Where is the damned ship? Mental hospital? Why is it nighttime?
Stage directors are running out of ideas for presenting these ancient Operas anew. What we need today is Opera composers who will write beautiful, listenable Operas with decent tonal music and decent arias for all and also great, beautiful ensembles. Then all this nonsense of "rethinking" old, geriatric Operas will not be needed because new Operas will be big world hits. Opera composers of the world get out of your Ivory Towers, stop composing in atonal, ugly musical styles and start composing for the people!!!! Write beautiful music, please!!!!!!!

Why?
Wonderfully made music. But: Why do the Norwegians treat their women so horribly, and what kind of Erik is this one with a shot in the stomach who seems to be constantly dying there, but still sings powerfully about things that don't match his wounding at all? No, that doesn't convince me.
