Steelhead Fishing With Minnows (Ohio Steelhead)

Ойын-сауық

Today me and Blake head out to our main steelhead location and did extremely well. Caught some quality fish and a few of them possibly new PBs. Overall a really fun day of fishing for the both of us. Blake caught his on spoons while I caught mine on minnows.

Dunno where this even is. The crowds have always been bad but since covid it just sucks. I have access to a private branch, its the only place ive done well consistently this year. Back when I was a kid you used to see guys using minnows quite a bit. I remember doing decent with them a few times but not really enough to wanna mess with hauling them around. I will say this years been pretty good with good size fish. I dont ever keep those things. I always say im going to keep a good hen for eggs and to cold smoke but its just not natural

In this video we are fishing an Erie trib near Cleveland and the crowds weren’t terrible but still pretty busy. It’s been tough to find spots that haven’t been hammered 24/7. This was our second time using minnows and it worked really well surprisingly catching quality fish. We normally keep a few fish to eat and stock up for the year cause we have limited time at the river.

New subscriber here, great videos. The one steely was a beauty you thought may be your pb. Are you the only guys catching fish there? Wondering about the spoons you use. I have cleos, kastmasters and kowobblers I use. Wondering what brand of spoons you use. Happy belated bday. Fish on.

Thanks brotha, I appreciate the subscribe. Normally there are people catching fish there but it also depends on the day. Some days we catch up to 8 and I only see a few caught. We use little Cleo’s anywhere from 1/4 oz to 2/5 and just mix up the colors depending on what they are hitting. I’m thinking it was my PB but too late now to tell. Tight lines 🤙

Yes, this was the day before the big rain. This day the water was fairly clear but if you go up river it may more clear.

@@Fishers21 Rocky isn’t a bad river just hard to beat the crowd to the good spots. I usually go far up river and find spots that are less likely to be fished a lot.

Are these steelhead or rainbow? My understanding is that steelhead are saltwater run rainbows hatched in freshwater. I wouldn't think a trout would be able to hit seawater from ohio? They look like nice rainbows to me though :p

Rainbow trout and steelhead are the same species, but they have different lifestyles. Steelhead are anadromous-meaning they spend part of their lives in the sea before going to rivers to breed-while rainbow trout spend their lives mostly or entirely in freshwater. (Pasted from National wildlife foundation) Steelhead were planted in the Great Lakes years ago. Their is a mix if hatchery and natural fish in the tributaries of the Great Lakes. Steelhead come in from the lake to spawn and return to the lake, unlike salmon which run the river one time in their life cycle and die after spawning.
