hear what any of your feedback is 🙏🏼

Great memories there Steve, the dye was cast. These days product quality and accessibility have never been better in terms of cost and quality which lays the groundwork for the hobby to thrive into the future. Recycling of disposable gear needs to be firmly embraced by the industry as well.

I've had a few accidental experiences (Simplest way of explaining one of them; not knowing anything had changed and noticing it rightaway when coming into a recordstore) and honestly, I just try everything before I judge because I heard some downright voodoo work wonders, even with very mediocre audio.

So I walked into my local record store, completely unprepared, going through the records, not paying attention to the sound quality (A simple JVC amplifier and B&O Redline speakers hanging on the wall in a far from audiophile set-up) when I notice that it sounds much, much better. I asked the guy behind the counter, who had not said a thing yet, if they had a new amplifier or something. He then tells me a couple of days prior an audiophile dude came by and asked if he could demonstrate something. He took this weird ointment, put tiny bits on the CD shelfs behind the counter and that's all he did. I asked the record store owner many times if that is literally ALL he did. And he went 'yes, after that he had coffee and we talked about music'. The record store owner, he's called Rino by the way, thought he'd also noticed a difference but he thought he was going mad and really wanted to know what I thought, so he purposefully did not tell me. I was completely unprepared in any way, had no idea that guy with the ointment would visit, it wasn't even music I knew that was playing. If the book you suggest can explain this in any other way than that it actually seems to be working amazingly well, then I'll gladly read the book. A friend of mine suggested it was the record store owner's entusiasm to tell me that would have come to me, telephatically. But before he knew I was in the store (he was in the kitchen at that time), I already heard the difference. You could also figure that's telepathy because he "felt" I was there. But though I believe in telepathy to a certain extent, I don't really think this is how it works :D. If you have any doubts about this story, the recordstore is called MusicMachine and it's in the Dutch town of Sittard. I can get you another example if you want to, where the difference of a 'voodoo tweak' was visualized by the vibration of the speaker grille, making it even harder to deny. The thing is though, these tweaks were actually mounted around the speaker cables so I guess that's a little less voodoo than the weird ointments.

I hear you...the way recordings are made today (processed) is like eating processed food or Monsanto food rather than natural earth grown food.

It was interesting to find Stereo jukeboxes being advertised in late 50's Billboard Magazine.But, Steve makes a good point. When some compare LP vs CD, but it's best to compare acoustic instruments, little "electric", because most people know what an acoustic guitar sounds like. Personally, I'm not sure what an "audiophile" is, like "oldies", a term used, but no real definition.

If you have not done so already, I hope you treat yourself to the experience of designing and building some of your own gear of your dream design.

actually an interesting thing about link wray's 'distorted' guitar ... i'm writing an article on this - actually - you HAVE heard that sound before - but you weren't able to identify it - it's the sound of gunfire and fighter planes ...it was only natural that those sounds entered the vocabulary after WW2 ...

I use a cheap system: old Anthony Gallo A'Diva speakers (not the TI), two old ridiculously cheap Highland Audio Dord 265 subwoofers, an old Integra TX-DS989 (pretty decent internal DAC) as amplification, an old Wadia 171i Transport for a prehistoric iPod Classic 160 as "server" alternating with a fabulous new Wyred4Sound bLINK (500 dollars) for an IPAD Pro as Deezer music server. Mainly classical / jazz (ALAC ripped albums saved on iPod) and streaming from a Deezer Premium account. No audiophile ambition, never. Music lover? YES. Always. I am pretty certain that music sounds really nice and I can compare with very expensive systems I had the opportunity to listen to over the years in some "audiophile" homes (a rich acquaintance of mine owns some very expensive system (all Krell) and Focal Sopra speakers). But I have fabulous soundstage, great contour and clean jitter-free music.My listening area is an equilateral triangle (3m sides). No need to spend a fortune for enjoying good music, I'm pretty sure my music sounds great, as it was intended to sound.

Still using my Wadia 171i Transport and iPod 160. Still sounds terrific and you can't beat it for the money as a music server.

and this is why I love Vinyl and tube audio.. I can see the tonearm lower onto the record, I can watch the record spin. I sit and watch the warm glow of the tubes.. I envision the electrons moving across the tube elements. Sometimes I take my speaker grills off and watch the cones on my 15" Altec 604c speakers moving with the music. I also rebuild and restore my own equipment and with Tube audio you can roll tubes to experiment and produce different results. Some good, some not so good. To my tastes, SS technology sounds fantastic in many cases, but it is so cold. I agree that I love music, but I love music and bands that are engineered well and SOUND great. It's not as much about the content of the song, but more the quality of the recording. Many of my favorite 70's rock bands actually sound like shit when played back on a really high end system.

My definition is rather short (from experience). If you listen to your equipment rather than the beauty of the music, then you are an audiophile. It is an addiction for too many people.

Wonderful aspects, but I would be careful if the device had 'interesting' sound. Sometimes interesting sound can be painful after few weeks. I really like systems with 'nothing special, but quite natural' sound. I accept that this guy has plenty of experience and he could easily detect the tiring sound, but I am just an amateur and I recommend the other amateurs to be a bit careful.

I guess the first person never heard of UPS or line conditioning? I can understand wanting quality, and your own circuit, but the idea that you need your own circuit to get ideal power is ludicrous. There are far more affordable ways (like good UPS') to achieve the same goal.

Hi Steve, I have found my speakers and they are Polks SDA SRS 1.2. IMHO they are the best speakers with super soundstage. My audio journey still strong today which began when I was 7.

Oh Lord the amount they will spend on their setup and still using a turntable!!! I've never heard a record that sounded better than a CD or high quality mp3. It always seems like cassette quality at best. Crackles and pops and I don't hear warmth but warble. The loudness war is the biggest problem in today's music but having the same music on vinyl won't correct the problem.

Isn't there laws for that.

Come on Steve, hifi enthusiasts buy good equipment to play their library of music and hear the music. The audiophile only listen to the sounds the music makes on their equipment and makes a list of music that makes the equipment sound it's best. I am not an audiophile no matter how expensive equipment I buy. It comes down to how well my music sounds to my ears, and my library doesn't have special passages to emphasize my equipment.

Thinks $20,000 cables make a difference and wears a #resist button. Sounds about right.

I spent 20 years, starting in graduate school, recording live music groups - chamber music and orchestras, mostly. My aim in listening to recorded music has always been "How much like a real orchestra does the recording sound? I have a pair of $300 monitor speakers, a good computer audio interface (out of a number I auditioned to see what kind of "veil" they put over the sound). Had the system for 15 years and it sounds real to me. Am I an audiophile?

I would say yes. I also come from playing classical music and was always interested in the same thing - having it sound up close like from within the orchestra, and thus hearing the fine details, feeling the strings vibrations etc. It's like Steve says, about the sound, not just the melody or rythm.

Back when I worked in stereo stores I used to get a feeling of a certain sickness when I heard things wrong with a system. I got to be known for having ears. To this day even though I haven't heard much lately I can still hear differences. I heard a expensive power cord on a system and I couldn't believe how it made the sound stage so big and I heard sounds behind me. My system consists of tube and transistor equipment and electrostatic speakers. Conventional speakers now sound very distorted to me in comparison but i still like playing with them.I once compared my system to live unamplified classical music and the sound was the same. I felt I had reached a point where I no longer needed to upgrade my system.I bought this system in 1980 and have had to do changes and upgrades to keep it working but its still mostly the same.I have heard much more expensive systems but they didn't sound better to me.

You're only as good as your weakest link.

Have you seen the measurably horrible distortion that Schitt DAC's output that have been measured put out? It's the antithesis of any of the DAC's used in music production. Agreed there are a lot of good, affordable, pieces out there.

Have you heard a Schiit Multibit DAC? Did you read the review about how it sounded in Stereophile and Absolute Sound? I can tell you there is no horrible distortion. Just incredibly natural sound with excellent technicalities. Love how the digital glare or digititus is gone. Your statement is not accurate and if it were accurate you would be focusing on something that did not impact the sound. I saw some strange anomalies in the Chord Dave measurements as well. Again in that case it means nothing of real substance.

The rare record collectors who have amazing records also seem to have the worst toy like record players.Really expensive hi fi set ups are owned by people who have the most pedestrian music tastes.Just my experience.

I'm really glad I'm not an audiophile, cos first - I'm a cheapskate, second I just listen to the MUSIC not the sound or blank spaces.
