Steering control module for MK5 Golf GTI

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I've gotten a request to do a short clip of the steering wheel module from my MK5 Golf GTI using Ross-Tech's VCDS. This is to assist individuals using OBDeleven to make the necessary short coding options. There is no long coding option for this module

Yes. This is independent of the engine type. TFSI vs FSI doesn't not matter. I'll post a response to your question with a RossTech link to what modules you can swap and upgrade to. I finally did a MK6 GTI steering wheel upgrade and Golf R instrument cluster swap since this video, which I'm yet to upload.

If i replace my steering wheel module, with a new one. Will i need code the new steering wheel module and then code the cruise control? or is the replacement for module plug and play then code cruise control. i am afriad after changing it ill get problems since i put a new module!

You will need to code the module (#16) with the same coding your old one had. Physically, it is plug and play, but since the new unit is a virgin, or not on that car before, it would need to be coded to include the cruise control functionality. If you have the cruise control stalk installed, but not coded, then your rear wiper will not work, and you get a fault code for it. The rear wiper washer fluid motor will also not work as well.

Hi there .. a great video and like the mk6 MFSW on the mkV also.. I'm doing a mk6 GTI with paddles on my MKV jetta which has the AQ CONTROL module like yours has.. Will that control module run the mk6 MFSW with flappy paddles gears or do I need the CD control module.?? Is the mk6 cluster and easy swap too as I would like to use the extra functions on the display with the mk6 MFSW?? . Keep up the videos they are very good...

Read this: wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Steering_Wheel_Control_Module_Versions Your "AQ" control module is for MK5 only. You need to get a module or one that supports BOTH the 1.3 and 2.0 protocols. Your AQ module is a Highline module, but it only does the older MK5 DDP protocol. It doesn't support the newer 2.0 BAP protocol. This is why you need a module that does BOTH protocols. When you use your MFSW to change something on your radio, you are actually using the MFSW to instruct the instrument cluster to in turn instruct the radio to make the change (hence the need to support both protocols). Since you have an "AQ", you wouldn't buy a CD module as I did. I changed my steering rack to another one years ago. You should buy a "CH" or "CK" to maintain your steering angle sensor being inside your steering column itself (instead of the steering rack). The MK6 Cluster is a technical one. You need to know the secret PIN of the MK6 cluster you are buying and the one in your car currently (add a leading "0" if you have a 4-digit PIN). If you don't know either PIN, then you would have to do what you see me doing in my video of getting a copy of a tool like AVDI and placing BOTH clusters in "Service Mode" to extract these PINs. In either case, you NEED to make a new key for your car (or at least write to a new Megamos ID-48 transponder pill as the transponder in the key belongs to the instrument cluster itself and can't be reused in any other vehicle). To key the donor cluster into service mode, you have to "delete" the IMMO data from a specific address in the instrument cluster (which you will have to take apart to read the EEPROM inside with a programmer). You would then install it in your car (using a 32-pin wire harness you buy online), place the cluster in Service Mode, then overwrite your original VIN, MAC, CS, and Power Class (that you would have also made a note of from your old cluster). You would then at this point, pair a new key (transponder pill) to your cluster. SAVE, exit Service Mode, so you can start the car without issue. This took me two days to do on my car as I was not mentally for several key steps that I missed out on in the process. If you kept the MK5 steering wheel with the MK6 Cluster, then you can't access all menus of the MK6 cluster as you have only "8" MK5 buttons as opposed to the full "12" in the stock MK6 MFSW.

@@MatthewTaylor3 thank you for the technical info. Seems like alot of work to make the mk6 speedo cluster work . I think I will be happy with just the MK6 MFSW from the MK6 GTI. Ok the CD is if there is NO angle sensor on outside steering rack. CH AND CK are showing WITH angle sensor but CK has a #2 in the notes... Not sure on difference between CH &CK?? looking at my control module underneath there seems to be 2 connections at the FRONT of the control module one furthest forward surrounded by white connector housing and one on the left both seem attached to the clock spring. Am I right in saying the one on the left is the angle sensor so I would need either a CH OR CK module for the mk6 GTI MFSW?? Wish I could ad a picture on here. 😒

@@gavinfisher8049 You are correct about the "manual transmission only" portion that I forgot to mention. You are now limited to only one option now (to keep the paddles working for shifting). I had replaced my steering rack (that died with one that happened to also have a steering angle sensor in the rack itself, so the CD variant worked fine for me (after turning off the steering angle sensor in the CD module itself). I recall seeing other forums where folks use the CH and CK units without issue on DSG (despite note #2). Any Yellow plugs you come across is strictly airbag-related. You would be correct about the connections at the FRONT of the module. For this reason, you are looking at the CH or CK module to have all the pins you would possibly need for full functionality. I assume you already have the Revision "C" clockspring since you have the AQ module. When I compared to the stock AQ module with the CD one, I realized that the difference to the naked eye is just a few pins are missing as with a few items on the board

@@gavinfisher8049 @Gavin Fisher I should have resonded to you from Friday. For security reasons VCDS does NOT reveal your actual PIN to you. VCDS does however allow you to pair known PINs that you have found otherwise. You need the ignition key for your existing car to easily place your stock cluster in Service Mode using a tool like AVDI (or a cloned copy of the application). For the donor cluster, having the key would make the process easier for you, but if not, you would have to take the cluster apart, read the EEPROM (and save it on your PC for safekeeping), then delete the immobilizer data, reassemble, then electronically place the cluster in Service Moe using AVDI. Having both PINs beforehand would allow you to pair and reuse your existing key with the new cluster, otherwise, you need to order a blank transponder pill. The cluster part number you provided is a good Highline one for a petrol engine and metric units. Of course, you will use the bezel of the 2010 Jetta faceplace including plastic lens, but use all of the MK6 electronic interior including needles and guages. Note, you WILL lose the "chrome" rings around the two circular gauges if you go this route. You can get other numdered circular faceplates that have the chrome bezel around it for an OEM look. The best appearance in MY opinion is to go for the Scirroco R instrument cluster. That would be a perfect fit for the MK5 GTI maintaining the 2 transparent plastic rings and also retaining the modern MK6 look and eye candy features. I'm going to do this swap next, BUT finding a Scirroco R cluster is more difficult and expensive than finding gold (even on eBay).

Hey dude, i have a left hand drive golf mk5 from 2008, one of the last generation of it and i have by manufacture multifunction steeringwheel but the previous owner changed to steering wheel control module from 1k0 953 549 BK(which is the original one) to BC, now the problem is that BC does not support multifunction steering wheel and someone said that instead of buying an BK because its expensive i can buy an AQ and use it with that but wouldnt that affect some of the working commands? I have the manufacture one BK and it has an higher version than the AQ, Quick Mention, my mk5 is litterally full option, so i need to buy BK if thats what the car comes with right? I shouldnt downgrade to SW 0070

When it comes to VCDS, I consider myself the expert with this tool since I use it daily on my car. PM me your e-mail address or contact number so we can link up and get it working. I suspect you made the mistake of buying module as they aren't all the same. They are different between the various ABS modules, and 2WD vs 4WD units. @@DJ_KAYZ_SA I'm sorry to hear this. I had this issue too, but it only occured when the engine was not running. I don't just mean a lack of steering assist. I mean that my steering rack was completely locked up as though the steering lock was on (but it actually wasn't). Even if my car was coasting forward with the ignition ON, the steering couldn't turn. I don't have an answer for your situation other than resolving the issue properly with a replacement steering rack.

The description section of the video is for folks who use OBDeleven, understand what is meant when they see specific instructions for Ross-Tech's VCDS and how they would translate the same steps for OBDeleven. If you have neither tool, then this video would be of no use to you. I could modernize the video, but the folks on the OBDeleven forum already got a general idea.
