Steve Albini - Self-written Eulogy Hidden in TapeOp Book II
From Tape Op The Book Volume 2. This is a summary, and I struggled with this, as I didn't want to censor his words, but also felt that reframing his words into a eulogy was sort of derivative work.

Shocked to hear Steve Albini had passed away- 61 is too young. Seemed a forthright dude, not afraid to stand by his opinions!

As someone who knew his stance on experimental, untested medications, his passing wasnt a shock at all. I am shocked that more people arent talking about how CRAZY it is for a non smoker to die of a heart attack at 61

He sold himself to corrupt medical companies and corrupt government and paid in full. Sad and ironic.

This got me a little teary eyed. I have a theory though, it's kind of a no-brainer, but mourning people we don't know can be largely about addressing our own mortality....and I turned 60 this week. My dad made it to 98 and died in his sleep, still had is brain and wasn't in a lot of pain right up to the end. #Goals
Thank you and thanks Albini!
This was my favorite dude on so many levels. I hope everyone is aware that he taught all of us everything, for free, it's all out there. A lifetime of studio knowledge. I had never read this piece. A truly beautiful tribute. Thank you.

Dude was the most generous person in all of music. He went out of his way to help anyone who asked. James Murphy wrote to him as a kid asking for his advice and Steve responded with piles of letters and faxes describing every aspect about building a studio. And that's just one of many stories. I will miss him so much.
Thank you for sharing that tribute to a true genius. He is already missed.
Beautiful and brilliant. Steve was the real deal. True artist and genuine human being. Thanks for this.
A great tribute.
He was so transparent in how he did things. When I was starting to take recording more seriously it was his lectures and interviews I read the most. He had such a thorough way of explaining how he did things as opposed to other books/people. He really wanted the art of recording to grow. And thats just him as an engineer. Who he was as a person and and artist were also inspiring. I could talk for days about him RIP too soon.
Steve Albini was a massive influence over my life without even knowing it at first, with the music he was involved with and later his ubiquitous presence online, with his generous insights into recording, engineering and the music business. It was a genuine gut punch when I saw the news. In the spirit of his message here, I am going to put my unreleased demo of my song called 'The Middle' (which is oddly about what he is talking about here ) on soundcloud right now! The world will miss your presence.
He was honestly one of the most insightful and genius people we’ve had in music period. His attention to everything around him was staggering
An unintentionally beautiful eulogy
Thanks so much Steve. Never met the man but I feel like a lost a friend. God has a very special angel today.
Good God, haven't cried that good & hard in a while... A friend worked at electrical, thank you for this
My love for Albini started with the first spin of a Big Black album. I bought Songs About F***ing, and wore it out. That whole scene was new, violently original, and Steve was at the heart of it. I lost touch with his work until relatively recently, when I got back into recording and performing. It was reassuring that he was still in it, and still carrying that attitude that I loved forward. This world needs a reaction to today’s antiseptic, manufactured noise, made with as much effort as choosing a font. Steve’s lingering influence will be a force that helps make that happen, I am sure.

Very insightful and thanks for sharing some details.
I'm a horn player and we just loss David Sanborn so this is like being hit in the solar plexus, twice. RIP
This was lovely, thank you.
Delighted to hear from you. Albini has also inspired me from a distance since I started recording more than 25 years ago. First because of the connection with Nirvana and then directly with his own career. RIP Steve, greetings from Argentina and I hope you can upload videos more frequently again, since they were some of the best on KZread in terms of audio engineering.

Thank you Ryan, heartshaking reading and beautiful tribute to one of the most inspiring engineer ever.
I didn't know Steve, but now I wish I had ! There are too few who really get it and I appreciate it when I see/hear it . Truth is forever .... I'm still trying to get over the loss of Clarence White R.I.P Steve ... say Hi to Clarence for me
This was amazing. There is no later.

Perfect. That is a perfect tribute
Man, words of wisdom for sure!
He was/is The Man. Godspeed ya Steve!
I’ve thought of this piece probably once a day everyday inthe decade+ since I bought the book. I actually pulled the pages out of my book and scanned it to post on twitter. One of my favorite pieces ever written. Thanks for reading this. Requiescat 🎈

That’s pretty cool. I obviously skipped over a bunch of it but still was torn that I was censoring him.
One of my favs
I’ve been reading Rick Rubin’s book and it is so good I’ve decided to grab a pencil to underline parts. Maybe marking these words will make me not ever forget this. To never let go of what truly matters. Funny enough, here comes this beautiful video. Timing? Ryan (and Steve), thank you for this! Thank you, really! 🤍

Sorry for unsolicited advice, but if you really want to remember them, don’t bother with the underlining, it’s busywork that merely makes us feel like we’re learning. The real trick is to wait about 15 minutes and write down everything you remember about what you read, then reread it after the frustration of not remembering things. One works, the other doesn’t; I can pull up the research papers on this stuff if you want.

@@crow-dont-knowi find it just helps to read stuff over and over until you memorize it. I read everything many times
@crow-dont-know
2 ай бұрын
@@Ottophil That can work, but isn’t very efficient. Also, it’s nice to reread content you enjoy, but not everything we want to learn is enjoyable to read multiple times; I wouldn’t have wanted to constantly reread my course content back when I was in school. Also, I’ve seen research that says repeated rereading creates familiarity with a text - a sense that you understand and of remembering it - but doesn’t actually improve recall significantly, at least when compared to testing.

If I make it to 61......wait, let me rephrase that, if there was any chance I would make it to 61, I would hope I could continue learning and growing with every passing day.

Thank you for reading and posting his Eulogy and keep getting surprised

Legend💔
It’s been nice to eulogize with his devotees. Stand up dude who gave us a lot to think about and someone to say “well that’s cool, I DO know that”. I still got Chomsky and Rollins and a few other hero’s left. But we all get some time, and these dudes did the best shit with theirs.

For those into Nirvana and Steve's contribution to Nirvana... Check on Conan interviewing Dave, Krist and Steve. The phone pranks are awesome. Steve doing Kurt while Kurt was setting next to him in the studio 😂. Some others as well 🤠 Steve Albini 👌
