Sterno stove modification, an underrated piece of kit.

Спорт

I have had this unit in my wife's pack for some time now and thought it would be a good time to review it. This can be a Sterno fuel burner or re-purposed to use natural material.
I am using this today as a natural wood burner to boil water and make a cup of Tea.
I am using the Self Reliance Outfitter's 25 oz. cup that is part of the basic generation three water bottle and cup set.

    Great older video. Info is still valid. Nice tackle box stove. Nothing like a hot cup of Earl Gray at the lake.

    I'm with you brother, this stove as a wood burner is totally awesome! I didn't even have to modify it, I just dug a little pit directly beneath, this allowed a nice pile of coals to accumulate underneath the frame, allowing more room to stack the wood onto. Set it up against a rock wall and got some good heat coming off.

    i would like to pass this on to everyone else that may read: i have 2 of this same sterno stove. i love them. i even had one as a kid, as well. without any modification this stove can also be used for the pathfinder alcohol stove or for the trangia alcohol burner. for use with the trangia alcohol burner (shorter than the pathfinder alcohol stove) use an up-side down tuna fish can to raise the trangia to the proper height. a tuna can and the pathfinder are exactly the same diameter and rest in the sterno can support in the bottom of the sterno stove. also for use with an alcohol stove buy a 10" tall X 10-plate aluminum folding windscreen (ebay) as it exactly fits the sterno stove and even has 2 extra plates to spare. so, you see this sterno stove can serve as a muti-fuel stove for many applications. great stove, IMO. for as well as the sterno folding stove works in several applications plus it's low cost the sterno stove is hard to beat, IMO. if you have a large iron skillet or a large 3 legged iron skillet you could even use the sterno stove as a wood burning stove under a covered patio on a table.. nice and easy to enjoy that way and sit down to cook with it! thank you for your video!

    +Rspene smit that's a great idea and thanks. i have some stainless steel skewers that i saved from a bad electric chicken rotisserie oven which i may end-up doing that same thing with? i also have been considering drilling holes through my aluminum folding wind screen and through the sterno stove's 3 sides in-order to fasten the 2 together with small wing nuts since the wind screen is an exact to all corners diameter as the outside of the sterno stove (would hold the wind screen up in wind still allowing the front doors to open and close). i've found that in high winds that a tall wind screen is needed around the sterno stove to protect the flames at the grill top and bottom of pot. the wing nuts on 3 sides would firmly attach and support the wind screen and the wing nuts would install and remove easily by hand (no tools). last time i cruised through the camping stuff at wal-mart i saw the sterno stove hanging on a rack with a $6.50 price tag...... such a versatile item that's so inexpensive! thanks my friend, martina

    That is very useful information. The youtube presenter shows how to use it with wood. You explain how to use it best with the Trangia. I just had 2 days without power so I bought the 100 th anniversary Sterno stove (the red one) that has a smaller clearance to the flame. I am just looking for indoor use. If I decide to buy this stove too I will use the tuna can and etc. with the Trangia.

    I have had one of these since the 1980s when I was still active duty USMA. Have used it with all manner of heat sources including: sterno, heat tabs, paraffin burner, alcohol burner, etc. Never tried wood, but have set at one end of the camp fire and scooped coals into it to heat water. Thanks for the review. It's a great little device that deserves a look. Suggest you start a feather stick outside the "stove" and stick the burning feather stick into your tinder next time. Might be easier.

    👍👍👍 .. nice. Using what you've got and a bit of lateral thinking. Another advantage is that it is already paid for. Manufacturers and Sellers of 'Gear' will always try and convince one the one cannot function without what they have on offer (quite understandable .. that's business). I'm in favour of 'contained fires'. Here in Switzerland, even during periods where there are no fire restrictions in the forest, the Authorities have absolutely no sense of humour with those who set their trees on fire .. eye-watering fines being, in such cases, the order of the day. A preference for 'retro' gear .. all credit to you Sir. As a 'Baby Boomer' myself (YOB 1950), I tend to keep and use gear bought many moons back. As long as it does the job, it's good. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

    Used one of these for 22 years in the army. Heated shaving water and coffee water. Warmed water for MREs. I always carried a couple of bic lighters and used the sterno cans. As long as you have gloves or even a bandana you don’t need to have anything special to pick up the pot by the handle. If I needed to burn twigs/wood I would punch a few holes in an empty sterno can and start my fire with a little toilet paper or scraps of cardboard. Used my canteen cup.

    There's another Sterno stove that already has a grill on the bottom. I like Sterno, when used in conjunction with an alcohol stove, or even a wood stove. A Sterno stove of the right size can hold two cups on top, a can of Sterno, and an alcohol stove to do the heating. The alcohol stove is great at boiling, and the can of Sterno is great at simmering. It's a handy combination. Wood is always a good fire, of course, but not always the best choice, depending on where you are, and what you want to do.

  • @skippert1549

    @skippert1549

    8 жыл бұрын

    +James Ritchie As seen I do carry an alcohol stove, but do prefer the wood or biomass for my fires. A can of sterno takes up to much room in my pack and the weight to heat ratio isn't enough for me to make room in the pack. If I ma on an overnighter then maybe but I keep my pack with me always, so as usual there are trade offs.

    I've made several " Bush Buddy " type stoves from various size tin cans, and used hardware cloth rather than metal in the bottom, they work very well and enable a strong vertically directed flame. If you run a wire (12 gauge copper is fine) from the front posts to the back rod, it can be used with a Trangia, or a soda can stove. The wire forms bottom to that space, and doesn't interfere with folding.

It even looked fine for using in a solar oven because it was thin enough and black. Do you have any metal pot/pan modification videos where you make them into stoves?

    I like this stove and have owned/used them over the years. The plate on the bottom seems like a great hack to hold a Trangia or other small heat source. However, I have a concern using wood in a thin-walled aluminum stove. It seems that there is the potential to burn/melt the stove if the fire is too hot. Anyone have thoughts on that? In my experience, after making a fire in a small twig stove, I let the fire die down to embers so it doesn't' blacken my pots and pans. That's a lot of heat for thin aluminum. IMHO Thoughts?

    Question for you, I just bought one tonight , and will be doing some mods and just from your video and checking mine out, it looks to be an excellent setup, i did see on another video, that someone had a question about burning wood in it, that the temp may be too high for the material it's made of, over time, have you had any issues with the stove and burning wood in it, and the integrity of the stove, thanks.

    +Rspene smit So far so good on my end. I have posted a couple of vids using this stove with the steel floor mod. I am pretty sure if you kept the whole box area filled and on fire for a prolonged period of time, it would probably melt down but I am not trying to heat a tent or keep myself warm,, I am using to cook with and have had no problems. It is lightweight and one should use accordingly. I may grab another one and do a full on meltdown test.

    Ferro rods are wonderful tools, but sometimes you really just need to use a match. Times like this, for example. I have one of these stoves, and you can also start the fire on the tray, and then slide it into the stove as soon as you have a flame. Slide the traty about a quarter of the way in, start the fire, and then slide it the rest of the way in. Doing it this way make the ferro rod much more effective. But using a ferro rod when a match or a BIC works far better is just wearing down your ferro rod needlessly.

    Kinda' reminds me of a Homelite chain saw when trying to get it started with the rod . How about beginning the fire in a sardine can with holes in it outside of the stove itself, then put the can inside the stove upon ignition.

    Great video Skip. Well thought out option for this stove and it's use. I just picked one of these up for this very purpose. I have used a fire predominately up to this point, and I was wondering how to mod this stove for use with wood, as I am not very big on carrying alcohol with me. There is wood all around, but losing an alcohol bottle can mean the difference between eating and not eating if that is all you are used to using for cooking. Just out of curiosity, are you ex-Navy? I should say that I bring the Sterno along as a back up in case of inclement weather. That tea is great in snow. thanks.

    $7 in 2015, most likely IF you can still find it today, guessing $47 today (12/2021). Skip the sterno and go with a Trangia! Cover the bottom of your container with aluminum foil for fast cleanup. Reuse the used foil as an ash liner or soot side down, clean up and fry burgers on it.

    The " Bush Buddy " configuration has a closed bottom so embers don't fall out. The finer the hardware cloth the smaller the embers that fall through, if any. If the sterno stove were set on a non combustible surface, such as metal, slate, shale or a flat rock; this should eliminate any such problem. I imagine setting the sterno in a large pie tin would also prevent any embers of sparks from falling through. I'll have to try it to see what the results would be. Good Luck, and keep on innovating.

  • @skippert1549

    @skippert1549

    +Seamus3051 Indeed, I placed a small piece of 18 or 20 gauge sheet metal in mine and drilled a few air holes. So far there hasn't been too much of a problem with the embers dropping out as the fire burns very efficiently. I don't have a lot of rock in my area so I clean the ground down to dirt unless it is wet from rain or snow. I will say this, best piece of kit for $6 I have found so far!! I will try the hardware cloth just to try it. Like you said,,, Keep on innovating!!

    Haven't tried it, as yet, but the use of metal, window type screen should prevent any embers from falling through. My guess is that it won't last as long as hardware cloth, but it should prevent the dropping of embers if that is a serious concern.

    Dave Fyffe That might be pushing the sterno stove a bit. But hey they are 5.98 at walmart so why not try it. You could put a couple rocks on either side to support the dutch oven then you;d be in business. Balancing would be an issue and a bit dangerous but the small stove thing that came with the Alocs stove would probably handle the weight.

    @skippert1549

    9 жыл бұрын

    Detman101 I will say this,, it is big enough to build a pretty good sized fire in,, but in my opinion if one builds as big a fire as it will hold you may very well melt it as it is relatively thin aluminum. The fire I built was only about a third of what I could have put in it and it did very well, definitely hot enough to cook with. If one needs to stay warm, build a fire on the ground and make it big enough to do the job. It will get hot enough without the full capacity to cook anything you want. I plan to put coals in from a big fire to use as a cooker while camping this year. I'll post a video if I melt it down. LOL

    +SkipperT This was my concern too. I'm thinking of using it as a small bbq cooking dogs or small game right on the wires. Standard method at Boy Scout camp back in the day was to coat the outside of the pot with dish washing liquid before putting it on the fire. A thin coating was sufficient, and the soot wiped right off in the dishpan. Camp Suds should work as well, and is supposed to be bio-degradable.
