Stephen D. Houston on Vital Signs: The Visual Cultures of Maya Writing, Part 5

We live in a world of constant movement, from daily walks to mass migrations. Our evolving sense of self arises from that motion, and the ancient Maya were no different. They created many arrested scenes, captured mid-stride but implying journeys short and long. Hieroglyphs described that flux, focusing on horizontal and vertical paths that, in mythic and cosmic form, gave pattern, meaning, and certainty to human acts.
This is the fifth talk of the six-part series “Vital Signs: The Visual Cultures of Maya Writing,” presented by Stephen D. Houston of Brown University for the 72nd A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts.

21:17 “…in fact the *eastern* stela of this configuration of stelae around this four-part building with four different entrances is not only the largest, it is also one with a few more dates and it tells us that this king came from somewhere else. Where did he come from? He came from a city that is oriented physically, with respect to Ceibal, over to the *west* …” Wait, why would a king coming from somewhere over to the _west_ be commemorated by a stela situated on the _east,_ especially when 22:13, say, kings presiding over kingdoms to the north come through the northern doorway? _[Edit:]_ And then the text on the screen 24:06 refers to “new dynasty from east.”
