The PTIN renewal is not free for 2021 tax year. Renewing by December 2020, you have to pay $35.95 ($21 renewal of application fee and $14.95 for third party contractor fee for processing) This happened in July this year. You would think because of covid and loss of income for so many, this would’ve been waved this year.

Hi Crysta, thanks for this video (and other videos!). I’m very new to tax in general. Yesterday I signed up for an in person class at a local office (popular chain) for the CTEC; this might be a dumb question but is it required prior to becoming an EA? (California) If not, would you recommend just putting more time into studying for the SEE instead? And would you suggest working with an office before going out on your own?

CTEC isn't a prerequisite for being an EA. Yes Tax experience does help a ton

Can you get certified for just part 1 only? I understand you take the three exams separately, but do get a certificate for just doing part 1?

The enrollment and renewal of enrollment user fees for enrolled agents are now from $67 to $140. It’s huge increase.

Any tips on how to study for the tests? Like are you supposed to memorize the entire tax laws? Any memorization tips?

Do you have to have a course certification to get a PTIN? And does getting your certification require you to have a certain amount of hours of experience? Because it seems like I can't be certified without experience, but I can't have experience without being certified.

Yes you can ,the only requirement to to Do EA is you have to be 18+ old and a valid passport

You mention that you used the study material from passkey. They create new material each year, do the laws change so dramatically that if I study the 2022 version, I would not do well taking the test(s) in 2023?

The law is updated every year so you want to be sure to use the current version for the current testing cycle. The testing cycle May 1, 2022-Feb 28, 2023 will be testing on 2021 tax law.

What is fees structure ?

Hello cutie so you don’t have material that you sale like taxes for individuals?

I have watched a ton of videos on EA/tax preparers however no one talks about what things you cant have on your records that will prevent a person from getting approved as an EA or maybe it doesn't matter? Let's say you have been arrested at some point in your life or you are on a tax payment plan please advise.

Answer: In general, any criminal offense resulting in a felony conviction under federal tax laws or a felony conviction related to dishonesty or a breach of trust, that is less than ten years old. Question: What types of tax issues could negatively impact consideration of an application for enrollment? Answer: In general, any overdue tax return that has not been filed or any unpaid taxes unless acceptable payment arrangements have been established. Hi Antonio, are you interested in tax resolution? If so, becoming an EA is a great option. It's also the best way to demonstrate your knowledge of tax law and your ability to assist clientele with more complex tax scenarios. Most definitely a value add!

@Crysta, do you need a company business name to apply for the PTIN? I am in the process and it asked for a business name so I wasn't sure. any help ? I am still taking the 60 hour course for certified tax preparer and hope to be done soon. any suggestions ? Thank you so much for sharing your journey!!! that is my next step to become an EA. However I just recently learned about it and I really need to start working so I figured I can learn as I go and maybe through out this year study for the EA agent license.

Hi Maritsa! As long as you can obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) you should be good to go. You can prepare taxes as long as you obtain a ptin here: www.irs.gov/tax-professionals/ptin-requirements-for-tax-return-preparers You will be able to become an enrolled agent here: www.irs.gov/tax-professionals/enrolled-agents/applying-for-enrollment-to-practice-before-the-irs

Hello Farrukh, each exam will need to be scheduled separately and they last about 3.5 - 4 hours each. Kindly note that you normally have up to 2 years to take all three exams and keep your scores.
