Sterno Cooking Fuel: Survival Prep Overview

Not a great video but it should get the point across.
A video showing the Sterno cooking fuel in action and demonstrating how it behaves. I tell some about the cooking fuel and demonstrate some various uses for the product. After watching you should know what to expect when using this particular type of fuel in the field.
From 2:02 to 2:05 you can actually see the "HOT" symbol turning white after just sends of flame. Use caution with these bad boys.
Thanks for watching and please Comment, Rate, and Subscribe.

I found this video by doing research on the 1960s rock band Canned Heat. The band is named after a 1928 delta blues song by blues singer Tommy Johnson called Canned Heat Blues. Apparently, back in the 20s & 30s when prohibition was in effect, people would squeeze the alcohol out of Sterno (also sometimes called Canned Heat) to drink since they could no longer buy alcohol. It was extremely dangerous because, like moonshine, it could make you go bling or even kill you.

Well I know it will boil water just fine...Try the following: 1.) Light it up and let it get warm. Make sure it is actually lit and not just sitting there 2.) Start with a very small pot w/ lid. Position it over the flame by just a few inches. Varying the height will vary the temperature. Use a stand, a wire, or a big can cut in half with lots of holes 3.)Add a cup of water put the LID ON. This helps hold in massive amounts of heat that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere. Let me know!

@@atthecrosshealing the chafing gel fuel is safer than the chafing wick. The thing u need to look for is the blue burning flame. If it burns yellow then its probably producing carbon monoxide. Even the chafing gel will start to burn yellow if theres not enough oxygen. Always have a carbon monoxide alarm to be safe. The chafing gels usually burn faster with twice as much heat output (approx 400w worth of heating) than the chafing wicks too.

If you have ever been to a wedding reception that has a buffet table with those meatballs, macaroni, green beans, etc., they use these cans of Sterno under the pan to keep the food hot! Not a new fuel, but I am happy for you that you have discovered this very useful product.

How do i open that cantankerous lid on these cans? I have tried umteen ways and i keep bending the lip but the lid is stuck on tightly, i have used this chaffing fuel many times over and had no issues opening the lid and reclosing it to use next time. But recently, these new ones stay firmer. I have seen experts with a cake knife do it, and copied them and bent my cake knife… ? Then i seen the lip on your can look all bent up and never seen such a thing with them old chaffing lids i wish i had sence enough to hold onto. I had the same nightmare with Frank’s Quality Kraut in glass jars with metal lids impossible to twist off! And wrote to the company, and they sent me a special tool which relieves pressure inside the jar before twisting the lid to open the jar. What a difference having that tool ! Need one for Sterno chaffing gel fuel, or a twist cap improvement.

Interesting video. I didn't read the comments section fully, but skimmed through the recent ones. Did anyone mention that there's no isopropyl alcohol, but rather methanol inside? It's important information on how to properly handle a fuel and knowing its safety standards.

As long as people use, handle and store it as directed there should be no problem, barring accidents. As in everything, it's the ones that try to get fancy that usually get into trouble. BTW, there's several YT posts of people doing just that.

I bought a Sterno stove yesterday at Walmart for 6$ as a backup for my Coleman duel fuel. I'm going to buy another one. I love the fact that they're only 6$ and they give you so many options. I can use Sterno fuel, Coghlan fuel, an alcohol stove, and even wood (which I think is the best part). My question is, do you know if these cans can be repurposed to use denatured alcohol once they're empty? I've tried making alcohol stoves out of aluminum cans, but they never work.

If all you want to do is keep water hot for instant coffee or rehydrate a meal it's fine, but it won't come to a boil, and its slow. Actual cooking, I mean real food, probably with much difficulty, if at all. These days I've seen cannister stoves selling for under $20 (nice ones). About the price of a 2pk of Sterno. It's just a question of individual requirement.
