The lecturer made the presentation fun with his humor. This has to be the best Mayan presentation open to the public. I understand the Mayans a lot better now then before. I am going to watch the presentation this lecturer did on Mesoamerica chocolate now. I will save this video to watch again later on in the year.

My beloved Maya are going to miss Mr. Coe, one of the giants in Maya studies.

Fantastic, I hope to find more lectures. No doubt I will watch this several times, so much to learn, take in.

Great lecture on Maya glyphs and phoenetics. It is the most advanced chapter open to the public, I must say. I hope also that more codices are found, the scribes work adding to the Mayan legacy. Maybe they will be in the highlands -- then anthropologists can conjoin them to their lower altitude brother and sister Maya. Tonina comes to mind. Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Quiche and all the rich assortment of cultures and languages. Curious how they know the "latin" source is one particular dialect down Copán way. Also curious that Calakmul hasnt produced more study...

I caught something he said it was really interesting and stopped the video to write this reply. The video is stopped at 5:54 right after he says something to the effect of "science doesn't demand practicality anymore." I find that to be a very interesting statement. I can understand how in one perspective that the demand that a given scientific development produce money or to produce a product or to do a thing is sometimes obstructive to the greater advantage of unique new knowledge. There's also from another perspective there could be some problems where if too much of science moves away from the job of solving practical problems for humans we may become a very problematic society.

I have never researched this but i would bet money that de landas initial translations were correct in reference to the different signs to sounds. I was born and raised in Guatemala 🇬🇹 they destroyed most of the original writings and information about the mayas and some even believe that it was re-written to appease the Spanish religion catholicity so the latest popol vuh is very similar to the Bible. An example of a source I was reading on this is: ‘Secrets of the Maya science/ religion’ by Hunbatz Men. But then the question is again- why India, how did they know about India? @@Blackw0lff Also remember that if you go back REALLY far back, sealevels were lower so there were more islands to hop between. 10 000 BCE sealevel were more than 100 meters lower than today, and also tectonics had some land higher or lower also because of our planets molten core moves around. Just go to google-maps and check which parts of the pacific is shallower than 120 Meters depth and you have the sites of potential islands.

The only "Evidence" of human sacrifice are documents written by Spaniards and post conquest documents. You won't find anything about human sacrifice pre conquest, because it didn't exist. The Aztecs were not superstitious people. They did not believe in multiple gods. Mythology should notbe taken in a literal sense,It's called metaphors. They understand science and mathematics, their calander is proof of it. Heart sacrifice was a propaganda mechanism, it most certainty never happened guy.

It was de-emphasized in the talk, but the Europeans were so busy Dong A Colonialism that they blew their chance at learning the writing system from the Maya who knew it (Diego de Landa accidentally got the phonetic Mayan spellings of the Spanish alphabet, and that's it), and then Spain was so good at Colonialism that literally ever Mayan speaker were unable to read their script by the time Europeans were interested in learning to read it.

When people say "uh" it helps them collect their thoughts so they can continue explaining. It's a normal part of communication.
