Lew Wallace was later U.S. Minister to the Ottoman Empire. An American clergyman named Mahan had published a life of Jesus, claiming to have translated it from hitherto-unknown ancient documents, one of which he'd supposedly studied at the Hagia Sophia. Wallace was called on to look into the claim, and found that Mahan had never been to Constantinople, and the manuscript did not exist. If he had read Mahan's book, he might have saved himself the trouble of investigating -- a noticeable portion of it was plagiarized directly from Ben-Hur!

This clip feels not-about-what-it's-about in a slightly weird way for me - namely that afaik this is an actual controversy in the literary world that, notwithstanding Fry's excellence and the legitimacy of his (side's) concerns, nor my lack of strong opinions, he would not normally have the last word on in the way he does in the role of host here

@@misterwishart for better or worse he used the show as his soapbox plenty of times - religion, science, Shakespeare conspiracy theorists, overeating, EU stuff, Elgin Marbles, &c. and it could indeed be entertaining, as it is here. But it is definitely sincere too... maybe the awkwardness is that on QI the host is generally the authority - sort of moderator/encyclopedia/tutor, but then 10% of the time Stephen is basically being a pundit, but he's kinda speaking with the same authority? I *think* Sandi does less of this, but again, I do love them both
