Stephen Stills = Guitar God - Crossroads / You Can't Catch Me - 1983
Музыка
Stephen Stills, recorded live in 1983, on the Rock & Roll Tonight TV program. What an insane performance.
Guitar God - Meet- Mr. Stephen Stills
"I got everything I know from Stephen Stills. Those people who thought Clapton was God hadn't heard Stills play acoustic guitar." - Michael Hedges
A little history on the song Crossroads...from Wiki:
"Cross Road Blues" is a song by Delta Blues singer Robert Johnson; released on a 78 rpm record in 1936 by Vocalion Records, catalogue 3519. The original version remained out of print after its initial release until the appearance of The Complete Recordings in 1990. In 1961, producer Frank Driggs substituted the previously unreleased alternative take on the first reissue of Johnson's work, the long-playing album King of the Delta Blues Singers.[2] Because of the historical significance of "Cross Road Blues", it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.[1]
Lyrics and interpretation
"The Crossroads", where Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for mastery of the blues, according to the legend. It is the intersection of U.S. Route 61 and U.S. Route 49, at Clarksdale, Mississippi, United States.
The lyrics tell of the narrator's failed attempts to hitch a ride from an intersection as night approaches. The song had frequently been linked to stories of Johnson selling his soul to the devil for the ability to play music, although nothing in the actual lyrics speaks of these events.[3] Historian Leon Litwack and others state that the song refers to the common fear felt by blacks who were discovered out alone after dark; that Johnson was likely singing about the desperation of finding his way home from an unfamiliar place as quickly as possible because of a fear of lynching.[3][4] In addition, the lyrics could be allusion to the curfews that were then imposed on blacks in the South. The imagery of the singer falling to his knees and the mention of his failure to find a "sweet woman" suggests that the song is also about a deeper and more personal loneliness. [5] Finally, the lyrics can be associated to the urban legend that blues musician Tommy Johnson once sold his soul to the Devil for his musical ability. Due to having the same last name (yet no relation)to Tommy Johnson, the legend was associated with Robert Johnson more so; the film Crossroads tells the story of the song with Robert Johnson as the one who sold his soul, not Tommy Johnson.
On March 10, 1968, Cream recorded a live version "Crossroads" from their performance at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The version was arranged by guitarist Eric Clapton, and included two lines borrowed from Johnson's "Traveling Riverside Blues." The song features an eight-note guitar riff and has both major and Minor scale centers.[7] Cream's cover of the song was placed at #409 on the 2004 List of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and #3 on the 2008 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time. The song also ranks #10 on Guitar World's 100 Greatest Guitar Solos.[8]

It's strange. I think I always focused so much on the vocals, that I failed to hear the guitar wizardry that was happening. It's just over the past 5-6 years that I've been looking up Steven Stills solo, and on guitar.

In my 70 years on earth I think I've seen only two other famous guitarists who could play acoustic guitar with this kind of brilliant dexterity, John McLaughlin and Al Dimeola.
Stills..., Just unreal. )
The best combination of a singer-songwriter.... Music, lyrics, arrangement, sing, play .... some might be greater than him in parts, but not in whole.
Stephen Stills is a great! song writer and guitarist. I love his style .

@@ErgonBill People think Stephen is underrated because, even if you don't think he's the GOAT, at his peak he had better chops than most guitarists that commonly appear in any 'Top Ten List' today.
his singing voice is in the top 10 too, just like his guitar plating.

Man makes it shine, makes it shine!!! He's not a god, he would tell us all, that would be sacriligeous! He's a man, playing a guitar in a God given world. He, Mr. Stills, has always described his up bringing. Modesty is what a strong, good willed men uses to shave with. If you don't understand, live on a few years. Thank you for posting the video Rusted.
The people I live in awe of are the people who make every song they sing their own. Stills is one of those people. They are the true greats, and it’s a motley group of folks, that’s for sure!
The jewels one can stumble across on the interwebs is freaky! Actually caught this show during the live simulcast on KLOS. Thnx for uploading.

Glenn Hall he played them all except for davids and Grahams songs thus given the name Captain Many Hands. Bad part was they couldnt take it on the road because he played bass drums organ & keys. They adked Eric Clapton Phil Everly Jon Sebastion and where turned down. Atrus Ergeman president of Atlantic Records about bringing Neil in. At the time CSN and Dallas Taylor each shared top billing. Taylor hated the idea of Young joining so when Neil entered the picture, Taylor pulled rank and got rid of Neils friend Gregg Reaves so Neil said to Stills if that happens I vote Dallas Taylor out who was Stills drummer. Thats why on 4 Way Street credits for bass and drums got to Calvin " Fuzzy Samuels and Johny Barbata

I am in awe. Amazing guitar work AND singing!
just magnificent .
i sold guitars in a shop in holland we got a lot of guitars who been by eric clapton (the models he dis liked) i played alot of martin, santa cruz taylor all handmade but de martin d48 has always a special place in mine heart never played one(i guess there no more than 10 in the world stephen and neil young got one)they are lucky because they sound great you can hear it on many of stills songs(freetop flyer for example)
I saw him in '85 and he was the best guitarist that I ever heard. (I also saw Jimmy Paige, Carlos Santana and Jerry Garcia to name a few.)
My favorite Stills video! I've tried, for years, to get close to this - 'Suite Judy' tuning (Either E or D)...But, Stephen is like some kind of Sub-Human with that Southern Blues timing. My hero ! God, I miss real music. This is irreplaceable!
Incredible 💜🎶🎶
Stephen Stills & KLOS rock!
I loved CSN and CSNY, but there wasn't room for that much songwriting talent in one band. Stephen and Neil barely got to contribute two or three songs per album, not nearly enough. Stephen's first solo album is one of the great classic albums in my opinion. Manassas' first album was stupendous. He should have been solo all along with his ability. Don't get me wrong, David Crosby contributed some very great songs; one of which was a masterpiece that never made onto a studio album ("":Lee Shore"). Graham even had a handful of great ones. But I'm rambling on...old age is getting me down. "

Your soul, to be able to play like this?
This dude seems so mellow, and un-flashy. When I see the CSN videos, it's always his voice to carries the whole group ... he is on the tune and the other guys are all over the place, sometimes good and sometimes squeaky, but Stills is on track.
