Stephen Lee (Snooker Match Fixing Investigation)

Спорт

Here is a small documentary on some of the matches Stephen Lee was accused of fixing before being banned from the sport in 2013. Interesting to watch excerpts of the frames and matches involved. Hope you enjoy.

I've met the man. I liked him a lot. He is a bit of a wildchild. As to his snooker. He's a natural talent. That's different to practicing and honing a skill. He plays on flair most of the time. Which makes him magic to watch. Just like O'Sullivan. When he's on, he's unbeatable. But that flair can leave you sometimes. Trust me I know. As to the allegations. There was betting and shenanigans going on in the sport at that time. Stephen was likely involved to some extent. But there is no evidence he threw any matches. Even if he did, it wouldn't be as obvious as missing easy shots. The video shows misses by millimetres. You would throw a match by cue ball control and shot selection. The one wrong cue ball control in the video was nearly pulled off. The one 'wrong' shot selection shows a 'shot to nothing'. Which is essentially no real shot on except a longshot, leaving a safe position. They wanted to make an example, Stephen fitted the bill. I feel very sorry for him. My personal feeling is that the things he probably did deserved a fine. A 12 year ban for an unprovable allegation is unconscionable.

Ye mate. They don't like ppl winning. As gambling companies are set up to take your money but moan when you win. But they win every night. This whole saga starts because bookies don't want to pay out an try an find inconsistencies in shots an betting patters. But it's OK for everyone to bet on a loser an if ae bet loses we don't get to look into betting patterns yo see if it was a fix. Could u imagine standing at William Hill an saying the race is a fix an I want my money back. But they can do it to you. Double standards

For most players it is indeed more difficult to rattle the ball than to make it. But a lifelong professional player has a much higher level of accuracy and control - even cheating pockets is part of their standard repertoire. To throw a game you don't need to perfectly rattle a ball. If you accidentally make it, you can try again with the next shot. This is inverse to playing normally where if you miss, you don't get another chance.

Wrong! he was proven innocent, there has never been any proof John has fixed any match ever! there used to be a huge newspaper called ''the News of the World'' very corrupt and owned by Rupert Murdoch. it famously ended because of phone hacking scandals and links to corruption, they had a long list of famous people, actors and sports people that the paper targeted for spurious stories, John was just one of many targets, David Douglas, the former high-ranking Metropolitan Police officer who investigated match-fixing allegations, after being given access to the unedited version of tapes said that he was without doubt that John had no idea what was going on. Here is a link - www.sportingintelligence.com/2010/09/21/revealed-why-john-higgins-was-cleared-of-match-fixing-because-the-evidence-including-a-statement-from-mazher-mahmood-told-the-full-story-210901/ John did serve a ban and a fine from the Snooker authority's, which to me was very harsh considering John was still trying to figure out what had just happened . but Barry Hearn and Snooker were under public pressure to be seen to be doing something while the investigation was under way. John was a victim and has never fixed any match ever, but the mud sticks and Johns haters refuse to look at the facts and gleefully use any opportunity to perpetuate the lies. unfortunately. lol , the guy that made the video (Mohamood) does not believe John match fixed but you do? that's a particularly stupid position to take, its like you inventing a story and then some people believed it, you would think they were idiots right?... well the News of the World made idiots out of you.

"51. As set out above, Mr Lee did not contest any of the evidence as to what bets were placed, when, and by whom. Nor did he contest the timing of the telephone communications, or of when which computers were used for what. 52. He was therefore driven to accept that on seven occasions different groups of bettors only connected through him, and following communications from him, placed similar bets on him to lose, or to lose a particular frame or to lose by a specific score; that they bet significant amounts on multiple platforms; that those bets were quite out of the ordinary for the bettors and for the markets; and that the bets proved successful and netted considerable sums for the bettors. Lee was definitely chiselling but it astounds me how many chances he got in those frames, some of his shot selections were dreadful even for a man trying to throw a frame. The plant was unlucky and he obv wasn't trying to get that end result from that shot, he probably intended on missing later. I'm not a fan of Higgins either and agree with most of the comments below.

How many times each player missed crucial balls and sometimes made it really ? No one can forget the 146 made by Ronnie O'Sullivan against Barry Pinches at Welsh Open 2014, just because didn't have 147 special price. This is because the prize money system is completely crazy and unuseful. If you win, you have more than double of the runner-up and more than 4 times the semi-finalist... and how much earn any player after the quarter finalists ? just necessary to be refund of the invest. If WST want to have a lot of new talents, they must make almost 64 people to earn someting correct to really be able to manage to be professional. In 2004, Graeme Dott was close to stop professional playing, due to lack of money to be able to live, to train and to go to the tournaments. His world final saved his professional career and all remember how good he was after. But how many players had to stop, 20 years ago or 10 years ago or actually ? A lot, you can be sure. PJ Nolan, the Irish coach of Ken Doherty, said in a training i participated in 2011 in Belgium, that in Ireland, there are almost 150 players able to make a maximum break but 90% prefer to avoid trying to be professional and follow a sure professional career on a normal job. So, after saying all this, Stephen Lee have been thrown by WST simply because of his body image, instead of seeing how marvellous player he is... since 1992 when he turned pro.

Remember that John Higgins got trapped in a match fixing scam on camera but he was protected to save snooker. I'm kind of grateful then but on the other hand all of this stuff still taints the game really. What I've been interested in since but haven't been able to find anything about - how did John Higgins' win in the 2011 Worlds final go down with the crowd and the wider snooker world given it was after the News of the World sting in 2010? Or was the sting carried out in 2010 but not aired until after May 2011. Either way I thought he'd get booed coming into the arena etc, and I imagine the whole tournament was tarnished by him going all the way, but haven't been able to find anything out about it

The best way of reducing this would be to ban all but ‘match winner’ bets. Stop all the frame winner, first ball potted, match score etc type bets. It’s far too easy to lose a frame on purpose and still win the match, meaning no real financial risk for the player. It would be far less appealing if the loss meant forfeiting a run in a tournament and any associated ranking points. This still wouldn’t solve the problem but it would make it more difficult and a larger risk for the players. It’ll never happen though, as the multitude of smaller bet options are far too lucrative for the bookies.
