Anyway, I'm not sold on Tre yet, but I think he is also posturing saying "ya know, I'd prefer to keep Mitch..." so that when he deals him he can be seen as someone who was basically forced to trade him. But Leafs fans, we need to consider how it will feel if this is another Matthew Tkachuk situation, where we deal Mitch for a couple decent players and Mitch goes on to win a Cup with new team. Leafs issue is their D core. Probably bottom 10 in the league. You can’t have such a weak defense and expect to win championships. You also can’t win without superstar/hall of fame level talent, which the leafs already have. They need 2-3 additions to their D core, and more stability in net…. and a coach that doesn’t use sporadic trial and error during games in attempt to fix things.

I mean how can you make the argument it's not an acceptable answer? Mitch has full control. If Mitch says no you literally can't so what are you talking about? If the player doesn't want to go he has that power and there's literally nothing you can do about it. You can play him 4th line minutes with no bodies to try to make him change his mind. That hurts the team probably more than it hurts him. I bet he'd still be super effective when he was on the ice. And in the meantime all your stars are going to see how you treat this player who did nothing wrong. All the perspective guys you want to entice to come and play for you in free agency are going to see it too. You think that's something you want to do? It'd require being pretty stupid.

@@csolivais1979 US federal + most average states is, I believe, still less than Canadian tax rates. Not the big advantage that Florida or Texas have, but still probably enough to show an effect. One idea I've had to negate the "tax advantage" of some cities would be to calculate the cap after taxes. E.g. Player A plays in Bigtropolis and is on a $5M/yr contract, and in Bigtropolis that means he pays roughly a 40% tax rate; Player B plays in Mediumville and is on a $4.3M contract, and in Mediumville that puts him at around a 30% tax rate. Both would then only count as $3M AAV for cap purposes, as both players would receive roughly $3M after taxes. Teams in higher-taxed cities already have to spend a bit more as it is, but with this method it wouldn't affect their cap calculation, and it wouldn't be as big a factor in players choosing where to play since they would see the same after-tax income.

If Steve keeps “arizona”ing every time the mere mention of marner comes up, sdpn is gonna lose tons of listeners. It makes the pod unlistenable when the main guy is acting like a child; I get he’s passionate but it also isn’t entertaining.

Mitch is a fan favorite and has averaged 100 points for 4 seasons in a row in 82 game season. He’s the Leafs’ leading scorer in playoffs for the last few years. He elevates his game when the stakes are highest. He makes players around him play better. His market value is around 14-15M but he loves Toronto and wants to stay and win the Stanley Cup for the Leafs so he’d settle for a only 12,9M and leave money on the table to use to sign quality depth players to fill the roster. The Leafs would be crazy to not accept it.

  • @HardwoodFloorRefinishing101

The wisest moves for MLSE will transpire as follows: Have Marner play out his contract and not resign him - it doesn't matter if they get nothing for him in a trade this year, his contract will be off the books, they would have paid him anyway. Players on their final year of expiring contracts play harder. Once Draisaitl is available end of next year they should put the best offer forward to acquire his superior PLAYOFFS services. The current highest paid player on the Leafs couldn't care less about winning in the playoffs - he's not going to risk injury, or sacrifice long term future pain to do whatever it takes to win, it also cuts into his down time back home in Arizona (chilling on the yacht with Bieber and his friends). 34 wouldn't sign for eight years because he wants to keep his options open, so four years is all he gave us. If the Leafs wimp out again in next years playoffs then get rid of Prima Donna Matthews and go after a player that will sacrifice his own well being to win. When McDavid comes available the following year it's incumbent on MLSE to bring him home - If Lebron can go home to Cleveland, McDavid can come home to Toronto - his career is finite, and too short. Who cares if Matthews scores 80 regular season goals. If he can't dominate in the playoffs we don't need him. He'll be more than happy to go play in La La land. Then take the 13.25M he's getting and use it to bring in McDavid for 15M. Of course those in charge of hockey operations only view 34 as a merchandise revenue generator for MLSE - they too don't care if the Leafs win in the playoffs - they'll still make their millions in salary, and don't have the balls, or are willing to follow through with what's best for building a playoff competitive team..Bowmanville Dave

I was thinking maybe we should look at trading nylander but he has a no movement clause too. Although 11.5 mil for what nylander brings and we have him until he's 36 probably going to be a sweet deal down the road the more you think about it. Damn I wish we could keep all three.

Look I know some people think it would be better to let this player walk than keep him. And maybe you are right. I just think that is the worst scenario for the club. Trade first, resign if you have to BUT do so with minimal protection. And make marner out to be the guy who left. Offer him a very fair deal but don’t include the no move or any of that to give yourself the option to continue to trade the player down the road. If marner walks then, so be it. But option one here still needs to be seeing if a move can be made

Again, anyone that still thinks this team needs to run it back again, executives or fans, doesn't want a winning team. They want a regular season team that puts up meaningless numbers that have no impact on the league and that loses in the first round like they were never there once they face a real team with actual structure that can't be solved by just riding the mediocre high end talent to victory like you can in an 82 game regular season. They should've broken this up after the Montreal series, but they stubbornly stuck with it and all they did was lower the ceiling of the team. They still have 1 second round game win and 1 loss to an AHL Zamboni driver that worked for them with this core. Until that changes, the decision is still the same: Break the core up. If you don't want them to, you don't want a winning team, which is a sad place to be in as a fan or an employee of a team whose last conference final appearance is old enough to drink in the US and is probably older than some of the fans defending the team's mediocre core and older than some of the prospects or players on this actual team.

Toronto's biggest problem is they give away NTC's like its candy. Why did JT get one... he did absolutely nothing in his career to deserve it. He was suppose to be the "My Captain, oh my Captain!!" leader... but has never led his team to anything. Teams need to put a $$$$ value on NTC's. 25-45% to evoke an NTC... to make it so that you can buy out a mistake... so that an NTC like JT doesnt cripple your team because of the CAP... what about making an NTC based on playoff performance?? Then you can trade AM34 immediately!!! The M&M situation... that is a Leaf problem they knew about and didnt address. (its funny they hard stanced Nylander... the chillest of all of them... but give into AM34 & M&M on their RFA)
