Stellaris in 2023 is.... fantastic

Ойындар

In this video, I'm sharing with you my thoughts on Stellaris, a game that was released in 2015 but wasn't finished when it launched. Since then, the game's been updated and revamped multiple times, and it's now one of the best Strategy games out there.
If you're a fan of Strategy games, then you should definitely check out Stellaris. The development team has done a fantastic job of adding new features and improvements over time. If you're looking for a great Strategy game to play in 2023, Stellaris is definitely worth checking out!

The start game exploration and colonization could be enhanced in a "long game" mode. Also the empires objectives could vary and not even cross so a militarist could "win his playthrough" in the same game a materialist "win his" as well. That would actually give both meaning bonus against the end game crisis. A kind of a co-op with the AI. Just oposite fanatic ethics could bring each other problems.

Interesting's points. Yes, it would be great if Stellaris had a way to extend the early game exploration for the entire game or at least a lot of it. One way I look it is like in Star Trek, they don't stop exploring simply as others have been there previously. They still find all sorts of strange new things despite not being first. When you have open borders with another empire you should be able to find new anomalies in their borders and explore them. Empires with closed borders you should have the option to use cloaking and try and find anomalies. To do this though would mean reworking galaxy generation in how it is done, and I suspect it is too hard to do, it might also unbalance the game with the rewards. It would be cool though if they did it.

Playing with huge galaxy and not ramping difficulty allows a longer slower game, with less rush to gain vassals with huge resources. I'm not sure about different win criteria doing much, most people don't actually finish games. As for coop with the AI, I enjoyed trade federations but since Overlord I had my games ruined by so called vassal spam, which forced acquiring similar.

  • @tachyonlance1969

    @tachyonlance1969

Yes, you are spot on. I avoid getting vassals, if you ever watch any of my multiplayer games, rarely will you ever see me get vassals as I think it makes the game too easy. In my current playthrough series for Stellaris I have a massive Federation/Vassals to my south and a smaller group to my north. Lucky I am part of a Trade Federation so can try to fight them. It makes playing as a solo empire hard, but I still do it. Just I often end up with 70-100 planets as I expand to make myself too big to eat.

@@tachyonlance1969 I have been watching some of your plat throughs, but I am not very happy about the direction Paradox have taken the game in. To me the vassal issue was a big problem. Ridiculously Rogue Servitors have more flexibility with vassal contracts than Megacorps despite machines not understanding mercantile trade. Ironically I actually suggested long term contracts for Megacorps a couple of years back after extensive 3.0 beta play testing to allow specialisation benefits for subsidiaries, rather than have competing mini-me without a chance. So I was very disappointed when I discovered what they actually did. Stupid fantasy tropes are IN, while the subtle wielding of economic power has been blunted. It was the emergent behaviour the devs hadn't planned which was most fun, so powerful scripted mechanics putting you on rails has been disappointing.

@@tachyonlance1969 Exactly, like Star Trek. Just an idea but the "ethic points" could be reduced to 2 instead of 3. The 3rd would be granted only if you finish the Politics tradition. And what you could pick would come from the other traditions you finished like militarist if you finished Supremacy or materialist if you finished Discovery.

Could be, sometimes it is hard to put yourself in another's shoes and how they might listen to a video. It is also very difficult to get right as what might sound fine to me with my sound settings might not to others, or I might have my volume down a little and not notice so that the music doesn't seem too bad to me. Alot of things can go wrong when making a video. It takes a lot of time and experience to get it right and make high quality videos, something I never appreciated until I started down this path, and I have a long way to go and a lot to learn.

I completely agree with you here TL. Stellaris still cops a lot of shit; people who claim to play the game, even like the game, are constantly hating on it. 2.2 was an example of that, with how controversial the change from Tile Pop to Job Pops were. 3.8+GP was another example, with people struggling to adjust to the Leader update. 2.0 was even a bit controversial, with some people not liking the demise of the big doomstacks we saw once upon a time - but think the old combat system was horrendous and the introduction of the changes to combat we saw in 2.0+APOC were the start of a very good trend. The effect Custodians initiative cannot be understated. Lastly of course, the DLC model comes under constant flakk for 'milking' the playerbase and being money grubbing. I really don't think this criticism is justified; EVEN to the extent that PDX are a company and companies exist to make money, that DLC model still remains strictly voluntary and opt-in (nobody is forcing anybody to buy Galactic Paragons...), and of course it keeps funding all the free updates as well! Would Stellaris have had support for SEVEN YEARS without the DLCs? I very much doubt it. Would Stellaris have had FOUR free major patches EACH YEAR without the DLC model? I very much doubt that too. How many other games get anywhere near enough support, either in extent or duration? IMHO, with each major patch, Stellaris keeps getting better and better. Stellaris is very, very good. IMHO, just shy of great. With a bit more polish I think it could be great. There clearly ARE some parts which need significant work; the war system, diplomacy and espionage, UI & QoL features, maybe a form of internal politics all being oft-called for (and IMHO, much needed) tweaks. But it's getting there. And it's a great journey to be on.

Great comment. The game is in a pretty good state, yes there are a number of areas to fix but you only need to look to the latest 3.9 update, the massive changes to habitats to improve the game, a huge list of improvements, bugs fixes, and they have already talked of more interesting features they want to introduce as part of 4.0 and beyond. We can expect a substantial update and probably another DLC as part of 4.0. Thanks for the comment.

There was a free trial recently and I gave it a shot because my son really loves it. I found that it did a very poor job of explaining the gameplay. This concerns me and is the main reason for not picking it up because it seems to be a massive game with dozens of add-ons. And if I manage to get into it, those add-ons are a concern as well, because I know that if I like it, I will want to buy everything. Still, I am looking at a starter bundle on Steam which is on sale. Aside from the base game it includes Utopia, Federations, Distant Stars, and the Synthetic Dawn story pack. These are supposedly some of the more popular additions. I'm still debating.

That is certainly a good bundle to start with. Stellaris is a massive game now and will take you some time to master. My advice is just playing games from start to finish, don't keep restarting for the perfect start as you have so much more to learn in the mid and end game. The good thing about Stellaris is it is a complete game, with all the DLCs and content you have thousands of hours of replay. I have played so much over the past 7-8 years I'm having a little break, something like 5-6,000 hours.

There is no shame in playing on easier modes, or use the difficulity scaling for your first games ;) There's a lot of systems but you'll grasp it eventually. This will always be one of my favorite games of all time. You can even set up which other empires you want in the game, because sometimes the random generation just screws you by putting you into a galaxy with almost only natural enemies.

I actually gave up on XCOM 2 for the same reason. But I revisited it months later looking up strategy guides and finally managed to beat the game. (I was also committed to playing on iron man mode). Stellaris is also hard for the same reasons - but proper strategy guides can give you a great chance to survive and thrive. A lot of the difficulty from Stellaris is just due to its scale and complexity. Once you have a grasp of all the systems at play it becomes a lot more manageable and will change your play style. Cheers

Some seem interesting ofc, just hard to know what and how much really you get from each dlc. I just started with the base game, only had 1 contact with an ai species for now. That would take a very long time to go through and find out everything, you would need to read a lot of Dev Diaries for that. But I have seen for the expansion coming on the 7th of May they are introducing Seasons, this will be Season 8 and for the one fee you get all the DLC's for this year, which I think saves 20% on buying them separately. PDX know there are a lot of DLCs now for this game and I think will implement other seasons for the all the other years the game has been out, probably from seasons 1-8, might just take some time. The Custodian project with the free updates adds a lot to the game, but if you want more and the best content you do have to pay one way or the other. Seasons and some other options PDX are bringing out will hopefully address having to get so many DLCs, or just wait till they have discount offers which happens multiple times a year.

So many to pick from, wait till they are on special and pick some up then. Also, PDX are bringing out seasons, for this year you can buy Season 08 and it gives you access to the next expansion out May 7th and two more DLC's this year, saves 20%. They will likely make more seasons and bundles as Stellaris has been around a long time now with a lot of content to buy, gets expensive so they are trying to make it cheaper for newer players.

The learning curve is high, but any game that has been out for 8+ years with expansions nearly every year is going to take time to learn and get into. My advice would be to play on smaller galaxies with few AI on lower difficulty settings until you understand the basics of the game. Also, plenty of KZread creators with advanced guides on how to build powerful empires with a few key basic strategies, I have some in depth guides and Montu has plenty as well.
