    Just used this as a guide for fixing my 2004 GMC Sierra instrument cluster today. Speedo and tach were flaking out so I just replaced those two motors. When you reach the point where you have to remove the harness from the back of the cluster, BE CAREFUL. Squeeze both sides of the clip that's holding the connector on the back, and wiggle gently til you hear a click and the connector begins to slide out. Do not force it because if you break wires you're in for trouble. For removing and re-soldering the stepper motors you need a very small tip soldering iron for fine work. The Speedo traces on the circuit board are quite close to other circuits,so you have to be quite careful to not slip off with the iron and heat into another circuit on the board Best to start with the tach , as that's easier to re-solder. Use magnification, take your time, and don't over heat during solder. Touch the tip, heat for about a second, apply solder, and let off. If you don't think you got the solder to flow perfectly, you can go back and touch again in a different spot to "re-flow" that connection. Thanks for the video it helped give the overall concept!

    Thanks for your video! I've done a number of repairs on my 2003 GMC Envoy and saved myself lots of money using video's here on KZread! Shame that GM makes such a crappy vehicle as my Envoy but am so glad so many people put out great vid's so I can keep it going. 88,000 miles on it, it's on it's 3rd set of upper/lower ball joints, two front outer axles, second set of struts, third set of brakes, second set of tie rod ends and connector links and more. The front suspension on this thing and the brakes were so under-engineered by GM it's pathetic. But the engine, transmission and 4wd are bulletproof which is the only reason I keep it. First and last GM I ever buy.

    when u solder the new stepper motor in do u heat up the lil pins and then touch the solder to the pin to melt it?

  • @peetre

    @peetre

    7 жыл бұрын

    Very good question Carlos. All circuit boards need to be heated properly, but quickly. Too long and the circuit foil will lift away from the board and possibly break from the circular foil that the pins are solder too. So.... If you have an adjustable temperature iron, I use a medium heat. If it isn't adjustable, use it but try some test with it. You want the tip if the iron as clean as possible. While hot rub the tip across steel wool or a damp sponge. The melt some solder on the tip to keep it from oxidizing. Touch solder to the tip and be sure it melts almost instantly. If it does, you are ready to solder. Hold the tip at about a 45 degree angle touching the pin and the foil on the board and apply the solder at the junction of the tip, the board, and the pin. It should melt quickly and as soon as you see it has flowed in a smooth mound back off with the iron and solder. The solder should look very much like all the other parts and pads. I hope this has helped and good luck. Most people probably ruin the circuits during the heating to remove the parts, so remember "Not too much heat for too long"

If a needle is reading too high, pull off and put it on the amount it was too high. eg. lets say speedometer should read 40, but reads 50. Pull the needle off and move it 10 mph higher. good luck

  • @dnlmachine4287

    You can buy refurbished clusters. They only match a narrow year range, research which ones work with your truck. But GM truck clusters save the odometer reading. If you replace the cluster with the wrong one, or one with vastly different odometer reading....not good. If I didnt want to do the rebuild myself, I would find someone comfortable with electronic circuit board soldering, show them this video, then ask them to do it. Refurbished clusters here in Canada are $250 plus. Buy the stepper motor kit from amazon. Stay gold.

    +jj coolj when do they rest there? When i turn my ignition off, mine tend to rest where they were before turning them off. If you doubt the position of the needle while in operation, i would verify it with another instrument, like voltmeter for voltage or a oil pressure meter, etc. If my gauge doesnt correspond, then i would remove and reinstall the needle with the amount of angular displacement to make it read correctly. Dont let the shafts move when you have it out.. Then retest. Fill the gas tank first so you know the needle should be indicating full for that one.

    What's so stupid about GM is that they NEVER issued recalls for this problem that affected millions of cars, created a safety hazards, probably gave the police millions of dollars in speeding tickets because the gauges were faulty. Same is true for these exact cars and trucks that have faulty wipers that stay vertical after they are turned off. They just got sued and lost against the Feds for faulty ignitions, but these two things were also ignored. I have an 05 Monte Carlo LS, and ALL of these are issues with this car. Oh and this thing has 76K actual miles on it.

    +kjemradio That is really terrible. We all see this happening. Why the consumer has to pay for a common failure is too bad. I guess the only thing good, is that a lot of people on youtube show the way to fix things for less.

    Yeah I am actually grateful that someone posted this video (and found one for the wiper issue (that's on an impala, but uses the same system as the Monte Carlo). Of course I have never soldered on PCBs before, but I do not not to leave the iron on the board too long. Also here is a PSA for you all doing this. Just like PC components you have to take care and not produce a static shock on these panels. You will fry it. Handle all PCBs (printed circuit boards) by the edges, don't touch the solder points (that's where you can damage them with a static shock), and make sure your are on the same electrical level of this system. In other words touch something metal to discharge static, don't work on carpet, and take your time. DO NOT GROUND YOURSELF. That would be VERY bad.

    I have a couple of thoughts on that. I don't recall where I bought mine from, it was long ago. First, how about trying a GM dealer? or Since many are selling them in 6 each, how about posting that you would like to team up with someone, and perhaps each take 3? Lastly, buy all 6, and then list the remaining ones for perhaps 20 bucks each!

    I agree plus’s wen you take dash apart you can figure out how it comes apart always keep the screw as little ones are easy to lose even with magnetic trays and stuff so what I’m saying if you brake the dash it’s not going to mater just don’t break the cluster of gauges and hopefully you get a good one they had a lot of probs with these gauges in the 90s

    a scanner will give the codes, and a good scanner will list the probable causes for the fix. I dont know any fuse you could pull, that wouldnt affect other things. Just put a piece of black electrical tape over the light

  • @GMGaugeRepair
    @GMGaugeRepair6 жыл бұрын

    Using a professional desoldering gun is the proper process. Putting tape at the end of the needles is no way accurate.The black colored stepper motors your are seen installing do not hold up and will eventually fail only leading to another repair in the future. 2003 to 2006 models have up to 5 issues: (1)Gauges fail 1 by 1 because of defective stepper motors. (2) Dim or dead VFD displays which are the PRNDL and DIC(driver info center). (3) Back lighting at night dim or dead behind the gauges, not the VFD's or digital displays.(4) Intermittent power issue where the gauge cluster and the entire panel will eventually fail leaving only your back lighting bulbs, blinker bulbs and "Check Engine" MIL lit up. (5) Solder joints and bad parts on the circuit board. There can also be software updates and need to be updated on the circuit board. If you're going to ship your cluster off and want it rebuilt properly with a guarantee, it should be done right once and once only without the inconvenience of inferior experience and inferior parts with no guarantee.

    +Gerardo Rivera if you dont have a reference where they were using the tape when you start, it is rather a guessing game. You could put tape at each location and just put numbers, like 1 thru 9 on each one spaced evenly. go for a ride and try to guess where the needles SHould be, vs where they are. write the numbers down of where they are operating, and then pull the needles off and place them back the amount that they differ from where you think they should be. eg. lets say full tank of gas has the needle on "5" where it should have been on "9". take the needle off and place it 4 numbers higher and try again.

    Could this guy have used a BIGGER soldering iron?...my gosh, that thing he was using was HUGE!!! It must have been a 60 watter with a 3/16" tip on it...A hint for DIY'ers...all you need is a 25 watt iron with a fine tip for this work...I'll be surprised if he didn't overheat the bridges and weaken the tracks on the board...perhaps that's why he didn't finish the rest of this vid for the reinstallation and testing... ...just sayin'...

  • @MrSummerbreeze01

    60 Watt is considered low wattage for a soldering iron. Plug in wait about 1 minute and touch your solder to it. It should immediately melt and flow. Then touch hot iron and pin simultaneously. Then immediately push the solder into the iron and see it flow from the iron to the pin and the foil. 2 seconds maximum
