thankyou very much for this video, it really helps me a lot, I am in the process of writing my SOP and was having a hard time trying to inspire myself these last two days, watching your 7 min video inspires me more than any other videos on youtube, after watching it, I spend 30 min in front of my computer writing nonstop, I am less stress about my SOP and I really feel I can do it. thank you so much for reading a statement. This is really helpful. Some schools have an option to include an optional essay. Would it be possible to talk about low GRE score or low GPA or any other weak areas of the application? Some top schools also ask to include extracurricular activities not on the statement but on the application. Should it be related to ones studies? I am glad I found you on youtube. ☺

Hi Lauren, love your videos! They've been very helpful. I'm wondering what to do in the case that a program only asks for one essay (SOP or personal statement). Would it be best to combine the contents of both, like academic interests/experience + personal history into one? Thank you!

I think the best thing to do is choose one or the other. I think if you skew the lines that separate them, it might just seem like a weak version of one, as opposed to a combination of both. I've reviewed a few people's essays this year for CS programs but I haven't yet heard where they got in, so I'm not sure I'll have any CS examples anytime soon.

Hi Lauren! I'm a chemical engineer with two years of experience but I don't think I have anything to write the way this SOP is written. I don't have any aspirations to solve world hunger, poverty, etc. I'm simply pursuing master's to be more competitive in the job market. What do I do in that case?

You don't necessarily need a big aspiration, but you do need to make yourself stand out. I encourage you to be as specific and niche as possible. For example, it there a particular technology or innovation that you want to dive into deeper and be the leader in? For example, I've seen someone doing a Ph.D in physics who was interested in pursuing a very particular form of math that she wants to apply to her physics research in a way that is very innovative. You can also highlight your work experience. Is there a big project you worked on that had many challenges you had to overcome or where you were able to demonstrate leadership, innovation, improved results, etc.? This is also a great question to bring to office hours where we can talk more specifically about your experience and discuss what a good approach might look like.

Thanks for the video that was sooo helpful! I have a doubt: Do you think its a good idea to talk about my future goals that are not 100% supported by the department research faculty but i know that the concepts i will learn with the faculty at their lab will help me achieve my goals. What i mean to say is: Say the department focuses on experimental research without thinking about where the applications lie- they don’t talk about the industry i wanna get into (future goals) but i know that these concepts will be useful there

If those goals are important to you, then write about them. That can be part of what makes you unique adn stand out. However you want to discuss how the school will help you achieve those goals. You might even be able to cross-list courses from other departments as a way to get access to resources from across campus.

@@beyonddoodles4236 Just make sure to make a case for why that program. If it's not clear for you or them how the program supports your goals, then you shouldn't be applying there.
