Step-By-Step: How To Tie A Turle Knot For Atlantic Salmon/Steelhead Spey Flies (The Simple Way)

If you have ever fished Spey flies for Atlantic Salmon/Steelhead you know just how beautiful these flies are. These flies usually are tied on traditional hooks with a unique tapered loop up-eye but if you were to tie these flies to your leader using a popular improved Clinched knot you come to realize quickly that something doesn't look right. In this video, I want to show you how to tie a Turle knot; a more secured knot to tie your favourite Spey flies (in my opinion).
But don't take my words for it! The folks at Rio Fly Fishing already had some tests done in their laboratory. They found that the Turle knot retains approximately 92% of the tensile strength. On the other hand, the improved Clinched knot retains only about 66% of the tensile strength.

So many complicated ways of tying this knot, this is the best. Closest to a perfection loop, and sometimes I screw up and tie one and it doesn’t slide 🤓

Here is a gorgeous flow tank video of a Picasse doing its dance (..and yeah, it kinda looks like a Turle knot) : kzread.info/dash/bejne/gXiWpNCKcqngf7Q.html There are many YT vids on how to tie Le Picasse - not to be confused with the 'As de Pique' - they're both quite yellow.

True! The original Turle Knot doesn't have a lock knot at the tag end, and the slip knot should be a "figure 8" not a simple knot...

This isn't a Turle knot (but to be fair, part of it is). What was demonstrated is called a Canadian Jam Knot. Worth noting is that Seán mentioned moistening the line while you draw the two knots together; he actually didn't do this and you can see how after dressing the knot, the centimetre nearest the eye is kinked up and greatly weakened. 92%, my eye. Any knot that requires 'special handling' is just not worth the risk for me. A third point: the wiggly Clinch Knot that was shown is not quite the same as the "Improved" Clinch Knot referred to in the video description; so maybe it wasn't a fair demonstration? Doesn't matter to me, though: I'd never use any of those 4 knots.
