Atlantic Salmon Fishing Basics | How To

In this excellent video, Bill Spicer covers all the essentials to help any angler get started in fly fishing for Atlantic Salmon. Wet flies, dry flies, casts, leaders and much more are all discussed by Bill while he is visiting Newfoundland fishing for fresh run Atlantic Salmon. The tactics discussed in the full-length video have equal application to other species such as trout and steelhead. Bill is the guest of Newfound Outfitting and Ray Humber who has a strong Atlantic Salmon run each season on probably the prettiest river on the island!

At 8:22 a fish jumps right behind him as he’s talking, perfect timing! Just caught a glimpse of it out of the corner of my eye.

That was great! I learned some things and it refreshed my casting with some fine instruction. Thanks, maybe someday I'll fish there.

Nothing beats a Hardy 'click check' fly reel for excitement. Hardy St John, Taupo Perfect, Marquis Salmon 1 are the best.

Beautiful Spot, would love to visit there, however as an Irish Atlantic Salmon Fisherman I have to say I never fished using Dry fly methods for Salmon.. we always cast at 45 degrees and Swim the fly just under the surface.. Salmon dont feed on flies like Trout.. you need to antagonise them to provoke their killer instinct..Would love to try those methods in Newfoundland,,,.. would also experiment with the Dry fly method..thanks for the video post.. hope to see you there sometime

Great video but trending towards light tackle. He's essentially catching big grilse at 4-7 lbs as opposed to the 25 lb+ salmon that the Eastern rivers can produce which is where a 9wt comes into its own.

agreed. we like to use seven weights for smaller salmon and heavier rods for bigger fish. however, in the fall we like the heavier rods as often we need to cast larger flies in heavy wind. thanks for feedback

Hello. In NY salmon don’t take dries they only take nymphs and sacs. Should I get another line like Intouch salmon/steelhead for Atlantic salmon for my 3 wk vacation?

I don't think you need it if you have a good weight-forward flatline. You're right, it is hard to get the salmon to come to the surface on upstate NY rivers but I have had success with steelhead. Specifically, if you "wake" a wet fly across runs with a riffling hitch (as shown in the video), have caught numerous steelhead. Especially in October/November. Have fun!

Well maybe if people thought to let a fish go once in a while for the last 10 generations we wouldn't be in a situation where "the time has come that we need to catch and release".

Ok "the thumb is the strongest part of the body" is really just a terrible statement; if this were true the double overhand deadlift and pinch climbing grip wouldn't be the weakest respective ways to grip.
