Step 4: Insulation

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This week, I clean the floor, install insulation, and my buddy Gio helps out.
Its been a ton of work, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel. All that’s left to do is put everything back, and paint the side, but that’s a story for the next video. Stay tuned!
Insulation I used: Polyiso rigid foam board.
Special thanks to ranger Gio!

insulation can trap moisture from condensation. it dont matter if the foam is closed nor open cell, if moisture gets to the steel, it will become trapped by the insulation and your van will rustout from the inside it may take years to be a problem, you wont notice it till the rust breaks through to the outside, then it is too late. Dont do it.

Howdy mate, praying you see this comment and can provide some real life insight: would you use POR15 again if you were redoing it? I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone paint their floor in it, but I really love the idea. Did you read/see others doing it? How’d it hold up? I’m basically trying to find a way to rust proof my already rust free vanagon before laying down insulation etc. Any detailed insight would be so incredibly helpful. Cheers from Australia!

It has held up really well so far, but I do have flooring over it. POR is supposed to be put directly on metal, so I'm not sure if is the best choice for the job. I did it that way because I had used it in my split bus and it had worked great there. If I had to do this again, I would probably use some sort of bed liner like Raptor Liner or something. That would provide better protection from scuffs and a bit of noise insulation. If you do have any rust spots though, POR is amazing for encapsulating it.

@@gottasplit5707 thanks so much for the insight-I’m super grateful. I was considering Raptor, but I have to be reaaaaally sure there’s no rust under there before I spray it over the top! Thanks for your time man, hope to see more content soon 🙏🏼

What did you spray on the floor to make it look brand new ? Is it a liquid rust remover ?

IF we only use our campers in the summer, and we don't have AC, why do we need insulation ? Maybe for the AC ? Maybe for camping in the fall or winter ? Maybe for condensation ? A maintenace guy I knew used caulk to "stick" things like pictures in place, easy to attach, they stay put and if you want to take them down, a utiliy knife or wire will work...I wonder if that would work on the foam board...

DanTheManIOM The insulation keeps out the heat and noise also. There is a spray adhesive you can use that is for interior stuff. I’d be careful with any other type of adhesive since many can melt foam. It could work though. Just try it on a small piece fits to see if it reacts.

Insulation is great, but the fatmat started to melt and caused a lot of problems. Dynamat is a better product that shouldn't melt since it is made of rubber and not tar.

I realize i'm literally 3 years late but I stumbled on your video and just got my vanagon. I always planned on doing the sound insulation, however i'm confused if I should also add the foam insulation you are doing here. Is it mostly to prevent heat from entering the cabin? Or is it also for other risks? Thanks!

I added it for heat, but it does help a little with the road noise, and doesn't soak up moisture like other materials do. If I were to do it over again, I would use a different material that is easier to install though. The cutting and putting the pieces together took forever.

@@marc-antoinesauve5636 You'd probably be good with just the fact mat, although I would suggest using Dynamat. Its made of better material that doesn't melt when it gets hot. I had to remove all of the fatt mat from my van because the heat here in Miami made it start to smell like tar and melt. Was a huge pain to get back out of the van.

Hey Matt, The wheels are stock from my Vanagon and they are 14”. Tires are General Grabber AT2 27X8.5X14. I have stock suspension, but it does seem a bit taller than most Vanagons for some reason. Someone told me its because my van is a GL and they came from the factory a little bit taller. Hope that helps, good luck!

I bought 15" mercedes off craigslist, then saw another guy on KZread with a red and white vanagon, run 17's. T3 Technigue, Chris, sells the hardware (lug nuts are different, ball vs cone) and that was most expensive part of this, so I went back to CL and found 16" from E class Mercedes really cheap. They did lift the vanagon and I like how they look.

Does that stay put ? Or you just use it on the sides and floor, not the roof ? That texas heat would be the stress test, if it works there, it should work most anywhere else.... we have deserts in America, we just don't live in them...
