Stephen Fry vs Ann Widdecombe: Catholic Church iq2 Shorts

www.intelligencesquared.com - In this, our first ever iq2 Short, Ann Widdecombe and Stephen Fry lock horns over the motion 'The Catholic Church is a force for good in the world'.
The animation is adapted from a debate we staged in 2009 which also included Christopher Hitchens and John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Abuja ( • The Catholic Church is... ).

@@carlshadbolt9193 Well, I don't think there is a creator to begin with, but let's ignore that for a minute. In animals, it is almost universal to have a male and female form of each creature (there are some rare mutations that allow species to reproduce asexually), but look outside the kingdom animalia and you can see a whole plethora of sexes: most plants are both male and female, fungi have thousands of genders and the vast majority of species don't have genders (bacteria and archea, just to name a few ten's of millions of species). So if God thought it essential to have male and female for each species, he failed in that regard for the vast, vast majority of species on earth. But that's not really your point, now is it? Your point is that "well if Stephen thinks being gay is something that is so great, then how come he doesn't have his own children with his partner? OH WAIT! he can't since you need a man and woman for that! Ha! check mate!" Thing is, that is not even close to Stephen's point. He is more than aware of that fact. His point is that he shouldn't be called evil just for being born gay. And your... let's call it an argument doesn't counter that. It doesn't come even somewhat close.

I thought you meant secular because atheist just means that one doesnt believes the claim that there is a god. Wich tells you nothing about the person or state with that information alone. Unless you are trying to somehow connect atheism with being evil. What I meant by saying that you are not entirely to blame since you are probably religious because of how you were raised, is that even though you think that having someone thrown to eternal torture just for never knowing the word of that particular god is a good and just act, or not able to recognize evidence and reason even if hit you in the face, it doesnt mean you are fully responsible for that. My guess is that you were indoctrinated and told that believing something with no evidence whatsoever is a virtue since you were young, so I can understand how that can be hard to leave behind and face family and friends who are in your same cult.

@@benjaminnass5774 ***I thought you meant secular because atheist just means that one doesnt believes the claim that there is a god. Wich tells you nothing about the person or state with that information alone.** I fear this confusion is my fault, since I reacted to a statement about secularism. When you look at the opposite of religion, namely atheism, one cannot argue that atheism has a particular good trackrecord. With regards to secularism, I am not quite sure how this is better than religion. I’d say you have several forms of it. For instance, Saddam Hussein and Bashar al Assad were/are in charge of secular regimes, the Shah in Iran was a secular regime. All these regimes have a pretty poor track record with regards to human rights. Secularism in Europe is different fortunately, though I would again argue that they have a poor track record compared to religion. With the introduction of all kinds of liberal policies the role of the family has diminished and this causes great harm all around Europe (e.g. children growing up in broken families). Secular philosophies usually do not care that much about morality and about imposing an objective moral system. Moral degradation is usually what follows. The statement by the initial writer of this thread is thus wrong. Religion provides superior outcomes when compared to atheism or secularism. I live nearby a monastery for instance, which has helped the poor in periods of extreme poverty, not only materially, but also spiritually. Secular regimes have nothing spiritual to offer, yet humans have spiritual needs. Anyways, if we use the ‘pure’ definition of secularism, then there is no government or moral system that can be branded as being secular. Secularism means neutrality with regards to religion/life philosophies. No regime is neutral towards these things. I think the honest comparison is to look at religion versus liberalism. I would say religion provides a more comprehensive and coherent system of society compared to liberalism. The outcomes of a religious society are usually better as well. There is more cohesion between people, family life is strong, which creates a good basis voor economic success and psychological wellbeing. The individualism associated with liberalism has created many problems in European societies, the breakdown of families etc. ***Unless you are trying to somehow connect atheism with being evil.*** Atheism does not have a particular good track record, so it is quite easy to connect it with evil. Especially because atheism logically implies that morality is not absolute. Absolute morality only exists in a theistic worldview. This means that things like ‘thou shalt not kill’ are not absolute values, but subjective values in an atheistic worldview. And in societies where atheism/agnosticism is successful, you usually see a moral degrading of general norms in a society. Europe has suffered massively from this. ***What I meant by saying that you are not entirely to blame since you are probably religious because of how you were raised, is that even though you think that having someone thrown to eternal torture just for never knowing the word of that particular god is a good and just act, or not able to recognize evidence and reason even if hit you in the face, it doesn't mean you are fully responsible for that.*** Please keep your smugness for yourself. I can say exactly the same thing about an atheist/agnostic person, since many of them have never chosen to be atheist/agnostic, but were raised that way. Also, it is extremely stupid to state that evidence and reason would lead to an atheistic worldview, as the question on whether God exists is not a scientific question, but a philosophical one. ***My guess is that you were indoctrinated and told that believing something with no evidence whatsoever is a virtue since you were young, so I can understand how that can be hard to leave behind and face family and friends who are in your same cult.*** Eh, you do not know me. I live in an extremely secular country (the Netherlands), all my friends are atheist. Who are you to state this nonsense, without knowing anything about me? Also, atheists/agnosts believe many things for which there is no objective evidence, e.g. the value of human rights, morality etc. What is your point exactly?

The Inquisition did not deal with traitors nor did it deal with criminals, its sole duty was to investigate charges stating that a Jew [or any previously non-Christian] who said he or she had converted had truly renounced his or her faith and followed Catholic teachings. I will presume that we are talking about the Spanish Inquisition as you mention Jews converting to Christianity. Suffice it to say these "conversos" has gained many positions of prominence in Spanish society and even high positions of influence in the Royal Court itself. That is why the Spanish Crown implemented and ran the Spanish Inquisition.... Will I say that again.? The Spanish government ie.. The Spanish Crown.. started and ran the Spanish inquisition. The bigotry associated with the Spanish Inquisition was primarily an invention of Protestant England and Europe which sought to conflate Spanish militarism with catholicism ..a myth that has persisted through the ages until recently. It even has a name now..."the black legend" and historical documents both in Spain and in the Vatican recently released have debunked most claims of its detractors.

So all the enslavement and slaying in the old testament is not binding on Catholics but is a history of the struggles of the Jewish people which brought them to the point where the Messiah was born.

@@carlshadbolt9193 actually yes he can. Because free will was given to humanity by lucifer, not by God. If God is all knowing and all powerful then he knows full well who is a criminal and who is capable of great evil and who will act on that, and yet, he allows them to exist and he allows them to act on it. Therefore he is directly to blame because that is the way that he created them. And if you wish to decide the argument that free will is a gift of God, then I remind you that humans were made in his image, if we are capable of acts of evil and crime, then so is he, otherwise we wouldn't be capable. God is a powerless coward, a dead beat dad, an absentee landlord. Only a coward would turn his tail an abandon his own creation, only a coward would run and hide from responsibility of creating something imperfect. I met Anne several times whilst she was an M.P. for Maidstone in Kent and had the misfortune to accompany her on her Christmas Day visits to the hospital ward on which I worked as a sister. She was truly as awful, arrogant and insincere as I'd anticipated, lacking in the most basic of social skills, unempathetic, awkward and unamiable; it was indeed an embarrassing challenge to find any patient willing to meet her or shake her hand. Her parting gift - a tin of 'Houses of Parliament' humbugs!
